I took ritalin, and it did kill my appetite, it was in no way addicting and by the time it wore off for the evening I would over-eat, so I never lost any weight that way. It is important that it is appropriately prescribed for some form of dopamine dysfunction and not just behavior.

A distant family member and one of my children’s friends’ Dad just last week approached me what I thought of Ritalin for their combined autistic/ADHD diagnosed child. One 8 year old boy, one 6 year old girl. They are a bit odd and quirky kids, but, to me at least, just active and vibrant children. But what do I know, I am no “expert”.
I told them that I am not a big fan of psychotropic drugs for children, that I think sometimes a classroom setting is not a good fit for every child and that I think these “diseases” are convenient diagnoses for children that are, maybe, at the outer edge of what some people would consider normal.
I treaded carefully and left it at that. I chose not to yell: “Just take your kid out of the damn day prison and bring them home where they are safe from dangerous doctors and their drugs and can be kids, for crying out loud.”

Children never needed medication for their “hyperactivity” before the ’70’s, which ought to tell you exactly from where this new-age thinking sprung. Prior to that, how did teachers deal with such problematic students?
(Well, some of us are still old enough to remember getting sent to the principal’s office and having our asses busted by a cricket bat (with a knothole in the middle). Yet by the late ’70’s even that was already being phased out in favor of in-house suspensions and detentions… and drugs. They were prepping kids for careers in jail it seems; that cottage industry had to be built using existing clientele.)
There is absolutely no way any parent in his/her right mind ought to let a child be forced to take a medication because a school district says so (and has convenient doctors available to push those pills). It’s the worst feeling to have to carry around, impotent rage, and that’s what I have for everyone who did that to me (minus my parents; they just didn’t know back then what this stuff does to people).

I agree. I took it for brain damage and I needed it, and then I didn’t. I understand a lot of the science, but nobody can claim to completely understand how any of them work, and for most of them little is known. So, I think a child’s DEVELOPING mind is not something you want to experiment with in this way.
My cousin told the school principal to give drugs to the teacher. Her kids were not going to take them. This was 50 years ago.
I fought Ritalin for my daughter who was diagnosed with ADHD for a year until I found her crying over her homework. She was making D’s. I finally gave in and let her take it.
The change was instantaneous. Like flipping the proverbial light switch. She started making straight As and was able to stop taking Ritalin after two years. That was in 8th grade. She is now at the US Air Force Academy after graduating top of her class in high school.
It is in vogue to bash all drugs but they serve a very useful purpose properly applied.

I have heard that from other parents before. Lots of shades of grey and not all black or white with these decisions, I agree. I have also heard those stories that it turned their children into zombies and the parents did not like it, and yet they continued due to the pressure from teachers.
