Hindenburger is just funny. I don’t even see why Germans wouldn’t laugh. You can’t fly around with giant sacks of hydrogen above your head and think that nothing will ever go wrong.
I read a book about Zeppelins and was surprised to learn they could survive multiple incendiary bombs dropped on them in WW1 by planes over London. I wouldn’t have taken that bet. The Germans used hydrogen because it is readily produced and it was yet unknown that helium is a constituent in natural gas extraction. The US effort at semi-rigid airships had to deflate one to fill the other, but being inflammable, helium was much safer. (Though it provided ~7% less lift.) The Hindenburg incident, which some passengers surprisingly walked away from, is one of those that always raises suspicion of espionage.
To this day the Federal Helium Reserve, is a strategic reserve of the United States holding over 1 billion cubic meters (109 m3) of helium gas. The helium is stored at the Cliffside Storage Facility about 12 miles northwest of Amarillo, TX.
Go figure?
The other reason the Hindenburg used hydrogen is that the US refused to sell them helium.
