Pictorial Essay: 17 Grooviest Cars Of The 1960s.

Sure,  I’ve already done 3 pretty awesome Car Pictorials that were enjoyed by millions.  But, that was several years ago, and no one remembers it. Nevertheless, I will pick lesser known vehicles and try to avoid repeats.

Can’t wait for some dipshit to complain about posting NON-SERIOUS SHIT (!!!) during this time of deep crisis.  This person should become intimately familiar with DDD.  I’m just a tad bit weary of Covid, Country 404, Dementia & the DC Klown Show, LGBTQPKFUKOFF, and other such articles right now.  I need a little diversion. If you do also, enjoy.  (I’m choosing only 1960’s cars because by 1970 many or most American cars were shit and, I don’t remember jack shit before 1960.)

============================

MUSCLE

According to  Muscle Car Club    an American muscle car, by the strictest definition, is an intermediate sized, two door, high-performance oriented model, powered by a large V8 engine, at an affordable price.

1963 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray 'Split Window'

1963 Stingray.  IMHO, the most beautiful of all Vettes. I could look at it for hours. The Split Window model only existed for one year because of a disagreement between the two designers.  Others claim Chevrolet was forced to end it because  the split window impeded rearward vision and was daaaaangerous.   The standard 327 engine with  optional fuel injection ($480) produced 360 bhp.  You could order an optional 36 gallon fuel tank! Base cost about $4,200,  and the St Louis factory could barely keep up with the demand.

==========

1966 Pontiac GTO | Volo Museum

1966  GTO.  Simple in design, almost plain, yet possessing stunning elegance.  It’s a look that says ‘fuck with me at your own peril‘.  One of the most popular muscle cars of all time, and a ’66 in mint condition could easily set you back for over $1ook.

==========

1967 Ford Fairlane 500 2-Door Hardtop | W-CODE 427 V8

1966 Ford Fairlane 500 R-Code:  The Fairlane 500 went from a ho-hum family car in 1962 to holy-crap muscle in 1966. Ford gave this beast their legendary 427 cubic inch side-oiler V8 cranking out 425 horses and a phenomenal 480 lb-ft of torque.  Only 57 were made.

===========

1963 Chevrolet Impala Z11 - 2 | Chevrolet impala, Chevrolet, Impala

1963 Chevrolet Impala Z11.   Another ho-hum family car that briefly went into Bad Assed Beast mode. Under the hood of the Z11 is a 427 V8 engine that delivered 430 horses.  Chevy only built around 50  of them.  It is believed only 7 exist today. According to Conceptcarz, the car fetched $525,000 at auction in 2017.

===========

1970 CHEVROLET CHEVELLE SS LS6 CONVERTIBLE

1970 Chevrolet Chevelle 454 LS6 Convertible.  Piss off, MOPAR!  That 454 engine was the most powerful of its time  …. 450 horses and 500 pound-feet of torque,  0 – 60 in 5 seconds,  top speed 142 mph …. pretty damned good for 1970.  Hemmings estimates fewer than 20 exist today.

==========

1970 Dodge Hemi Challenger R/T Convertible | S101 | Phoenix • Glendale 2019

1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda Convertible:  Piss off Chevy!!  Only 780 units left the factory with the legendary 426 Hemi ….  only 21 were convertibles … which means you need to fork over at a minimum a couple million to buy one, if you can find one.

You Boomers fucked up, big time.  You saw this ad below back in 1970.  Yes, you did. You could have bought it for $4,600!!  Did you?  Nah!! You went and bought that Granada for $3,200.  You putz.  You coulda owned a million dollar car!!!!

LUXURY

1963 Buick Riviera - 1963buickriveriahardtopcoupe170799 Photograph by Frank J Benz | Fine Art America

1963 Buick Riviera:  The Buick Riviera marked General Motors’ first entry into the personal luxury car market segment. It sported iconic style features like the distinctive egg-crate grille and creased lines along the front and rear quarters. It  had a flashy interior to boot, with several upholstery choices, a fancy center console, and countless extra-cost options. After a trip to Europe, GM design head Bill Mitchell decided that he wanted an American personal luxury car that would combine the elegance of a Rolls Royce with the sportiness of a Ferrari. Many believe he succeeded.

=====

1961 Lincoln Continental Convertible | Blackhawk Collection

1961 Lincoln Continental:  Few people remember that Lincoln was in serious danger of being shut down by Ford in the late 1950s. They needed a blockbuster new car to save the marque. They got it in the slab-sided, Elwood Engel-designed 1961 Continental. Originally planned as the new Thunderbird, the car was reworked as a much larger four-door design with center-post, outward-opening “suicide” doors. The ’61 Continental, now forever associated with the Kennedy assassination, remains one of the most significant American car designs of the 1960s.

Pink CADILLAC 1960 Series 62 Convertible - Cabriolet - YouTube

 1962 Cadillac Coupe De Ville: I love you for your pink Cadillac. Crushed velvet seats. Riding in the back. Cruising down the street. Waving to the girls. Feeling out of sight. Spending all my money. On a Saturday night. Honey I just wonder what you do there in back of your pink Cadillac.”  Enough said.

======

1966 Oldsmobile Toronado:  This car was waaaay ahead of its time. Just SOME of its many innovations; The Turbo Hydra-Matic THM-425 front-wheel drive automatic 3-speed transmission (torque converter separate from the planetary gearset), the Rochester down-draft 4-bbl carburetor, spherical-shaped exhaust flange gaskets that allowed freedom of movement within the exhaust system and prevented leakage, flow through ventilation which eliminated the vent windows that also reduced wind noise, Toronado-based design drive train for GMC motor, GM’s first subframe vehicle, and on and on …… The legendary Super Rocket V8 engine powered the vehicle.  A potent 7.0 litres (!!!) 16-valve naturally aspirated V8 produced 380 hp and 644 Nm of peak torque at just 3,200 rpm. Base price was $4,500  (about $45,000 today). (It averaged about 38 miles per gallon.)

Spacious and Durable, 1964 Checker Marathon - eBay Motors Blog

Pick of the Day: 1982 Checker Marathon, brawny consumer version of famed taxi

1982 Checker Marathon A12 /  the last production year for the civilian, non-taxi model, and this blue beauty hardly looks any different than the silver 1964 Checker Marathon above it. Checker Motors was founded by Morris Markin, a Russian immigrant, who had a strong distaste for change. His philosophy was that once you get the right design —> stick with it.

The magnificent and legendary Checker Marathon, aka the New York Taxi, was introduced in 1960 and was sold until 1982. The Marathon was available as a sedan, wagon, and the interesting and rare 12-seater Aerowagon. Available with a straight-six or V8 engine from Chevrolet. It was designed and built from the ground up with a singular purpose; to be an absolutely dependable and tough machine. That is why they used and abused it as the definitive taxi vehicle for decades, and not only in New York but in other cities, as well.

It didn’t sell in big numbers which is somewhat odd considering it was one of America’s most durable and reliable vehicle.  But, the 1960s cars were all about tail fins,  bulges, chrome, more chrome, plushness, and people demanded changes year over year.  The Marathon had few options, hardly ever changed, and was simply to austere for the era.

1964 Ford Falcon Base | Hagerty Valuation Tools

1964 Ford Falcon:  QOTD; “Can ya get any plainer than this??“.  After seeing how compact cars were having an increasingly bigger market share, the Ford Motor Company changed its stand on small vehicles, and in 1960 came up with the Falcon. It was an immediate success.  Ford hit a home run with the compact yet roomy Falcon even though the car was absolutely nothing special or innovative in terms of design or technology.  I mean, the standard model only had a 2.4-liter measly 90 HP engine! The secret of the Falcon’s success was its affordability (Ford’s most inexpensive car) and a very long list of options — for example, the bigger six-cylinder or 260 V8.

10 Times Ford Falcon Owners Modified Their Cars To Perfection

Then again …. some Falcons are more equal than other Falcons

THE 1960s STATION WAGON!!!  Millions were built in the 1960s,  many were as powerful as muscle cars,  they could actually haul 10 people or a 4×8 sheet of plywood  ….. and they were just friggin AWESOME!  I really truly miss them.  Enjoy the video.

Everyone wants a Jaguar E-type, but which one is best?

1960s Jaguar E-Type:  A timeless beauty with barely a straight line anywhere on its flanks, Enzo Ferrari said the E-Type was “the most beautiful car I have ever seen“.  Hard to disagree.  From 1961 to 1975, the E-Type defined the British sports car. When this car first came out, it was one of the fastest on the road.  In 1965, Autocar magazine stated that “In its 4.2 guises, the E-Type is a fast car (the fastest we have ever tested) and offers just about the easiest way to travel quickly by road.

Volkswagen Type 2 Camper Van High Resolution Stock Photography and Images - Alamy

1965 VW Microbus:  Introduced in 1950 by Volkswagen, but it really came into popularity  during the ‘60s, when it became the archetypal “hippie van,” and a symbol of the counterculture movement. In 1975, while stationed in Greece, I bought an orange and white bus from a hippie (not kidding) for $500.  I painted flowers and other hippie shit all over (not kidding).  The whole back end was basically a mattress.  Colorful beads separated the bedroom from the driver.  One weekend five of us decided to go see the Oracle of Delphi and the real Mount Olympus which was nearby. We BARELY made it to the top. That woefully underpowered engine never getting out of 2nd gear or faster than 20 mph.   I think we pissed off a LOT of drivers stuck behind us. But, we were doing hippie shit like drinking Ouzo and smoking joints so we didn’t really give a shit.

1964 Porshe 911:  There is much beauty in simplicity. The 1964 911 wasn’t a powerhouse, with a 128 hp flat six cylinder, but the beauty and handling dynamics were all there. The infamous Porsche options list began here, with targa tops and gasoline burning cabin heaters available in the ‘60s. While it wouldn’t get a turbo until the ‘70s, this is where it all started.

THE ULTIMATE CLASSIC CAR!!

20-Years-Owned 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Convertible for sale on BaT Auctions - sold for $64,501 on May 27, 2021 (Lot #48,608) | Bring a Trailer

1957 Chevy Bel Air:  OK, I missed the 1960s by three years. So, sue me!  Elvis.  The Beatles. Marilyn Monroe. Herman Munster. All mythical icon superstars,  just like the Bel Air. Considered to be among the most recognizable American cars of all time. The car made its debut during a unique time in American history;  1957 was an age of economic prosperity and technological advances, when average wages and consumerism were growing at an unprecedented speed. And Chevrolet leveraged that zeitgeist by bringing to the public the right product in the right place at the right time — an affordable and yet beautiful-looking car that was perfectly adapted for the rising middle-class. And it was no slouch! The potent fuel-injected 283 version could sprint from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 7.7 seconds and top out at 128 mph.

===================

Bonus Section:  WTF was I thinking??

1975 Ford Capri RS3100 For Sale by Auction

1975 Mercury Capri:  I was discharged in 1975 and needed a car for college.  We got extra discounts if we ordered a car while overseas, so in 1974 while still in Greece I ordered the car just like the one above.  Of course, there were no Lincoln dealers in Athens!  I ordered the car without seeing it in person,  giving it a test drive, etc.  Truly one of the dumbest of dumbfuk things I’ve ever done. My final tour was in southern CA (Victorville)  so I picked up the car in Los Angeles.

I had my WTF!!!!  moment within about 60 seconds …… I couldn’t fit in the car!!  I had to tilt my head 45 degrees, bend my ankles,  and contort my body in ways I didn’t know it could bend just to get in.  Oh, it was a stick shift,  oh what effing joy THAT was!  Within a few days I took it to a body shop, they took out the seat and moved the rails as far back as they could. That, plus tilting the seat, made it drivable …  even if I felt, and looked, like I was lying down on a recliner.

I bought it because I was Being Responsible.   We just had a gas crisis in ’73 and my post military income would be like my pecker, small and barely adequate, and the insurance was cheaper on that car than the one I really wanted. In other words, I bought something I could afford … a mistake I rarely  made again.

It was woefully underpowered and made worse because it was a California car which by then already mandated something called a “catalytic converter”.  It was faster than my dad’s 1961 VW bug (another truly iconic car), but not by much.  On the plus side, I had it for 6 years,  no repairs ever, and still running strong at 90k miles before I crashed into a guard rail and totaled it.

One last thing …. the real tragic part of this tale of woe. This is the car I REALLY wanted, and I could have afforded it as it was only about $1,700 more … a studly car … a car where I could have actually picked up babes (instead of babes pointing at my wannabe pimpmobile and laughing) …. this iconic beauty … 1975 Pontiac Trans Am

I don’t buy this horse metric malarky. This could even pull as much plow as a single horse. If you hooked it to a plow it would just spin around like a hamster wheel. Maybe that’s a better metric: 450 hamster wheels!

Of course hamsters are pretty small and to make it sound more powerful it would probably work better to measure it in megahamsters.

I owned a 1972 Chevy Vega, lemon yellow that was a wreck looking for a place to happen. I learned how to change out everything from an alternator to a water pump while I owned that little POS and I even bought a Vega with a blown engine for the manual transmission and paid a guy $250 to install a clutch and the “new” transmission.

(Note: My father put the $75 parts car up on blocks for me and I removed all the connectors and prepared the transmission for dropping, which my father helped me with. I was 17 and pretty darned capable for a girl.)

Bought the thing from my sister for $300 in 1978; she’d bought it brand new and had already replaced an engine. POS is a nice term for what the little rattletrap was, but it got me where I was going, most of the time.

I’m confused, but proud of you anyway.

‘It only left me in the lurch a few times’ is not much of a testimonial.

It was a crappy car. GM’s first venture into Nikasil plated cylinders was a failure.

Who was in charge? Didn’t this sort of thing lead directly to the bailout of GM, who have lately given us the Volt, or Goat, or whatever they called it?

I guess my point was that in 1978, things were a LOT different in many ways. People actually learned to make their cars run instead of calling Uber.

They aren’t live now, but the show was good.

Any modern 2 liter sport sedan will eat either of them for lunch, in any sort of race. They were barges with more power than they could safely use. They were too heavy, had crappy suspensions and feeble brakes. The recirculating ball steering was almost criminal.
Not only all that, but they didn’t last very long in the real world.

I made the huge mistake of buying a ’75 Pontiac Astra, a tarted up Vega.
As advertised, by 80,000 miles it was burning oil like an ocean going tramp freighter.
80,000 mile is also when the clutch wore out and the timing belt broke. Also by that time, the body was disintegrating with rust.
Iconic? Why?

I had a 64.5 mustang for a couple years and it handled great but was a mishmash of parts ford threw together that always was a puzzle for the parts guys. Definitely a fix or repair daily car. I still vote for the 60s MGs and Triumphs after the E-Jags.

Mine was a deep blue with metal flake in the paint, V8, 289, convertible, black top , the interior was a paint matching blue. One sweet little car. One thing I found interesting was the rocker panels were galvanized metal, no rusting but had to be painted after the winter of road salt and sand beating on them.

I had a 200 in-line six (there was a circle track class for the 200 c.i.d. but they ran three one barrel carbs) in my ’81 Mustang. I modified the intake manifold to accept two one-barrel carbs, cleaned up the horrible intake port casting, added a performance header, cammed it up a bit and put some more suitable read end gears in. I also added an electric fan.
The result was quite good, but it wasn’t ever a car I dreamed about.

The T 1o Borg Warner was supposedly the most bullet proof thing but I think those were in Fords? The Ford C-6 automatic was a good one too. Chrysler Torque Flight was good. Pretty hard to not have one or two transmissions replaced in anything from GM. If you tow, count on it.

I always wanted a 66 Stingray. Guess I’ll be wanting one for the rest of my life because they are unobtainium for me.

I stopped at a little car lot to look at a 70 Mustang like my best friend in high school had. They wanted 18K. It would have taken 30K more to make it nice. Pass.

Even a Lemans, which is the base for the GTO has gotten out of reach. Late 60s and early 70s Camaros and Firebirds, forget about it.

Nixon and the EPA destroyed the muscle car era. Even the Trans Am pictured was woefully smogged down to around 200HP.

Do you remember the ’75 Grand Am? It was a full or midsize then and had a 455. A friend had one and he was about half nuts behind the wheel and scared the bejeesus out of me in that thing. Then they made them into teeny bopper girl cars with the 2.5 Iron Duke 4-popper.

My dad was a car nut and the Jaguar E-type he had was the coolest with a one-piece front end that tilted forward.
he liked Italian sports cars also. But raced Chevys and Dodges. I always wanted a 57 chevy with a gasser style front end.

All of the E-Types had a hood (bonnet) like that. Unfortunately, they also came in an automatic transmission as an option.
Stupid me, I brought a used E-Type thinking that switching to a manual would not be so difficult, but….
little did I know that the whole car had serial numbers on all components (like engines and transmissions). If the serial numbers do not match the value drops somewhere to below sea level.
So then, I was stuck with a car I didn’t really want and didn’t like. Another thing I learned that the worst of all of the E-Types was known as a E-Type series 1 1/2, auto transmission 2+2. The only E-Types with a soft top were Roadsters, not “Fixed Head” (hard top to us) and the 2+2. The 2+2s were supposed to seat four people (good luck with that).
I kept the freaking Brit. thing for a couple years and finally a man called and asked to buy it. At least I got most of my money back.
Lesson learned, boy and howdy.

Now I’m working on a 1931 car. It ain’t real purty, but it’s been in the family since 1952, low mileage. Best part is that it can run on gasoline, alcohol or diesel. Not kidding, it was rated for it. I think the compression was designed with about 4.5 to 1, a square bore/stroke 4″ x 4″.
It drives like a tractor and it’s slow, but it goes.

PS. Alcohol dissolved parts of the fuel system, specifically, the cork parts for the fuel level float and some of the gaskets. I’m replacing those parts and others to original specs. for alcohol use.
PPS The car never ever had that kind of problem until the introduction of corn in gasoline.

Correct – ethanol does damage to old fashioned fuel systems. I have two vintage era bikes that cannot take anything other than premium ethanol-free gas. Had to pay $2.20 CAD per litre last night ($6.40 per USG). Forty dollars was not enough to fill up both tanks from 2/3 empty. When I bought that ’82 Seca in ’87, four dollars and 20 cents filled that tank from empty.

I had a Honda CB 450 around ’70. I ran ethyl in it. Ethyl fluid contained a dye which would distinguish treated gasoline from untreated gasoline. I thought it was cool fuel because as I recall the dye was pink/red.

A 1976 silver Capri was my first car. I got it in 1977. It had been rolled and my brother bought it at a car auction, fixed it up and sold it to me for what he had in it. I had to borrow 2K. I loved that car. Black vinyl seats, no A/C and I still loved it. It took me 2 years to pay off that car. A 15 year old driving on his learners permit to school took too wide a turn at a corner and hit me in the front. Knocked off the front bumper and caused enough damage that the insurance company totaled it.

I replaced it with a 1979 Datsun 200sx. Loved that car, too. I had it for 10 years before another teenager hit me from behind and totaled that one. It was too hard to get the kids in and out of the back seat since it was a coupe. It was time to get something more family friendly.

In 1970 I was 15 and a half, living in Socal and just got my learners permit. Took Drivers Ed. in high school and was learning to drive in my dads 1966 Chevy Biscayne with a 250ci six. Then he got a 1970 Dodge Monaco with a 440/4brl, what a beast! We moved back to NY and I got my DL when I turned 16, three days later I got a speeding ticket on the Taconic Parkway for 110mph. They didn’t have radar back then, the cops would time you between two lines on the road. I got a letter a month after that saying my DL was suspended for 30 days, can’t tell you how mad my dad was, I had no business driving that car at 16 years of age.

L88s were available from the factory three years only; 67-8-9. Something like 20 67s made, 60 68s and 120 69 models. None had 5 speeds as such was not available from GM until the80s. All were 4 speed with a few specially modified Turbo 400s.
I swore to myself that I wouldnt even bother reading – much less commenting – on an article from stucky again, but thought that since it was about cars that I would be safe…and I just cant help myself.
Of course, a Corvette isnt a muscle car – its a sports car – and neither is a 63 impala. Nor a Cuda [pony car there], but I’ll try and stop the pedantry and go look for the previous articles. It IS a nice break from the ‘normal’ heaviness… 🙂

The Eliminator had a 428 cobra jet motor…
Meercury Cougar

I first took notice of one back in the day. Lost my license, dui, working in a vineyard running the irrigation system. Driving around unplugging sprinklers in an old beaten up f250 4×4 with no windows on a cold windy day. Spotted two spinklers round the middle of a row…. F******KKK. Jammed the truck into reverse, popped the clutch hit the gas, Pissed off… wheel hopped backwards until there was a rather large crunch.

Pulled ahead, got out. There was a lady standing at the side of a white cougar having a screaming fit. Hood crumped, bowed up, grill busted… not something you could buff out in an hour. She wanted my drivers license, told her I didn’t have one, suspended. She demanded I give her the insurance papers for the truck… I held my hand out towards the truck and asked her to take a good look at it and decide if she thought that maybe it might not have insurance… She nearly fainted when I confirmed it had no such papers… its a vineyard beater. She demanded I go with her to see the vineyard manager… I said nope, gotta go back to work, cya.

At the end of the day I went to fill in a time card and Ted, the manager, came to me and said a very angry lady came up into his office. Ranted for a full ten minutes nonstop and barely took a breath. When she finished screech’n he asked if she had his permission to be in the vineyard. The blank stare was met with a ‘vineyards are no place to be driving around’ and an invite to leave. The smile on his face meant he enjoyed the show and he muttered, it was a nice car too…

I remember it like it was yesterday… two cougars in one day. One had very nice lines the other was fat and had dark hair…

GNL, if when you are trying to find the Lincoln TC you might look for the Lincoln Towncar Signature L sedan. Why? Because the length of the car ( and specifically the back seat) is six inches longer. Also, there was a recall on the power steering having to do with a rack and pinion part. As I recall ( no pun intended), the part was fairly cheap and can be replaced without tearing down the entire front-end.

I’m 6’4″ and drove a 1974(?) capri 3.2 for a bit during e&e training in west germany. No issues fitting in to it and the thing was genuinely fast for its time. Fantastic for things like southern crosses but bounced badly on tracks.

However, the car that stole my heart was a 1972 Volvo 142GT with after an aftermarket supercharger. Invisible (people notice cars they own, flashy cars, and cars they covet – so, for most, not volvos) on the street, roomy, and insanely agile on eurocobbles, gravel, and concrete – I’ve never owned anything other than a Volvo since.

1966 Oldsmobile Toronado: -It averaged about 38 miles per gallon. Is that a mis- print? Thats incredible. I knew back in the 70’s they had carburetors that could get 60+MPG. That technology was suppressed by big oil cartel and other special interest groups. A few of those inventors that wouldn’t sell out ended up dead. We have been scammed. The whole energy industry is a scam.
I have just recently been exploring FREE energy using magnets. Magnetic generators are a real thing and they work. The materials and parts to make them are not rare earth or expensive resources with exception of copper. I am doing the research on building my own magnetic generator. I am convinced for under $2000 I can build one that will produce enough electricity to power a home. Minus the cost of materials to build and occasional nominal cost of maintenance , A free unlimited power source. The whole green new deal energy agenda is a scam.

Write an article? Thats sounds challenging because I’m not a physicist or engineer. I envisioned it long time ago but just recently been spinning the theory in my head and being such a simple concept was sure that thousands of others had thought on the idea as well. So, I typed in “magnetic generator” in the search bar and dozens of videos demonstrating it as practical, fairly inexpensive, various designs, and most importantly producing free electricity. The foundational basis for how our universe functions in the physical plain is electro-magnetics.

I have been WAY down that road. Ever heard of Steorn?

For 30+ years I have checked out many of the “Free Energy” claims. So far, every one has made major claims, not one has delivered.

Remember, there is only one way to prove you can make free energy. By demonstrating you can make free energy. Good luck.

I do believe in free energy if one has a collector(not free):i.e. panels/wind turbine/water wheel ect.,all which will need maintenance but the energy then is free.

I have no doubts that energy collectors have been in many ways suppressed and that storage(i.e. batteries ect.)have also been suppressed.

That said,more ideas coming out daily and as long as net up we will see more innovative ways to “collect” energy.

Imperials during this period were substantially wider, both inside and out, than other Mopars, with front and rear shoulder room equal to 64.0 in (1,626 mm) and 62.0 in (1,575 mm) respectively. The front seat shoulder room measurement remains an unsurpassed record for Imperial and would remain the record for any car until the 1971–1976 GM full-size models. Exterior width reached a maximum of 81.7 in (2,075 mm) for 1961–1963, which remains the record for the widest non-limousine American car.

Was in an art gallery 20+ yrs ago, and there was a painting of a blue Checker Aerowagon sitting in a rural field.
8 doors. Bought it, and it still resides above our headboard.

We had a 56 Bel Air 4 dr., black & white. Great car but no A/C, so it was traded for a 64 Impala sedan when we moved back south. 327, 250 HP. Oil burner, crappy car, but fast.

I saw the most beautiful ’56 Nomad wagon, red and white with all the chrome I have ever seen last Sunday on I-294 near O’hare airport. My Dad had a ’57 Sedan Delivery with a 265 and three on the tree with overdrive.

Got to agree on that ’63 Sting Ray — the most beautiful of all the ‘Vettes, ever …

The Buick Riviera and the Oldsmobile Toronado were fine looking luxury cars … not sure how they were to own …

Missing are a couple of cars from Studebaker from the (’50s and) ’60s … Studebaker GranTurismo Hawk and the Studebaker Avanti. The Avanti was ahead of its time in some ways — too bad Studebaker never made a go of it on that car alone.

The Jaguar XK-E was one of the elegant sporting cars of the era — not just a British 2-seater and all the implied, but it had an amazing style to it — Enzo was right to respect it for what it was.

And, so, with all of those amazing possibilities — what have we got today? Nothing that has style and beauty and grace … just cement blocks being pushed down the road … so many looking alike.

Sad …

As my former wife says — change is inevitable, growth is optional … too bad she’s right …

That was an enjoyable post, Stuck. And a nice respite from the doom and gloom, indeed.

I always saw automobiles as a necessary evil and means of transportation. But my father enjoyed telling me about the classic car auction he went to and I listened politely as he told me about some of these pics being there.

My old man had a Buick with a 455 cu in. We used to haul ass between Barstow and Needles, California in the mid and late 70s. My uncle was in the highway patrol in that area, and we had family in Needles. As a result we knew there was only one patrol car that covered that strip of highway – out in the morning and back in the afternoon by memory. We knew when he would be where. We would wait til he passed us, then would head out.

That land yacht would fly. Couldn’t hardly see the road, as the front end would rise up so much at high speed due to wind pressure lifting it up. It is 143 miles Barstow to Needles. We could make it in about an hour fifteen or so. Yee-hah! Almost no traffic on that road back then.

You could watch the gas gauge needle fall, it burnt through so much gas. Gas was only about $0.50 a gallon back then. I can’t remember how much we burnt through making the trip, and it had to be dangerous as hell given the quality of the tires back then, but for $20 bucks in fuel or whatever, we grinned ear to ear on those trips.

I was in the same car once, out on a date. A couple guys in a muscle car pulled up along side me at a light. Well, the Buick looked like a nice old lady car, but I knew different. So I goosed it just to show the other guys, and immediately let off the gas, throwing smoke and rubber. What I hadn’t seen was
the cop car sitting on the opposite corner. Oh, shit, I am screwed, thought I.

The cop hit his lights and here he came. Well, Lordy be, he pulled over the two in the muscle car and let the little old lady car pass on by. Bwahahahahahahahahaha! Too bad for them. I am sure they could not explain that shit away. The cops would never believe the Buick caused all that ruckus when they were in the Cuda or whatever it was. I imagine those two unfortunates still tell the story. Wonder what happened to them. Bwahahahahaha!

Loved that car.

Couldn’t give them away in Spanish speaking countries. No va in Spanish = no go/it won’t go. Lost a lot of sales because of that.

My 1970 Challenger R/T Special Edition was the one car I wish I still had. Although not a hemi (that would have been one of 40 made), it was a big block 383 Magnum and was one of about 2800 made that year (R/T S/E Challengers were 4200 of the 70,000 production run in 1970).

Also really nice and unique for 1970 – The 1970 Challenger T/A with 340 six pack.

Sorry, can’t take a list about 60’s muscle cars that doesn’t have the ’69 Camaro on it. Major disappointment.

Just finished the 2022 Hot Rod Power Tour. You could have seen all these cars and more on the road doing their thing. About 2000 miles of classic cruising. I drove my 1953 Ford F100 Panel hot rod and had a blast.

Any day now…….Great to read about cars,however we are entering perhaps the two most important weeks in American History.No not the ghetto high school in Newark NJ, but the supreme courts decision on Roe V. Wade. It will be be put off as long as possible until the kiddies leave high school and college,so the protesting will be minimal just like the the Vietnam war when everybody went home. Out of sight out of mind.
Back then there was the weather underground, yippies, and Earth First to unleash mayhem on places, things and people whom they didn’t like.
More recently in the summer of arson and still it is BLM and Antifa.
This week or next it will be Jane’s Revenge who,in a giant temper tantrum will try to destroy anything in there path to avenge a law they find unjust,

Be careful, wherever you are. This will be hate on steroids.

I was driving a 1986 Jetta diesel when this was released. Made me laugh when I first heard it on the radio while driving at 92mph, foot bending the pedal, black soot trail obscuring everything behind.
