As an aside, I note that silly humour (assuming people consider it humour) never does very well on FF judging by the voting. That’s to be expected, I guess, of a largely American audience. John Cleeze spoke on this: “Python’s silly, and American comedy is great. That was a Robert Heinlein book. Farnham’s Freehold. Farnham and his family (taking refuge in a bomb shelter) wind up blasted into the future by two atomic bombs detonating simultaneously near their shelter. Wind up in a world where blacks have taken over, whites are slaves and considered food.
Robert Heinlein book “Stranger in a strange Land” – the man was pretty messed up. Basically the story is about an orgy cult.
Basically the story is crap. The ultimate “blank slate” fantasy. A human child raised by Martians grows up to have magical mental powers and starts the cult.
Unreadable in two tries (didn’t recognise the title the second attempt). I generally liked Heinlein’s work, but his later stuff is obsessed with his vision of a future society where everybody ruts like rabbits but it’s OK, because they all truly love one another, nobody gets rejected (there are no ugly people), and there’s never any of that nasty sexual jealousy that tends to complicate real life. It’s silly, boring, and not at all titillating.
It’s the source of that silly neologism, “grok”, that you see used by ex-hippies. It means, to understand something in a uniquely Martian way. Whenever I see it used in writing, I know that the author actually read the book all the way through, and took it seriously, so I can’t take him seriously.
