I put .40 S&W at the bottom scale of large calibers for handguns and .308 for rifles.
I would agree on the .40 S&W, I would start at 7 mm for long gun though.
I took some of my semi-auto pistols out last weekend and did some plinking. Outside of concealed carry, I find semi-auto pistols to be pretty useless (outside of the 1911 in 45 ACP). I had my Glock 40 cal dialed in last time I had it out and had to play with it last weekend because at 20 yards it wasn’t hitting the broad side of a barn. I take my S&W Shield 40 cal out often as that is my carry gun and I find the importance of practice with that.
I much prefer a revolver oover a semi (as I prefer lever guns over bolts). I grab my Smith 686 and 629 (357 / 44 mag) and can shoot them all day. Unfortunately the ammo is much more expensive. I do handload, but that takes time.
I may go to a J frame 357 mag revolver for carry. Do away with semi-autos and just keep a few for the fact that they shoot common rounds (9mm/40/380). Exception being the 45 ACP, I would conceal carry one of mine, but it defeats the purpose of ‘concealed’ LOL.
I CC and don’t give a shit about the law or permits. I carry a 9mm SS-P229 compact and a Ruger Black Hawk 357 in the car. I live in a small mountain town we don’t have a police force, only a sheriff and most of the deputy’s couldn’t care less., just let them know you have it should you get stopped.
The 40 is a popular police and NATO round its good to have one of these. I don’t have one but should get one.

I agree AMMO is the target and has been for a while. Brass is king, When I go to the range I collect brass, inspect it Mic. it, de-primer it and wash it in water and vinegar, then run it through a tumble polisher with low abrasive for 15 minutes. . Primers are also going to be hard to get. I have thousands of primers and still think it’s not enough . Going out to the popular shooting places in the area can yield a gold mine of once shot brass. I can walk away with a thousand casings sometimes of the calibers I need.

Agreed 10000%. I go to the local sports store and they sell them by the 100s, then limit them to 3 boxes. They aren’t priced up, so when they come in I go in and then send 3 others. Ordering the 1000 piece boxes online seems to be impossible now.

All the above will graduate someone to having a gun/reloading room. It is at that point you are set (almost). I mean, you are never truly 100% set.
