In the USA, driving the speed limited does not give you the right hang out in the left lane. That lane is for passing only (no matter what speed you are driving). If you are not actively passing another vehicle, move to the right. Stop slowing the country down.

Having gotten pulled over for it just months after it had apparently become law here in Texas — and you know we’re always the last to know about new laws, and it’s not like lawmakers are going to tell anyone or anything — I can attest that, no, it is not an urban legend: “Left Lane For Passing Only” signs are all along the sides of the highways which only have two lanes.
Which is great. There’s nothing more frustrating than being on an Interstate, with a 75 mph speed limit, and get caught behind two assholes who are driving side-by-side, doing about 55 or 60. Supposedly this law was put into effect so emergency vehicles/cops have an open avenue, but it also helps with the slowpeds (or slope-heads). It definitely does.

Most states have a “keep right unless passing ” law.

The left lane is for through traffic in any city I have been in. It is not a passing lane unless it is on the open road.

I think the most annoying thing that has been written about the driving laws is that nobody and I mean NOBODY takes the time to find out the laws in a state they are visiting or have recently moved to.
For everyone’s information, in the state of Nevada, a commercial vehicle has the same rights to the traffic laws as a Ferrari. I don’t have differential speed rules and I can drive in any lane I want to.
The number one lane, which is the far left lane, is the through traffic lane, and has never been a passing lane while moving through a city.
I just want people to understand that traffic laws differ from state to state. Please do yourself a favor before you get killed on the highway. Read and learn from the rules of the road in whatever state you are traveling to or have moved to.
Let’s make our highways safer for everyone. Please learn the rules before you go and think brake checking a truck is the right thing to do.

You’re the road hazard that will cause a crash. Slow traffic in the right lane. A trooper I once knew pulled over people who did what you do because you impeded traffic. Mostly it would be a warning. Comeuppance for wasting other people’s time.

You parked in the left lane on the freeway? Um OK. Very few left turns allowed there. A coworker of mine had an uncle who drove a commercial truck. If people didn’t let him through on a normal road, he just moseyed on over to the left lane. Who’s gonna argue?
Back when 4 lane interstates were new, my Dad got pulled over for driving too slow in the fast (left) lane, probably in 1965. Only time I ever saw him get riled at LEO. But although he maintained his cool and only got a warning ticket, he still was very pissed and thought it was wrong.
As for our current situation, I drive a Prius Plug-In and there is no way to maximize gas mileage given the current traffic flow, at least not here in SoCal. When you’re on the freeway, especially in the boonies, you better be hitting 80 unless you’re in the far right lane, otherwise you’ll get run over. Even so my Prius gets 50 mpg. If I can maximize I can get that up to high 60’s. Great car!
