A minor earthward-directed Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) already hit Earth’s magnetic field on Wednesday. NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) expects a more powerful earthbound CME to strike Thursday-Friday.
SWPC has already issued geomagnetic storm watches for a minor geomagnetic storm today, a strong geomagnetic storm on Thursday, and a moderate one on Friday.
The impacts will be insignificant now, but that could change tomorrow as a strong geomagnetic storm can spark power grid fluctuations, create satellite irregularities, and degrade radio and GPS signals. SWPC’s storm severity scale is 1-5.

On Aug. 14th, a dark plasma eruption hurled one CME toward Earth. On Aug. 15th, an exploding magnetic filament launched another CME right behind it. The two CMEs will arrive together on Aug.18th, according to the latest forecast model from NOAA:
This could be a “Cannibal CME” event. In other words, the second CME might overtake and gobble up the first, creating a mish-mash of the two. Cannibal CMEs contain tangled magnetic fields and compressed plasmas that sometimes spark strong geomagnetic storms.
Geomagnetic Storms will be visible to the naked eye in the US as far as Illinois and Oregon (geomagnetic latitude 50 degrees).
The sun is in a very active 11-year solar cycle called Solar Cycle 25, which began in December 2019.
The solar cycle peak is expected in 2025, but even before that, its presence will be felt on and around Earth via CMEs disrupting modern life.

I sat out for a while last night at Duck Lake Creek on Lake Michigan waiting, nothing…….But what a circus! On any given night I’m the only one out there except for critters.
The road was lined with 50+ cars, 100+ people on the shoulder sitting in chairs all with their phones pointing up yakking, turning on mag lights, eating, and yakking, and turning on lights and eating, and fucking non stop yakking.
I hate people when I’m out at night, and during the day, and driving, and out for a drink, and pretty much all the time.
Anyway, from time to time the sun spits out some stuff and if we’re lucky it’s directed towards earth and if conditions are right, Aurora, unlucky I guess if it’s a massive grid down event, but fuck it, bring it.
A cannibal CME is just a faster moving CME that overtakes a slower CME, tonight should be a better chance so I’ll be heading a little farther north, but because of media hype, I’m sure people……..

I guided tours for a short while, and was up in Fairbanks, and my group got to see a Kp 9, the highest on the Aurora scale. I think it was a G2 or 3 storm. The sky virtually was exploding with color for at least an hour. It’s a Kp 7 today. Fairbanks is the place to go to for Aurora viewing in US. Just north of town is the Murphy Dome, a great viewing spot. Anchorage can also be good. But it is very rainy now with super dense clouds, so our chances of seeing anything are slim. It’s a very spiritual experience to see. Everyone was in a very blissful state after viewing. It should be on everyone’s bucket list.

It’s a beauty thing. To see such a spectacular phenomenon makes one feel he is in God’s grace. Not some people, everyone. Thats why I say it’s a must see for everyone’s bucket list. You have to experience it. I have been on tall mountain peaks, snorkeling on the barrier reefs, Boating and Whale watching in the glacier covered Fjords, and all are amazing. But nothing comparing to seeing the Aurora Borealis when they are active during a solar storm. Native Americans would take trips North to get healing from the Aurora. I do not doubt this.
Would love to see the Aurora in person. Too old to move there now.

But no, everyone was extraordinarily polite & kind. Everyone’s just having a good time. Oh, everyone was white too. No problems whatsoever.
