These COVID restrictions have resulted in a wave of suicides as people have lost everything. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), suicide came in as the tenth leading cause of death overall in the U.S., claiming the lives of more than 47,500 people. However, for people between the ages of 35 and 44, suicide was the fourth leading cause of death; for those between the ages of 10 to 35, it was second right behind unintentional injury.
I have reported that I was walking the beach and a man asked me how long I was here in Florida. His two teenage sons were surfing at the time. He said he moved here because his boys were becoming suicidal up north from being locked down, no school, and their vision of the future turned very dark. His boys were unable to play sports and their dreams were all lost.
It was becoming commonplace to see people jumping to their death during the Great Depression. When people lose everything, their future comes crashing down. Our politicians have such a callous view of us, the Great Unwashed. They have no problem partying behind closed doors as they destroy the lives of people they see as the scum beneath them.

I won’t quote a single verse from scripture. Read the whole chapter, read the whole book, read the whole Bible. that being said murder is murder even taking one’s own life. I have an issue with blatant murders, that murderers can ask God’s forgiveness , that’s how it works though. Taking one’s own life and God forbid the wife, kids etc. along with him (or her) , you have no opportunity to ask forgiveness at least in the mortal flesh.
I know God’s forgiveness is not what the thread is about. In early summer 2021 a neighbor just 1/2 mile from me decided to take his life and his wife’s along with him. It was not shoot her then me, it was , he lays down on the bed, she lays beside him head to head, he puts the handgun to his temple, fires , with the idea the pullet exits his scull and takes her with him. Man, evidently they both agreed to this method of exiting this world. The wife lived. No idea what condition she is in now, mentally or otherwise, or where she is. Someone said a psychiatric facility. Another source said the man, not “old”, was suffering from an incurable disease as I later learned having no idea the man was ill. This freaked me out for several weeks. I went two miles out of the way going to town so as not to drive by the house he did this in. Sad…

Mr. Walt, it’s like this, there are many memorials along the roads and highways where family and friends have been killed in vehicular accidents. It may be weeks, months before the memorial is placed, i.e. the loss may be such a shock no one wants to visit the scene of the accident right off the bat. Yes, I avoided driving by the neighbor’s house for a while. So what? It was a startling event. I chose not to be reminded of it at the time and to this day driving by that house I’m reminded of what took place. Suicide is a cop out. Grow a pair.

Your scenario , where does that come from? Mine is lived incidentally, neighbors among the man’s family. I didn’t see your story described in the link you provided. Was this a personal friend you knew the details or a general scenario?
I suppose no one is thinking about the emotional impact on the children of divorcees. Now their dad commits suicide so even as difficult the situation may be for the man, the kids will never have their father again. Sounds rather selfish to me abandoning the kids because the wife bailed.
I’ve lived divorce on both sides my friend. A child of divorcees then later in life a father in a divorce that included two children. My divorce was a definite “change” for certain and impacted me losing a good job because I could not concentrate on anything but the wife pulling up stakes. Friends, family, the employer , co-workers, they tired of hearing about it.
It took a good year to get over the divorce, I found another job, no choice as I did fulfill my obligation to pay child support. I have a relationship with my children, I did not cop completely out of my responsibility as a father by suicide. Had I done so I would never known my two grand children.
My story, the neighbor and his wife have two children , 13 and 10. Never will they go fishing and hunting with their dad again. Wonder how they will turn out because their father gave up? Grow a pair and you too, Walt.

It was clear to me from week 2 of this Covid thing that the single most important thing I have to do is to arrange our lives and routines in a way that would preserve our childrens’ hope, confidence and love of life, that protecting their mental health is even more important than any academic achievements. By week 3 or 4 I made a list of things we would do and not do to that end. I would say I shielded them relatively successfully, but I know at least one father who has suddenly quit his job to move closer to his suicidal son in an effort to prevent a parental worst case scenario.

I could not have a conversation with my ex because he did not respect me and took everything personally, and it all went downhill from there. I could not “make” him happy. If a marriage starts with illusions and expectations that have not been discussed and agreed upon, never mind.

Government has actively worked to destroy life and all hope of improvement over the past two years (well to be fair, the last 70 years). Someone takes their own life when they have no hope whatsoever that things will get better. Suicide is the ultimate measure of self-ownership, but a huge tragedy nonetheless.
For those under 18, it is an absence of safety and security and hope available even in their own homes. That is something that parents could be addressing, but are likely contributing to.
I was suicidal in my twenties when my chosen career did not work out. I have had some therapy, and two things stick out in my mind:
One therapist said “Don’t keep putting your hand on a hot stove!” That helped me get and stay out of destructive relationships, even if it meant being alone for a while.
The other said, “The only way out is through.”
It’s amazing to me how things change from day to day–I get down, and figure out a way to get through. I have been on the verge of ruin and homelessness a few times but made plans anyway to get through, and I scraped through. Life for me is to learn, not arrive, and have peace while I am doing it. It helps that I don’t give a sh!t what anyone thinks any more. That causes a lot of pain I don’t need.
One can come to that perspective when one is in control. The 10 to 17 crowd is not. That was my suicidal period, living in a horrible home situation emotionally. Only the prospect of getting out when I left for college at 16 helped me get through it. Once I turned 18, I never went back to live again. Far too many have no prospects and no view of an out. When you can’t at least find solace at home, when the outside world is hell, options appear limited.
I am so glad you were able to hang on and make a better life for yourself.
That’s why so many runaways, and vulnerable young people being exploited because they are so desperate they can’t choose properly. My home life was something I had to fight for–my parents were good people, but limited in their vision of my future. I got out also for college, made a lot of normal mistakes, did some things right, and hung on, and here I am. If I had not been searching so passionately for answers, I would not have gotten them. I am grateful to be strong (and stubborn) enough to be where I am today. I did my best. One other thing a therapist told me: “Just keep your end clean.” The best advice I have ever gotten.
