I’m in MA. I don’t know what happened here in the last 10 days or so, but I noticed it especially this weekend that everybody in the stores seems to be masked again. Just like a year ago, but the difference is that now it is not mandatory, just encouraged.
My hypothesis is as follows: in the last 2 months or so, every town came up with their own mandates. Some had no mandate, some had it only for unvaccinated, some for everybody, some for children older than 2 and some for older than 5. Then, two weeks ago, they all announced different dates of when the mandate would be lifted. But because there had been so much confusion and, in my opinion, fatigue of people to keep up with which town has what, it has led to the default of people opting to just “wearing one to be on the safe side”. A sophisticated mind game, and the confusion has eradicated any resistance and has perfectly created learned helplessness, at least in my neck of the woods.
