I celebrate Woman’s History month with my own month-long activity of choking the chicken.
The most amazing thing happened to me today at a Veterans appointment for my lower back issues, which are my “terminal” condition, i.e., the condition that rendered me unfit to be a mission aircrew member, giving me a medical separation under honorable conditions yada yada.
My new orthopedic doctor is a former Veteran from Desert Storm era whose own terminal condition was that she took a bullet in her foot, which required eleven surgeries. She is still a doctor for Veterans. I was pretty impressed and liked her immensely.
She and I were able to connect because she knew exactly what I meant when I said I lifted the 65 pound bottle and hurt my back because I was a young, strong woman and the guys I worked with lifted that bottle all the time. I wasn’t going to be accused of being a girl! She and I laughed together at that and I think I’m going to take this old doctor’s advice and get some more physical therapy on both my back and my brain.
So, hurrah for Women’s History month for those of us who actually know a couple who contributed something worthwhile to humanity. I know the two ladies shown above sacrificed their penises (or is it peni?) but I really do know some fine women who did not intend to become stastistics to support a social experiment and history should record their contribution.
She said she got shot in the field. I wanted to ask if it was enemy or friendly fire, but did not. What the hell was an orthopedic nurse practictioner (at the time) doing in the field?
Oh, well… those Desert Storm days and nights.
I used to get so pissed at some of the women who worked for me. They would let that idea that they HAD to be as physically strong as ‘the guys’ lead them into stuff that put themselves,(as you did, Mags) into harm that occasionally became potentially lethal, and brought that same potential for harm to team members. Some were as strong, (an aviation Grunt nicknamed Sarge comes to mind) but most weren’t. It’s just reality. Cold, merciless reality. Of course, there was always 1 or 2 that played it the other way. They didn’t last long, either.
On the other hand, I absolutely hammered any of the men who talked shit (the serious kind) about their fellow shipmates not being able to their jobs. They didn’t like it when I – stronger than most of them – called them out for not being able to do what I could. We worked together, or I shit-canned them.
Hah!

Random thoughts:
Grew up on a farm, and in that area women were driving tractors, trucks, combines, etc.
The idea that women can’t drive pickups was a strange notion I ran into only after moving to a city.
If you are working, you don’t have time to be looking down on those around you – unless they are shamelessly sponging off your efforts.
We, all of us, are variously enabled at various times.
I once worked in a warehouse where I would regularly lift and carry around 200 pounds. If I even THOUGHT about doing that now, I’d throw my back out 🙂
I should not have lifted the big SF6 bottle alone. I had a case of hubris.
Lol. Now I pay with back ache.
I know a technique that helps with back ache. Lay down on the floor near a wall, facing it. Place your legs up against the wall just to the point where your back starts hurting a little. Then stay like that for ten minutes.
Do that every day, twice a day if you have the time, raising your feet higher as your back becomes more flexible.
Since there isn’t any strong movement your back ache could disappear. I’m not a doctor, just someone who had similar pain.
Be VERY, VERY careful doing as you advise! If you get too close to the wall and allow your legs to climb up the wall too far, they could accidentally hang over and you’ll have something in your face you really weren’t expecting. You will realize then and there you will never need a woman again!
Funny!! Technically you not suppose to have your body more than 90 degrees angle, because then you would hurt your neck and that would defeat the purpose.

Increasingly, POC are the demographic which is poor enough, and poorly-educated enough, to actually watch network TeeVee.
Frankly, I have zero idea whether the “premium” TeeVee channels also push Black History Month, since I don’t watch their shit either.
