Stopped at the supermarket today. One week ago masks wearing was maybe 5%, today it’s back to at least a third if not more. I’m guessing it’s a reaction to the new CDC/media push they launched yesterday.
I said it before, and I’ll say it again, masks are now a permanent part of the landscape and they are never going away.
Now I have to decide if I want to suck it up this winter and wear a mask part time or just say fuck it and leave the last of it behind. It is difficult to leave long term goals unfinished, even when they aren’t very relevant anymore.
I guess when the evil rule, we are left with only bad and worse choices in some areas.
I simply was not able to do something that I know is wrong and still be able to look in the mirror. So there was not really a decision to make.

I like that answer. It is what I had been doing. I must be feeling weak by being treated like Charlie Brown with the finish line in sight. It is hard to let go after so long.
Just going to put it out there as a thought experiment, raging sick with the flu but need to get groceries, hacking and wheezing in the produce section but wearing a mask and not directly spraying the fresh produce with spittle. Gratz, may have saved someone from catching a virus from that vector, but what about hands, did i squeeze and replace that veggie or fruit, were the hands sterilized ? what about the shopping cart handles the steering wheel or shifter or door handles in the ride to said store.
What about the person before you, before that, the person/s stocking items, the person/s at the distribution center, the person/s harvesting in the field. What about deliberate spreading of a virus. There are just too many vectors for masks to be a serious factor.
Masks may offer a tiny amount of prevention of transmission under certain circumstances. Great we have just delayed herd immunity by that much. It would be better to bite the bullet and take the chance that natural immunity will do it’s job, not that i want to see sick people hacking on the produce, which i have, i know it sucks for the individual and the next person down the line, but that has been humanities experience with virus’s, accept it and roll the die has been my thought on the matter. Life will go on with our without you. You will have immunity or you won’t.
Another thing at play here is herd immunity, native Americans had little immunity to small pox,the plague wiped out half of Europe, a brighter side to this is the human race may walk away with some measure of immunity to another respiratory virus, just making us harder to kill off as a species.
Even wearing a military grade NBC mask the rest of our days will fall short, there is just no way around it. And probably be thankful this isn’t the real deal like Pneumonic plague.
With respect, if i am raging sick and have to go to the store i will probably wear a mask to avoid spraying the produce. Only because i am considering others, not because i am some sort of hero.
But if i am not sick i would rather take the chances of being exposed and letting my immune system deal with it.
These masks do not do anything. You know don’t cough or sneeze on people or your hands? That is literally the best and only control measure for every day life. The rest of it is individual health maintenance.
It is really difficult to accept that they don’t do anything at all, but they don’t. They make you sick and dehumanize you.
If a disease is so dangerous that we can’t go about the daily tasks of living unimpeded, then that is a problem. No such disease is currently plaguing mankind.
In the end it comes down to a pretty simple calculus; would you prefer to live in a state of perpetual fear, submitting to any and every decree and mandate no matter how nonsensical or draconian or face life head on as the species has done since it first became sentient?
I have my own conscience to obey and I trust it far more than any judge to let me know the difference between what is right and what is wrong.
Anyone who believes that this is a matter of public health is simply not paying attention.
And it’s not as though there is NOTHING you can do to stay healthy or get well if you happen to actually get it. The divine that is manifested in human form on this planet has everything it needs to survive, especially if one works in harmony with all the natural things we share the planet with to keep oneself healthy.
I will admit it is mostly on the receiving end, if you are exposed to a virus it’s on your own immune system. The trick is not being exposed, a near Impossibility, i merely suggest there is a difference between coughing a full viral load directly on something or someone as to coughing into a mask.
As another thought experiment how do we treat a little old lady obviously ill, hacking and wheezing over the fresh produce you are about to take a look at to purchase? do we skip fresh veggies for that week .
If she’s maskless, I’d be nice to her. If she has a mask, I’d say “get out of my way, you crazy old crone!”
