We had the same agent- Barry Katz- and we worked his room in NYC (The oddly named Boston Comedy Club) pretty often.
I found him to be an arrogant asshole, but I come across that way too, so maybe it’s a hazard of the trade.
I never found him to be particularly funny as a comedian, but he had confidence in spades and charisma with an audience and that allowed him to sell average material as if it were genius.
This looks- to me- to be a case of get us an influential black to stop the bleeding. This is like bringing in Mr.Wolf when you’ve got bodies in the trunk.
Half the jokes were his, but clearly some of them were written by a third party and the idea that Jews in Hollywood are like blacks in Ferguson is most definitely not his. And it’s not funny because it’s not true.
The line about niggers putting their (gold) chains back on was deeply sardonic, but I don’t think it was meant to come across that way.
Look, he had a complicated past when his show went off the rails and he did his own version of the Kanye awakening. He was seriously black-listed after that. That he was allowed back in afterwards seems to be more about his utility than his talent and the amount of money he got from Netflix for his specials indicates something of a quid pro quo, not an investment with a great return. This is- of course- nothing but conjecture, but I tend to judge books by their covers.

The very essence of real comedy is truth, that’s why so many of those lines fell flat despite his panache.
