The jury has reached a verdict in the trial of former Minneapolis officer Derek Chauvin in the May 2020 death of George Floyd.
It took the jury roughly 10 hours of deliberation to reach their verdict, which is expected to be read in Hennepin County court between 3:30 and 4 p.m local time (between 4:30 and 5pm ET).
Chauvin faces three charges (via CBSN Minnesota)
- Second-degree unintentional murder means causing death without intent by committing a felony.
- Second-degree manslaughter is causing death by unreasonable risk.
- Third-degree murder means causing death by an “eminently dangerous” act, showing a “depraved mind.”
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison will deliver a statement 20 minutes after the verdict is delivered and court concludes in the Derek Chauvin trial. He will be joined by Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman and other members of the prosecution team.
According to CBS, WCCO’s Esme Murphy reports that Hennepin County court employees were notified to stop working at all downtown courthouse locations and to “exit downtown immediately.”
In other words, it appears the “looting assured” no matter which way the verdict goes.

There should have been a change of venue, especially after the twenty million award to the Floyd clan. The jury should have been sequestered, the third degree murder should have been dropped and a mistrial should have been called after the Maxine sow began calling for riots if he wasn’t found guilty.

I suspect it will be tossed out:
1) the govt paying $27 million to the family days before the trial. That has mistrial written all over it.
2) Maxine Waters urging riots if not guilty. The judge has already laid the grounds for that one. His “I told the jurors not to watch any news” is laughable. They should have been totally sequestered.
All it will take is one juror to say “I was afraid” etc. and it will be tossed.
He will never escape prosecution until he is convicted, no matter how many times it takes.

In a just world there would be a retrial, there should have been a mistrial. In today’s world Chauvin will be lucky to get out of prison alive after a fifty year sentence. You do realize that guilty on all charges means the prosecution said he meant to involuntarily kill Floyd. You can’t have that both ways and yet…that’s what the charges and verdict state. Chauvin MEANT to kill Floyd, involuntarily by accident on purpose.

Sat on a murder trial once where I was the alternate (do anything you possibly can to NEVER be an alternate). So I sit through all the evidence and conclude pretty solidly, that the state did a piss poor job of presenting their case and that they had NOT established any solid, reliable evidence that put the defendant at the scene of the murder (this was another jungle shooting in a very black area of suburban Atlanta). Supposedly the victim had fired a gun at the defendant’s car and yet neither the car, nor a gun, nor matching bullets, nor eyewitnesses (it was very dark out apparently) were produced, and the two had a long, amicable relationship prior (one selling the other cannabis – and the state more than emphasized the drug-dealer aspect). Did I think that possibly this guy did it? I think there was a possibility, but when the state does a completely half-assed job of producing evidence (a likely affirmative action black female ADA), you start with the foundation that the defendant is not-guilty until proven otherwise. The community, the victim’s family, the jury, everyone, was let down by the job that was done in presenting the case. The defense attorney did a great job in pointing out all of these very clear holes in the case.
So as the alternate, I had to sit in the jury pool room awaiting the verdict. Thankfully it came the same day so I didn’t have to go back the next day. They found him guilty. I was shocked when I found out. A few weeks later I ran into one of the jurors at the Home Depot. I asked him how they could find him guilty when there was no evidence connecting him to the crime scene, and he said “well, someone did it.”
THAT is the level of stupidity that infests our jury system.
And when we throw innocent people in jail, the real perpetrators remain on the street and the case is closed.
I had a similar experience circa 1980. I was on the jury. A police officer was on trial for stealing contraband from the evidence room. State police conducted a sting. Yes he was enticed…and he removed the hinges to gain access to said contraband. Of course, the defense was entrapment. The verdict was 11 to 1 for acquittal. Guess who was the one? The gist of the so-called deliberations was that they tricked the po po or that he isn’t the only one…he just got caught. Upon being dismissed from service, as I walked into the court house lobby, someone pointed at me and said ‘he’s the one.’ For a couple of days after that, I was receiving hang up calls. I was all of 21 at the time. My father was the deputy director of a state penal facility located where we lived. People really are stupid for the most part.
Question is how will this play out in changes to police behavior on the street.
