Amazing stuff.
Been to Le Mont St-Michel several times while I lived in France. It’s a great place to take friends and family that come to visit. The tidal flats around the island were at one time quite dangerous. The incoming water could outrun a human and a number of people drowned from venturing out onto the sand. The causeway built for the tourist trade made the sand buildup different and tamed to some extent the danger.
I’m surprised that Ayers’ Rock (Uluru) in Australia wasn’t on the list. Been there once, along with visiting Alice Springs. Great people and a thrilling site. The highlight was when our guide stopped near sundown and pointed us towards Ayers’ Rock and said to take pictures every 10-15 seconds from now until it gets dark (it was about 5 minutes or so) He said that the rock would change colors (become very dark and photogenic) from the everyday red sandstone. One could not see it with the naked eye, but the camera would tell the tale. It was a few days later that we got back to the States and developed the film and the guide was absolutely correct. There were a series of 2-3 pictures that were absolutely gorgeous. We were there in 2000, just before the Olympic Games. At that time you could climb to the top of Ayers’ Rock, but since then the indigenous people who are reclaiming the site have closed the climbing trail and will soon close the park to outsiders. It is one of their sacred sites.
I was at Ayers Rock in 2009, we tent camped and the stars were amazing. Also been to Garden of the Gods and I freaked out because the kids climbed up everywhere and I worried that they would break bones if they fell (30 feet plus with more rocks at the bottom).
My interest in visiting Australia has waned since they started arresting people for having a cold.
A place to avoid.
Over the course of perhaps six months, I’ve traveled all over Oz, but never felt a strong attraction to Ayers Rock (Uluru in the parlance of the locals).
I guess I’ve spent enough time in and around the Colorado Plateau and desert Southwest to feel that I’ve seen plenty of red rocks, even great big ones.
My own special places: California’s big trees, and winter above the tree-line on any rugged mountain. I particularly treasure those spots to which I know I will never return.
fantastic stuff, thanks for taking my mind off the shite for a moment at least
Thank you for these visual treats.
I’ve been to all 5 national parks in Utah, and had the pleasure of seeing a New Hampshire fall at its peak, but would love to visit Iceland to see its spectacles and the Northern lights.
I bought a BMW motorcycle in 2008 … and part of the ‘swag’ that BMW sent was of the publicity/advertising they’d shot in Iceland at the time …
It was breathtaking … and, of course, cruising there on a new Beemer at full-lean looked like the thing to be doing …
Been to Ferryland to see icebergs. It is well worth a trip. That lighthouse in Michigan looks like an ice giant that would make even Odin shiver. I’d like to go to many of the others places but alas I am an inmate in Justin’s prison.
Maybe it will change maybe it will never…
I hear Justin is a tough, but fair, ruler.

Denali, landing in a small plane on the Ruth Glacier….and the Canadian Boundary Waters, Crown lands
Yeah… thumbs up for Ruth Glacier!
Beautiful scenes. Especially liked the icebergs.
I haven’t traveled extensively but so far nothing beats the Tunnel View of Yosemite Valley or Half Dome from Glacier Point with the various waterfalls in view.
The Oregon coast is pretty spectacular, too.
Deep Karst Spring, Croatia – There is something about the way that looks. It’s like I’ve been there before.
Well, they thought naming it “Dark Blue Vagina, Croatia” was tacky.
