Probably because they evacuated the building before demolition for the insurance payout.

There must be ATF or DEA employees living there and they were given advance notice.

Given the massive number of sinkholes in Florida, that possibility still needs to be investigated. Footage of buildings falling into them when they finally break through, is quite similar. That being said, this certainly looked like a controlled demolition.

Stucky

“this certainly looked like a controlled demolition.”

Indeed ….. it collapsed into it’s own footprint!!

Squibs! I see squibs everywhere! Just wait until they find the fucken thermite. That will seal the deal.

Watch the video, see those white flashes of light inside the building? Wonder what that is?

The placement of the explosive charges and the sequence of detonation are critical to a successful and safe demolition.

Implosion is by far the most dramatic way to demolish a building. It involves using explosives to knock out a building’s primary vertical supports, causing the building to collapse onto itself from the inside out. The placement of the explosive charges and the sequence of detonation are critical to a successful and safe demolition. Implosion is often used to demolish large structures in urban areas.

For a successful demolition, blaster crews analyze a complete set of structural blueprints to identify the main components of the building and determine whether other areas need to be blasted in addition to those identified on the blueprints. They then determine the type of explosives to use, where to position them in the building, and how to time their detonation.

“see those white flashes of light inside the building? Wonder what that is? “

Power cables disconnecting?

Is it now standard practice to assume every building that crashes is the result of controlled demolition??

You are free to go that route, of course! But, I hope you don’t.

Nah, the building got Covid. Residents not getting shots, or not masking up.

Either that or it was Global Warming.

Really, those are the only two things it could possibly be caused by. Come to think of it, those are the only two things anything can possibly be caused by.

overthecliff
overthecliff

So much for the local building inspectors. Great job guys.

Mygirl....maybe

um, seems like the area was largely jewish…

Crowds of law enforcement officers gathered around the mound of rubble that was left of the building, and a rescue team of Orthodox Jews, called Hatzalah, were on the scene in the area, which has a large Jewish population. Members of a local synagogue arrived on site with bottled water, cookies, fruit and chips for staff and survivors. The city has also long been an enclave of the Argentine-American community.

If it ware a sinkhole then more of the building would have gone down, also, where is the hole? Time will tell, this is a dreadful event and I pray for the folk impacted.

Overthecliff, you’re probably right on this one. That building was built in 1981. That was the worst time for construction integrity in South Florida particularly in Dade County. That was when Country Walk was built, which is the whole neighborhood blown down in 1992 by Hurricane Andrew. Come to find out there wasn’t any steel in the concrete, it was cheaper to pay off the building inspectors. Stuff on the beach has a tough time anyway, the salt seems to erode everything, for instance a hose bib might last 4 or 5 years, then it just crumbles. Typical sinkholes don’t really happen in South Florida, they are more of a central Florida thing, Miami Beach was dredge and fill mangrove swamp, so it’s a different situation. Looks like the ground shifted underneath the building, and it was poorly constructed and just collapsed. I looked into buying a condo in Surfside for an office twenty years ago, they were dirt cheap, and the town was charming at that point. But all of those old buildings looked like they were going to be in need of some major renovations and I didn’t want to be on the hook for that.

rhs jr

Never seen a farmhouse do that; even a trailer home beats that nightmare. Yes, Florida has a lot a sinkholes but I don’t remember ever seeing one so close to the shore. I bet that was crooked Yankee construction and some body slammed a door real hard. Condo values everywhere will take a hit; they will all have to have their concrete drilled and checked, and their construction design re-certified. Just when 50 million Westerners need a new place to live, to boot. Y’all remember North Africa went from lush to desert 30 times, right? And about 5,000 ya people had to move south to the Congo, north to Europe, and east to Egypt. And the SW of North America dried up about 500AD and the Anastazi (the Ancient Ones) had to move to Mexico. Well, I suspect we might see the US West dry up again over the next 30 years and 50 Million Neostazi will have to move to Dixie. We’ll have to wait and see if it rains then or if it takes 100 or 1,000 or 90,000 years to fill Lake Meade again with water. If you live there, don’t wait until the highways are covered with sand dunes.

I looks fake to me. Why no gasps or yelling by the people you can hear in the background? Maybe the voices are a TV and the video is being recorded by a security camera? Ok, then why is there no sound of the building crashing down? It would seem close enough the hear quite a roar, no? Maybe the ground would shake just a bit also, no? Seems off to me.

I can imagine that everyone associated with that building except that saps who “bought” units is going to have a lot of egg on their face.
First, they’ll find out that the building was of a marginal design, designed to save material as long as the material was of good quality.
Second, they’ll find that the concrete was mainly sand, and that a lot of rebar was left out of it.
Third, that building had supposedly had major leakage problems. Compound that with poor concrete, I bet the water had penetrated the pourings and what rebar and metal supports were there were very badly corroded. I can imagine that the whole heap was about to collapse, and had the engineers had time to do their inspections, they would have found all of the problems. However, they never had the chance because of:
Fourth, the people working on the roof had placed lots of heavy roofing material and equipment on the roof, which finally pushed it all over the edge.
It will be amusing how all parties involved will start pointing fingers. I bet there will be lots of witnesses who will say they saw all kinds of problems years ago but the ones who could do something about it did nothing.

from the cnn website–

Professor who studied collapsed building says it showed signs of sinking in the 1990s
From CNN’s Curt Devine

Shimon Wdowinski, a professor with Florida International University’s Institute of Environment, told CNN he determined in a study last year that the Champlain Towers South condo showed signs of sinking in the 1990s.

The condo had a subsidence rate of about two millimeters a year from 1993 to 1999, according to his study.

While Wdowinski said that this sinking alone would likely not cause the condo’s collapse, he said it could be a contributing factor.

“If one part of the building moves with respect to the other, that could cause some tension and cracks,” he explained.

He added that that sinking was unique to the area of Champlain Towers South, not surrounding buildings. He said subsidence over larger areas was detected in western Miami Beach, which was constructed on reclaimed wetland.

“We noticed that the building was moving, and we reported that in the study, but we’ve seen buildings in other areas
moving at even higher rates, so we didn’t think it was something unusual. What’s unusual is that today it collapsed,” he said.
Wdowinski’s study was first reported by USA Today.

It looks like the cement did not stick to the rebar in chunks, but disintegrated totally like it was sandy. That’s a sure sign the cement company or builder was cheating on the mix and made the structure weak. That should have been caught by the state inspectors as it was going up. It is common knowledge that the Mob is into the cement business in NY and Miami are prime Mob cities. Also, the building looks like it is prefab partitions bolted together rather than one whole building poured solid concrete (floors-walls etc) which is a billion times stronger.

starfcker

Read Coalclinker above, Bea. I’ve lived in tropical beach towns my whole life. Salt is a bitch especially when combined with water and heat. I’ve probably seen hundreds of structures where chunks of concrete has just flaked off due to the rebar inside rotting. Dredge and fill has to be all sand to have building stability. If there was anything organic under that building, at some point it rots away and you got a big hole. Throw in a rickety building on top of it, and you see what you get

BL
BL

Star- I have seen buildings deteriorate because of salt air. Yes, the concrete starts to crumble, then housing authorities determine if it should be condemned, etc. NEVER seen two sections of building just fall down, nor have you. I could buy a balcony crumbling and falling of, something of that nature. This is not salt air.

I grew up around my FL relatives and spent time in FL and I know what salt does to concrete there. Still not buying your theory, with all due respect.

RiNS

Here in Nova Scotia most structures being built were exposed to weather use either galvanized rebar or fiberglass rebar because of the rot you wrote about above. Throw in a few shady inspections and it is not hard to see something like this occurring.

It is amazing how fast it came down. Looked just like building 7.

rhs jr
rhs jr

Oh yeah, use the wrong sand in a cement mix and in ten years it crumbles into dust. That should have been caught by inspectors if it was the case. Salty air corrodes metal on beach houses real bad real quick.

It’s in Kentucky. I’ve been to all of those wide spots in the road. Sandy Hook, county seat of Elliot County, used to have knock-down drag-out fights when they had town hall meetings. Elliot county voted for every Democrat Presidential candidate between 1872 to 2012, and voted Republican for their first time ever in 2016. It’s impossible to buy any alcohol anywhere in that county, but lots of then still get drunk on Carter County’s finest.
