Never before in the history of any civilization has there EVER been a deliberate effort to undermine the economy to recreate it into some green wonderland. I would caution against making too much out of losing to the goat herders. Winning was never the goal so I would not use Afghanistan as a measure of military prowess.

My active duty son was running marathons 4-5 times a week in training for a special job in the USAF, and he had the Moderna vax last year. He was exposed to the China virus on several occasions, coworkers who got very ill, but never caught the virus. The 2d shot did make him a little ill but he was fine in a couple days. He was in NM with family over the holidays and began feeling ill, tested positive. He isolated for the 5 days but continued to run distance while sick – he knows that many commando school students become ill during training and considered it a good opportunity to test his endurance.
That being said, I will pass on the vaccines. I had a bad hacking cough in Feb-Mar 2020, when that shit was going around. I took Nyquil and ate some chicken soup and felt better after a few weeks. Last month I had that nasty cough again and a headache, repeated the same and was better in 3 days. Robitussin with honey tastes terrible but works great, and I am nearly 65 and 30lbs overweight.

About the same time the Soviets had an entire armored division defeated in detail by the SADF at the battle of Cueto Cuenevale in Angola in 1986. This was the largest tank battle since WW2 at the time. They left 4,700 dead commie troops on the battlefield. I consider that a major death rattle of the USSR.
No, it was not “The Soviets” as in the Russian led Soviet Union – it was Cuban Communists leading Black Angolans (and yes they that got their asses kicked by South Africas military).
Also, it was mostly light armoured vehicles that were destroyed (300 – 400 as opposed to less than 100 tanks on both sides).
Granted, although “the Soviets” were not on the ground the Soviets did sell / provid a lot of the kit and a lot of the intel. However, although the soviets but did not have any combat “boots on the ground” they did have some trainers and advisors supporting the Cubans, one of which apprently took command of the Cubans to prevent a complete route, and may have caused enough of a rally to cause the South African defence force to halt their crushing attack.
The Cubans admit to loosing over 2000 men, so the presumtion is the rest were Angolan as even optimistic estimates only put the number of Soviet advisors / trainers in the mid double figure range.
The Soviets manned the armor and the Cubans and FAPLA did most of the dying. SADF captured 98, IIRC T-55’s and 450 trucks. There was also a squadron of MiG 21’s shot down. The Afrikaaners bombed the shit out of them with juiced up Mirage fighters courtesy of their Ees-ra-aylee allies.
