Flight Cancellations Surpass 2,000 As “Once-In-A-Generation” Winter Storm Batters US

This once in a generation weather has ruined our family Christmas. We were supposed to fly to Colorado today for a six day vacation seeing my oldest son, seeing his new home, going to Vail so my sons could snowboard, going to Estes Park and doing the Shining house tour, and enjoying family together again. Flight cancelled, with no other flights until Christmas day. Oh well. We will make the best of it.

Update (1613ET):

A massive winter storm is disrupting air travel across the country.

Flight tracking website FlightAware reports nearly 2,200 flights were canceled by 4 pm EST on Thursday, and delays of flights within, into, or out of the US were around 6,300.

Already, airlines have canceled 1,600 flights for Friday.

FlightAware’s misery map shows flight delays and cancelations are widespread as the “once-in-a-generation” winter storm traverses the country.

*   *   *

A powerful winter storm and cold blast will wreak havoc across the central and eastern US through the weekend and bring what the National Weather Service calls a “once-in-a-generation type event.”

More than 100 million people across the US are under winter weather alerts which extend across 37 states, dipping as far south as Texas.

NWS said heavy snowfall, strong winds, and dangerously cold temperatures would affect areas from the northern Great Basin region through the Plains, Upper Midwest, Great Lakes, and the northern/central Appalachians starting today and lasting through the weekend.

“At the forefront of the impressive weather pattern is a dangerous and record-breaking cold air mass in the wake of a strong arctic cold front diving southward across the southern Plains today and eastward into the Ohio/Tennessee Valleys by tonight,” the weather agency said.

“Behind the front, temperatures across the central High Plains have already plummeted 50 degrees F in just a few hours, with widespread subzero readings extending throughout much of the central/northern Plains and northern Rockies/Great Basin … these temperatures combined with sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph and higher wind gusts of up to 60 mph will continue to lead to wind chills as low as minus 40 degrees across a large swath of the Intermountain West and northern/central Plains, with more localized areas of minus 50 to minus 70 possible through the end of the week,” it continued.

The weather service’s office in Cheyenne, Wyoming, reported a stunning 56-degree temperature drop in 6 hours overnight as the Arctic blast swept across the central US.

Ryan Maue, a private meteorologist, tweeted a weather model showing the massive cold blast pouring down into the Lower 48.

The storm is expected to rapidly intensify by Thursday evening into Friday and become what meteorologists call a “bomb cyclone.”

“This is a case in which snow totals may not tell the whole story. Even small snow amounts, when combined with very strong wind gusts and plummeting temperatures, can cause poor visibility and slick spots on roads. The sudden arrival of these conditions can increase the danger,” the weather service explained.

On Friday, the storm will pass through the Great Lakes and produce accumulating snow across much of the Midwest. Some areas in Michigan could expect more than a foot of snow by tomorrow, making travel a nightmare ahead of the Christmas holiday.

Dakotas, Montana, Minnesota, Iowa, Indiana, and Michigan all have blizzard warnings where the storm peaks Thursday into Friday. Major cities such as Chicago, Kansas City, St Louis, Twin Cities, and Detroit are under winter storm warnings.

As for the Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast, heavy rain is expected through Friday. However, New England will get a shot of snow Friday night into early Saturday.

Severe winter weather will cause travel pains for millions of travelers over the next 48 hours. As of Thursday morning, more than 1,100 flights were canceled across the US, according to the flight tracking site FlightAware. Several US airlines offered travel waivers before the storm’s arrival.

The Arctic air will stick around for the weekend, making this the coldest Christmas in four decades across the country.

And it was only this summer that climate alarmists and progressive mainstream media were pushing stories about how the Earth would burn without government intervention. Someone tell these delusional folks that climate change has been happening for hundreds of millions of years. Also, they should be reminded that El Nino and La Nina weather patterns are naturally occurring — not influenced by humans.

That’s global warming for ‘ya. Here in Ecuador I’ll have to shovel 18 inches of sunshine and brave a wind chill factor in the low to mid ’70’s.

That’s pretty cool for the first full day of summer, isn’t it?

We got snow flurries in Texas today. Very cold; sitting by the fire now.

-15 last night in Denver. 3″ of snow.
about -2 now. Denver ALWAYS has cold in late December.
It will be 50’s next week. I ski all the time when it’s 0 degrees.
Like the Norwegians say, “There is no cold weather, just underdressed people.”

But airlines pussing out is bullshit.
Planes and airports are built for any weather.

Don’t forget — the airlines have loads and loads of pilots and flight attendants (and, likely, others) out of work who’ve either gotten the jab and died or got sick — or got fired for refusing the jab …

Just like the medical profession … our local doctors report about 1/3 of their folks aren’t working — same reasons …

I am in East Texas, Abi, but it’s ass-bitin’ cold here too; we had flurries earlier today as well. I just went outside to see what it was like and it’s subarctic. It’s almost like New Hampshire this time of year (ha!). I don’t know how they do it up there.

Anyway, you take care of your folks. I know what it’s like to have that glue come apart, and you should do everything you can to make sure that doesn’t happen. CONVID and “science” took my father from me before his time, and it almost destroyed what family I have left now. There is nothing worse than feeling impotent because you could not “save” your loved one, even if I know I did all I could. I would spare you these terrible emotions.

Have a Merry Christmas and stay warm up there.

Abigail Adams

Captain O, I am so sorry to hear about your father. That’s really hard to bear, especially around the holidays. Thank you for your sweet message. My dad is the most stubborn man on the planet, so I really have to get after him to make sure he doesn’t get worse. He thinks nothing can kill him. Anyway, it will be hard to lose him when the time comes. He reminds me of Flea, actually – miss him too.

I hope you are filled with lots of love and peace this Christmas. Take care of yourself.

Merry Christmas.

Got a blind friend who is planning on flying out of Milwaukee tomorrow headed to Atlanta. He’s never flown during the holidays. 2F for the high tomorrow snow and heavy wind and serious cold overnight. I’m thinking he’s going to be getting to know the airport really well. He’s been overly sheltered his whole life, so this will be a good learning experience for him. He just started a new job up there and for some reason is cramming in a trip over the holidays.

Looking forward to my annual dip in the pool on Christmas day. May do it Christmas eve as the wind chills in the morning will be well below zero. Once had snow on the deck surrounding the pool. Not going to happen this year, but a hell of a lot colder. Wife says I better not have a heart attack or similar as she isn’t going to come save me in that cold water. No jab, so probably ok.

Airlines are overly cautious and will cancel flights to prevent planes/crew getting stranded (it is not about the passengers). It costs a lot of money to put crews up in hotels for weather delays and this time of year, rooms are hard to find.

If they keep their assets in warmer areas, they can still operate and generate some profit.

Lived/worked in Denver for several years and would fly out on biz ~ 2x/month. I always scheduled winter departures for noon or later so if there was a departing storm the sunny, blue skies would help chase off the ice and hopefully make takeoffs a little safer. But the first time we were on a plane that had to go to the de-icing area it was of concern. Aircraft ventilation sucked in faint smell of ethylene glycol-yuk. Then runway delays required the pilot to re-visit the de-icing operation for another shot of antifreeze. Finally took off and luckily stayed in the air.

A few years later there was a fatal crash on take-off; a guy I knew was on that plane and was not among the survivors.

All of this has been predicted — at first, generally, that this is going to be a real kick of a winter in the US … and, then, much more specifically this week …

Every year, the socialist mentally defective snowflake generation of failure-based fake news has to panic over two snowflakes. I live close enough to O’Hare to get serial numbers off the engines on the planes as they pass. So far, no need to shovel anything.

Now if you want real winters, the 1970s and the first few years of the 1980s when the Great Lakes froze over and the car ferries would get stuck in the ice. A time when everything stopped for days. Today’s snowflake generation of mass failure would have to suicide themselves because they lack the mental fortitude, never mind the physical fortitude, to deal with several feet of snow on the ground. An FWD with a Snowgo coming down the road removing snow would cause them to run away and hide under mommy’s old couch in the basement.

The truth over the shutdowns is the snowflake generation can’t function unless it is 70 degrees, and the sun is out. Even then, they are being pushed to the extreme limits of their abilities. Now combine that with the fact that the old-school airline crews are not working because they stayed home and retired rather than get injected with death drugs.

Stucky

At 9AM this morning it was 52 degrees. By 3PM it was 22 degrees. A 30 degree drop in 6 hours …. never experienced that before.
