*sigh* The mortar shell has to travel a certain amount of distance before it is armed. Great training there.

Raise your hand if you’re willing to bet your life that the arming mechanism was manufactured to a higher standard of quality than the propellant charge.

.No electronics in there. Nose impact detonation unless it lands on it’s tail like that one. LAW’s, etc ud be right. I notice there’s no powder bags at all on the tail… Primer power only. Must not be an 11C in that bunch…

Uh, no. when you initially fire the mortar round the impact of primer charge and the propulsion charges propels the round out of the tube. This action causes a secondary reaction within the fuse portion of the round, as the mortar round rotates or spins the arming portion of the fuse is causing the fuse to arm itself for impact. The distance from the mouth of the tube to the exact point where the fuse is fully armed varies between the different types of mortar rounds. Each type; 60mm, 81mm or 4.2in(106mm) has a different arming distance.

No they don’t, some arm with setback caused by the round leaving the tube and then have impact initiated detonation.

I had one of those “Wankel” engines, too…in my 1978 Mazda RX-4. The engine didn’t blow up but I sold it when it had a head gasket leak.

I drove the shit out of my RX-7, great uptake and speed, and that engine never made a blip, never burned oil, never had to put a dime in it for repairs.
I thought it was a great engine. Don’t know why it never went any further

The rotary engine is designed to burn oil. Search it.

Used to race these in RX-7s.
Screaming little engines.
Since rotation is inline with output (no translational movement), vastly higher RPMs could be maintained.
And they had no “head gasket leaks” because they had no head.
The engine injected oil (and a small amount of antifreeze) into the intake to lubricate the rotor seals, as they cannot be passively splash lubricated like a piston engine.
Oil usage was minimal.
The illustration is the wankel cycle, equal to 3 combustion pulses per revolution.
The rotary engine in the RX-7 had two of these rotors, resulting in six combustion pulses per revolution, vs. only 3 for a 6-cylinder.
(The other 3 are exhaust strokes.)
Thus the handicapping rules for racing against piston engines.
The original 12A had cast iron rotary seals, lasting around 100K miles.
The 13B had ceramic seals, lasting considerably longer.
Short blocks are the size of a small TV.
I literally picked up my short block from the warehouse and put it in the trunk of my Plymouth Volare.
The engines are literally big balls in small package.

The “Poison Gas Pavillion,” funny as it is to see it written that way, is actually a poison gas museum located on Okunoshima, an island in Japan’s inland sea. The place is a war museum telling the history of the production of poison gas on the island and its detrimental effects when used in WWII.
