The US outbreak of avian influenza or bird flu is now the worst on record, with 50.54 million birds culled, US Department of Agriculture data showed on Thursday.
Earlier this week, the outbreak at a commercial turkey farm in South Dakota resulted in tens of thousands of birds being culled to avoid spreading. This was enough to top the previous record of 50.5 million birds that died in the 2015 avian-flu outbreak.

We cautioned at the start of this month of the “possibility of additional outbreaks” and noted ahead of Thanksgiving that supermarket egg prices were hyperinflating because a large swath of the nation’s egg-laying hens was wiped out.
“The virus has mostly impacted turkey and egg operations, sending prices to all-time highs and contributing to soaring food inflation. While the spread slowed during the warmer months, it continued to fester and now risks further spread as cooling temperatures prompt more birds to migrate,” Bloomberg said.
The outbreak began in February and has so far infected flocks of poultry and non-poultry birds across 46 states.
“Wild birds continue to spread HPAI throughout the country as they migrate, so preventing contact between domestic flocks and wild birds is critical to protecting US poultry,” Rosemary Sifford, the USDA’s chief veterinary officer, said.
Some experts have warned the highly pathogenic bird flu could easily continue spreading into 2023 and devastate even more commercial farms. This may only suggest egg prices are heading higher.

Ever notice how in articles like this, they say things like “experts have warned” and people accept it without question?
But let one of us say something like that, and it’s a conspiracy theory.
Like those who had fish in “Airplane.”
We’ve been raising poultry for 15 years, not sure if that makes me an expert, but it definitely provides me with enough experience to be able to address the claims the experts make. The problem isn’t some random avian flu, it’s keeping a half million birds confined in a single production facility, living in conditions where they never see the light of day or feel a fresh breeze, where the feed they eat is half wood pulp and silica and the the remainder is saturated with glyphosate. And then people expect to pay a dollar a pound for it at the grocery store. You would have to try pretty hard to do a more miserable job of raising animals than the one set up by the experts.
I have a chicken decade under my belt. Sometimes when I’m in my three section coop (current population 22) doing chores, feeding them some fresh kale, rape, collard greens I grow just for them or collecting the daily rent…I lecture the girls on the fact they live in a CHICKEN PALACE!
Mother cluckers take me for granted…I can tell.
Experts warned almost like they knew and things are pre-planned, making them right and appear to be experts.
My favorite line is “experts are baffled”….I laugh my ASS off every time!!!

The poultry farmers in my neck of Florida are not having any issues with their birds and the eggs are well-stocked at the farmer’s markets.
Best of all they are running well under 45 cents an egg unlike the fucken supermarkets.
Same for the cattle ranchers. $2/lbs for a half side of beef for mid-yield grade.
Most of em will do the slaughter/processing on-site as well. They will charge you less if you are helping with the processing.
Best thing you can do is help out neighbors that produce. Do some coyote/ hog eradication to barter as well. Farmers and ranchers love hearing that suppressed crack of a rifle shot culling predators and crop killers.

Our feeder requires a refill every 5-6 days, there are 8-10 Mourning Doves under it off and on all day and usually 2-3 birds in the nearby bath. And crows galore. Painted Buntings return every April.
In the spring we ground cleared around a half acre next to the rear marsh. The next morning, we had around 1,000 robins feasting on worm salad.
Just another way to restrict the food supply. It is all about seeing your reaction to tyranny, and how much you will put up with….
