California Bans Small Off-Road Gas Engines, Including Lawnmowers And Chainsaws

California moved one step closer to ending reliance on fossil fuels as Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a new bill into law on Sunday to ban all off-road gas-powered engines.

The new law requires the state to apply the new rule by Jan. 1, 2024, or as soon as regulators determine is “feasible,” whichever date is later, according to the bill.

The bill served as one step in the governor’s California Comeback Plan that includes a strong focus on climate change initiatives.

“In a time when the state and country are more divided than ever, this legislative session reminds us what we can accomplish together. I am thankful for our partners in the state Legislature who furthered our efforts to tackle the state’s most persistent challenges – together, we took action to address those challenges head-on, implementing historic legislation and the California Comeback Plan to hit fast forward on our state’s recovery,” Newsom said in a press release on Saturday.

“What we’re doing here in California is unprecedented in both nature and scale. We will come back from this pandemic stronger than ever before,” he added.

A ‘Massive Change’ Measure

Not all Californians approve of the new legislation. Andrew Bray, vice president of government relations for the National Association of Landscape Professionals, argued the zero-emission commercial-grade equipment landscapers will be far too expensive.

These companies are going to have to completely retrofit their entire workshops to be able to handle this massive change in voltage so they’re going to be charged every day,” Bray said, according to a Los Angeles Times report Saturday.

The change could strongly impact small businesses in landscaping and related industries. In addition to increased costs, the change could result in other unexpected problems, such as the need to carry charged batteries.

“Bray said a three-person landscaping crew will need to carry 30 to 40 fully charged batteries to power its equipment during a full day’s work,” according to the report.

A Small Business Disaster

The new law is expected to affect nearly 50,000 small businesses, according to The Washington Examiner. It noted that California’s budget includes $30 million for professional landscapers and gardeners to quit using gas-powered equipment, but that it would not be enough to cover the full costs.

The change is also not the only recent climate change announcement regarding gas-powered engines by Newsom. Last month, the governor signed an executive order to ban gas-powered and diesel cars by 2035.

This is the most impactful step our state can take to fight climate change,” Newsom said in the press release announcing the order. “For too many decades, we have allowed cars to pollute the air that our children and families breathe.

About 2 years ago plumbing valves got scarce due to Komiifornia laws. It seems the red paint on the handles was LEAD. Gotta stop the young ones from chewing on the plumbing handles. Same with 2 stroke motors in small dirt bikes. Lead based paint and I guess kids out west do not ride dirt bikes they chew on them……….

Soon those idiots out there will discover that sewer lines in buildings are open to the atmosphere, AND VENT ALL KINDS OF METHANE FROM THE SEWER MAINS. They will demand that every roof line soil pipe vent be fitted with a valve that stops that. Can you imagine the shitfest that will come out of that?

In my NJ neck of the woods it’s NYC focktards buying all the residential property, even the foreclosures. They’re too stupid to realize they’re jumping from the fire into the hot oil, but if you have enough money to buy a $400-500k house while affording the property taxes, please do so.
I plan on selling my house. Someone else can pay the taxes and put up with the BS.

California, leading the way as always. NY will be next. Politicians are some of the most ignorant people. A zero turn lawn mower frequently used by landscapers will now be chucked full of batteries which will not be able to be swapped like a sting trimmer or push mower. They will be like a Tesla, requiring frequent recharges. A typical landscaper will use one of these machines 8-10 hours a day, but with a battery powered one they will be lucky to get 2hrs usage. I wanna blast my head against the desk.

Good news is, I have been slowly starting a small engine repair shop and something tells me I will be staying quite busy with people bringing me their gas powered gadgets to maintain. I already have people bringing me pre-CARB stuff because they like the simplicity of the design.

Early on in our first herd of goats, we tried tethering our goats to clear out an unfenced area of multiflora rose, had the chains just long enough that the goats couldn’t get tangled. 6 four hoof drive lawn mowers! Holy Shit! They screamed and carried on like we were butchering them live! As the vet explained they take comfort in the closeness of the herd.

It seemed like a good idea at the time, the true source of all problems.

They are banning the sale of new products. This should be a huge opportunity for stores near the borders of Nevada, Arizona, and Oregon. This is not a ban on use, but on sale and manufacture. Not good in any way, but not a true ban on what’s already owned.

They won’t need the lawn equipment since the commies running the state have drained the reservoirs into the ocean and there won’t be any water for landscaping. 2022 will be a very dry year again and will lead to more control.

On the list of banned gas powered machines: portable generators. Think about that for a moment. The power goes out because PG&E won’t maintain power lines because they’re forced to spend the money for “renewables” instead and they turn off the power because the wind blows.
You want to keep your refrigerated food from spoiling but you can’t use a gas powered generator. Pure genius.
I for one will keep all my gas powered equipment running as long as necessary. If I have to replace something after the ban I’ll go to Arizona or Oregon (no sales tax there) and boost their economy.

They still make absorption refrigerators that run on natural gas, LP, and even kerosene. The kerosene refrigerators used to use the Aladdin Model 32 Burner. There will probably be a demand for the Aladdin table lamps; Models 11, 12, 14, and Nu Type B in my opinion are probably the best.

Where, exactly, are they going to charge all these new devices?

They can’t keep the power on now.

They’ll soon find out that electricity is not free, cheap, or clean. The advantage of small engines is power in a portable package. Battery packs are not truly portable since it takes ten or more to do the same work as a dribble of gasoline. And regarding the automotive engine ban by 2035– At the suburban level it is physically impossible for a neighborhood of commuters to all charge their electric vehicles at night. Even if they build more “dirty” power plants to provide the power the very Local distribution systems will all have to be replaced–new substations, lines and transformers. Lock, stock , and barrel. But don’t worry, the problem will be resolved long before 2035.

I was speaking with a guy who runs the repair center for a john Deere center. They also have Commercial grade chain saws. He told me that the Retail chain saw for consumers is going to pretty much go electric within 5-10 years anyway. Most personal chain saws are used HOURS a year and for ANY internal Combustion engine that is not going to work out well. With methyl alcohol in fuel the stuff turns to crap in 6-8 months. Electric chain saws for light duty can do most of the jobs a gas unit can do with a lot less work. I really think for home use this is a no brainer but for commercial use an 18 V electric chain saw is not going to work.

Full disclosure I have an 18v ryobi 8 inch limb trimmer that is AWESOME and a weedeater that i had to fix out of the box The fan blows the wrong way and it ” overheated ” NOT. Thermal shutdown from a lying sensor. Glued a laptop fan blade onto the wrong way fan and fixed it for $8 and about a 1/2 hour.

A neighbor just bought an electric hainsaw and showed it to me proudly. A Makita, nice little saw. Little being the operative word. $750 bucks. I bought a real nice little Husqvarna for $250 last year, about the same size. Mine will eave the battery one for dead.

But hey, for $500 he doesn’t have to pull a rope. Or keep a gas can. Me, I will stay with the stinking old gas ones. Haven’t seen an electric one yet that will come close to matching one of my bigger saws. If you cut much wood, you need a range of saws. That will get expensive.

hardscrabble farmer
hardscrabble farmer

The comparison of a decent Husky to a battery powered Makita is like a Mercedes to a gold cart. For homeowners trimming shrubbery or cutting up a downed tree limb, sure, but the timber industry?

It’s ridiculous to even discuss it.

Llpoh
Llpoh

That is true entirely. I cut our firewood. An electric chainsaw would simply not do the job.

Oh, add a splitter to my gas engine list. I guess I could do it by hand, but the splitter is so much better and faster and is great for kindling as it turns a large round into kindling in seconds.

BL

Llpoh- I have an electric chainsaw, it’s purely for small jobs. That does not mean that there are not more powerful models on the horizon.

Geezus, I am trying to count all the off-road engines I have, but I do not have enough fingers and toes. I gots me some lawnmowers, bunch of chainsaws, whippersnippers and hedge trimmers and dam pumps and munchers and generators of all sizes. Sure am glad that I don’t live in California.

I bet small engine repair is going to be a booming business, unless they pass laws banning the sale of spare parts, too.

I also have leaf blowers and gas powered post driver. And several more things I am both recalling at the moment.

I am going to go out and cut down several trees to spite the greenies. I loves me a big bonfire this time of year. Wonder how much carbon that pumps into the atmosphere? And I am gonna eat some steak, too. I bet those cattle put out a whole bunch of climate change gas. Fuck those greenies.

In my not ever so humble opinion the chainsaw is one of the most efficient users of fossil fuel ever developed. With a pint of fuel a properly sized and maintained saw can cut two months worth of fuel wood. Great fun too, especially the big boys. Of course there’s still the splitting, but that’s why one has sons… and ensures they honor traditional sex roles.
