Picture taken yesterday on the Wildwood boardwalk. When this store opened a decade or so ago, everything was $1 or lower. Now only a bottle of water is $1. I’m sure these price increases are only transitory, because Jerome Powell assures me we don’t have any long-standing inflation.

I’m sure they just improved the quality of the food, and therefore had to raise the prices. That’s all this is.
Now that’s funny right there!
And made the products in a smaller, more convenient size…How thoughtful!
at the local Dollar Tree here in S Oregon, they ripped the sign away that says “everything a dollar!”
part of the wall came down with it, looks appropriately third world
https://www.businessinsider.com/dollar-store-officially-dead-dollar-tree-dollar-general-2021-9
Are we there yet?
Hah! They have only sliced up the dollar one hundred ways. Now they can do the penny one hundred ways. There is nowhere to go but up! Just buy the f** dip, stupid.
I wonder how long we’ll be able to afford the horses
I never thought I would get to the point where I would have a farm and opt to not have horses, but here I am.
I’m guessing that the kid from the movie who was trying to collect his Two Dollars was actually a prophet. 🙁
“Better Off Dead” is that classic movie, and yes, that’s two dollars —
*combs hair back*
“PLUS TIP.”
That scene had always stuck out in my memory, so I thought it was funny when it eventually became a meme.
Three questions:
1. How much has GDP grown per year? (say, on average, for the last 2 decades)
2. What is the Fed’s target inflation rate?
3. What is GDP measured in?
My research led to my opinion that GDP is about as meaningful as unicorn farts.
You know what a $10 US Eagle gold coin was worth in 1792, the first year of production? $10. You know what it was worth in 1933, the final year of production? $10.
That suggests some kind of price stability to me. We were able to maintain a standard- based on the weight of a gold coin (270 grains) and its purity (22 karats)- for 141 years. Between 1933 and 2021-88 years- the value of that same coin denominated in Federal Reserve notes (not US Dollars which can only legally be coins, issued by Congress) went from $10 to just under $800 as of tonight.
You do the math.
And as an aside, did you know that the unit of measurement for precious metals- grains– is based on the weight of a perfect grain of barley?
Everything is, at its root, based on reality, it’s when you start making things up that everything goes off the rails.
Not nitpicking but a gold Eagle, or 1/2 ounce coin is just under $900. A Double Eagle or $20 gold piece is worth near $1800.
PS: our “Dollar Store” is now a “Five and Below”– everything is $5 or less ( same items that were a buck)
People, get your horse paste in abundance right now.
Why?
Why? You`re kidding, right?
No. Is there some particular threat we don’t know about? Are you scared of covid?
Ken31, Because of a multitude of manufactured crises that we read of on this site everyday leads me to believe that any and all concerted efforts to deny you of anything is a high probability. (Today I read of ivermectin outlawed in Australia)
They’re obviously willing to kill you and yours. Best to have med supplies on hand and in abundance.
Not afraid of corona viruses here but I do respect their right to fight to live.
Addendum; I know a lot of ppl that I’ve spoken to that haven’t got off their duff and stocked up. This was the purpose of my earliest statement.
I’m quietly grabbing all those items that disappeared from the shelves in 2020. Local Dollar Tree still has most stuff for a dollar, they had thermometers for a dollar and I grabbed five. Last year there wasn’t a thermometer to be found for under forty dollars around here. I’m wanting the old fashioned glass and mercury thermometers, no battery needed, and….seems like they don’t sell them anymore.
The KFC $5 fill up went up to $5.49 and has now gone up to $5.99 within a very short time. I’m guessing that within the next 30 days, it will rise to $6.50 and onward. I like chicken pot pie but not enough to pay more.
I’m anxiously awaiting five dollar a gallon gas…
MyG- Before its over, you will think $5 per gallon gas was cheap. Have you read Rand’s, “The New Left: The Anti-Industrial Revolution”? Rand pegged gas at (can’t remember exact in Atlas either) somewhere in the neighborhood of $26 per gallon. I realize fiction is fiction but if you factor in hyper, it could be worse even than that.
Hyper will be a very bitter pill MyG.
Hyper inflation would be one ugly critter. Been retired 20 years and my pension is still the same. Good thing it started out as a high end pension.
Amen! More reason to stay home and keep my firearms cleaned. Especially my elephant gun. You never know when the circus will loose one of their pachyderms and he might ruin my rutabaga patch with his big feet. Will have to build a new spit for that critter. Anyone know what sauce you use on elephant?
Remember the elephant jokes? Why do ducks have flat feet? To stomp out forest fires. Why do elephants have flat feet? To stomp out flaming ducks….
ok, I’ll let myself out….
My wife says there are people who want to “clone” a wooly mammoth. Lord help us all.
I hear them’s good eating…
Skins would make some big rugs…
Wait no more! It’s here! Gas station around the corner has premium car gas for $4.99.9 (close enuf) Meanwhile my local airport (KCCB) has Avgas (a boutique LEADED fuel) for $4.75/gal.
We ain’t seen nuthin yet.
Unfortunately, I think you are spot on.
English in such places tends to have arbitrary and negotiable meaning.
If they sell a bottle of water for $1, are they doing so to prevent false advertising that the sign implies? So cludgey.
an excellent nuisance lawsuit could be filed for false advertising, could make a quick few thousand in small claims court..
