Alignable’s July Rent Report is being released right now, based on a poll that concluded this morning, conducted among 3,553 small business owners.
It shows that rent struggles are severe for several small business sectors, including transportation (trucking companies & car services), restaurants, retail shops, and beauty salons. What’s the cause according to SMBs? Rent hikes, labor costs/the ongoing labor shortage, the high price of gas, and reduced consumer spending are all combining to create economic instability.
Restaurants Couldn’t Pay Rent In July
Here are some quick highlights:
- The recovery rate for small businesses is at an all-time low of just 25%. That means 75% of small business owners have yet to earn the same monthly revenues they generated prior to COVID.
- 46% of SMBs say they’re paying higher rent now than they did six months ago.
- 45% of restaurants (up 7% from June) & 44% of retailers (up 9% from June) couldn’t afford their July rent.
- In fact, for restaurants & retailers, their rent delinquency rates in July were the highest they’ve been since the end of 2021.
- 40% of salons couldn’t make rent in July, up 15% from 25% in June.
- 48% of small businesses in transportation didn’t have enough cash to pay July’s rent.
- The overall rent delinquency rate for U.S. SMBs is 34%, just 1% shy of 2022’s highest rate (35% in June).
- The situation is a bit worse in Canada, where the rate is 37%.
- 42% of SMBs in MA, 41% in NY, 40% in IL and 37% in MI weren’t able to fulfill their rent obligations in July.

I have to say, I do not like being in an area that has a certain % of bobongos either but, I do think that the best determinate of a “good” area to live is where the incomes are high. I met a very nice black couple this weekend. They are successful, they are welcoming, they are very polite (and not the sly polite), they live in a predominantly white neighborhood and best of all, they paid on time.
Wish Thomas Sowell, Walter Williams were my high school teachers. And justice Clarence Thomas is my neighbor.

If I have to reach into one of two bag of snakes, and pull out a snake, if one bag has 50% poisonous snakes, and the other 5%, I know which bag I am reaching into. And make no mistake, if you reach into a bag of black snakes, a lot more of them are going to be poisonous than the bag of white snakes. And I made sure I taught my kids that as well. Have I ever been attacked by a hand of whites? No. Have I ever been attacked by a gang of browns? Once. Have I ever been attacked by a gang of blacks? More than once. You do the math.
Blacks are 13% of the population and commit 50% of the violent crime. They are six times more likely than whites, on average, to commit violence. They are like 50 times more likely to attack a white than a white is to attack a black.
Color has a lot to do with it. Maybe everything. (Not the color, of course, but the damn rest of the genetics that go with the color.)
I take ever individual as they come when I meet them. But I make decisions on where to go, who to be wary of, etc., when out in public based on well known odds. I don’t worry much about Japanese, Chinese, Orthodox Jews, Sikhs, etc, but I keep one eye open around brown folks, and I do my level best to stay entirely clear of those with lots of pigment.

A lot of local restaurants started charging a fee for using credit cards earlier this year. My favorite greasy spoon is among them and this weekend, they had a sign posted that all plate meals would be increasing by $1, effective today.
We like to eat out a couple of times a week, but it is starting to get expensive for lunch out.

I would like to help restaurants but I don’t.
I would like to eat food I cook. I don’t have to drive to get food for the meal. I know the high quality of my raw materials. Cheaper as well.
My boss invited us to Oliver Garden last Friday. After the meal we felt sleepy. It was due to the poor quality. It doesn’t happen when eating my own food.
Cooking your own delicious food is not only very satisfying,
it is orders of magnitude less expensive than a restaurant,
and nobody leaves bodily fluids in it unless you decide to.
And you get to season it as you see fit.
My fam has a small restaurant, been trying to sell last few months, no bites even after slashing the price, to everyone complaining about little small dollar increases needs to understand that 99% of restaurants food costs have doubled in comparison to a year and half ago and don’t even get started on staffing.
All the mom and pop places will eventually close…only big corporate brands will be left unfortunately .
Already happened here to many. The ones that are still in operation are just about finished. Even the pubs are showing signs they are failing. Went for a burger and beer last week at a pub I hit when in town. Burger patty was half the size of last month and there were less than 20 fries. I won’t go back.
It’s not a labor shortage, it’s a wage shortage. People are going to chase the highest wages. You won’t convince someone to lose money for the economy.
This may be a radical suggestion but maybe landlords should consider not raising the rent or even providing a little rent relief. Often what happens to these rental properties is that they go unoccupied for long periods of time because no business can afford them. Would it not be better for the landlords and the economy in general to at least have some business entity occupy these store fronts? Maybe that would cut into the landlords profits a bit but it is better to make something than nothing I would think.
Seems like restaurant owners need to learn to work hard, save, and cook within their means.
I am not sure why. When we want to go out to eat the Restaurants are packed, it is hard to find a place to park in their lots. So many Restaurants went out of business during the forced shut-downs and their are so few left it is hard to even find a place you to get into where I live. Inflation and higher prices don’t seem to be keeping people at home to eat.
So what else is going on here? I know there is a labor shortage and you have to wait longer, but the places are still packed.
