On several of my Russia “go to” sites I’ve been reading comments about a new Russian movie, “Best In Hell”. Commenters are pretty much unanimously going apeshit giddy calling in the best damned war movie ever made. I watched it. I agree 100%!! It’s friggin awesome. This is no Hollywood rah-rah bullshit fakery. There’s only one scene in this movie using special effects. Everything else is real; real tanks, real bullets, real explosions, real destroyed buildings.
Below is the trailer, and the movie (the English version with subtitles.) Also included is a brief writeup. Finally, an excellent review of the movie whereby the reviewer gives several things to watch out for which might be easy to miss. Once again, this is a damned fine movie!!

ABOUT THE MOVIE
Currently directly involved in the Russian invasion of Ukraine, The Wagner Group funded a feature length war film that recreates an actual battle …written by Aleksey Nagin – a Russian commander of one of the the Wagner Group’s assault detachments.
The intense war film attempts to provide a realistic portrayal of the brutal realities of the ongoing war. An actual battle that occurred in the Ukrainian city of Mariupol is recreated in the film over the course of its 107 minutes.
The film’s exploration of the human cost of war and the psychological toll it takes on soldiers is admittedly powerful and beautifully shot. The irony however lies in its politics.
Neither side is dehumanised or deliberately antagonised over the course of the film, which even though comes as a pleasant surprise, is almost laughably ironic.
Thanks! When I saw the title, “Best in Hell”, I assumed it was about John McCain.
I assume McCain is there, not sure he’s the best. That may be part of his hell, not being the best.
Wouldn’t that tittle be “Worst” or “Biggest” Bastard In Hell?
I was looking for a war picture to watch but, it was too soon to see ‘Where Eagles Dare’ or ‘Kelly’s Heroes’ so, I’ll give this one a whirl.
Btw, if you haven’t seen ‘T-34’, another Russian war picture, it is quite good too.
Fury
Platoon
Enemy At The Gates
Run Silent, Run Deep
The Longest Day
All Quiet On The Western Front
The Red Badge of Courage
In no particular order. Feel free to add to the list…
A Bridge Too Far
The Bridge at Remagen
Patton
We Were Soldiers
Full Metal Jacket
Midway (both versions)
Dunkirk
Saving Ryan’s Privates …er…Saving Private Ryan
We Were Soldiers…damned good one!
I’ll add, The Patriot
Also I thoroughly enjoyed Inglorious Bastards
“The Thin Red Line.”
Just watched it. Great movie! Good find Stuck.
Might be a good movie (entertaining see Desmett) but it’s propaganda nonetheless. Also for people bored with a FAKE GLOBAL PANDEMIC.
If it goes on they will start showing’real’ war scenes just like the 911 war. People love reality tv especially violent ones. All those patriotic movies prepping us for 911 too. I never watched tv, except for movies, but was glued to those scenes. Not that the fighting is fake, just the wars.
Learned my lesson finally.
This YouTube channel did an excellent job capturing the horrors of war. It’s from a German soldiers war diary on the ostfront during wwII. Very eye opening. There’s 41 episodes. It doesn’t get any more realistic unless you’re there.

You could watch all the videos coming out of the Donbass region….THAT was a real deal…you could see the dead civilians in the streets, the destroyed buildings, the dead and wounded and dying, the guts laying on the sidewalk and the weeping and moaning children and get a much better sense of the joys of war.
Obama, Clinton, and all the rest of the ghouls, along with Biden and Victoria Nuland and her ‘fuck the EU’ statement started this ghastly ball rolling eight years ago and it continues to grow with every passing day. The terror in the streets of Kiev, the massacres in Odeassa, the raped and murdered and torched pregnant women killed by the neo-Ukranian nazis, all there if one wants to take the time to actually do some research instead of opening mouths to swallow the propaganda pablum and lies. Start your search with Victoria Nuland….then fall down the rabbithole of evil…created by our ‘so-called leaders…
Thanks Stuck!!
better giddy than gitty…
Yes, what NATO will face if stupid enough to try
Might be good but it is exactly what we do not need at the moment. How about a good movie about that thing called PEACE that we we have forgotten all about. What happened to the peace rallies?
Wrong, Snowflake! Being aware of the horrors of war is exactly what is needed BEFORE going to war.
OK, Snowflake, just for you …. here is the trailer for “The Day After Peace”. Hope it calms your jittery emotions.
Looks good, I’ll watch it this week. Thanks!
Make sure you watch the one that Stucky links as there are several full length versions of that movie on YouTube. The one Stuck links has the English subtitles. (Good luck reading them — the scenes move so fast it is hard to keep up!)
So which of the three countries: Russia, Ukraine, and the United States of America has a “real” president?
I’ll go with Door #R
Send the sons of all the politicians to the front lines and wait for a negotiated peace. Should take about 45 seconds.
Send the daughters and the children of the rich. PS: I was USAF so why didn’t they just drop a bomb just before sunrise on each of the four buildings and then just assault the 9 story one?
Since I went streaming, I have watched a lot of foreign films and mini-dramas. I will agree Russia makes some damn good movies and shows. At first I looked for dubbed movies, but eventually got use to sub-tittles. Hollywood is boring, stale and relies to much on special effects. The ones I don’t care for are the French ones, always trying to be to “artsie”. I find it interesting to find out what other nations think of the world, and of the US.
Thanks Stuck, this is good. I have a much better understanding of modern warfare.
My take too. Everything has changed with drones. Fire a few mortar rounds, or lob some artillery shells, and they home in on you very quickly.
Shoot and scoot is the order of the day.
Thanks…. watched it, enjoyed it. As a military veteran, I found the action quite realistic… only negative (although realistic in war) is all the foul language and the slightly distorted translations from Russian to English– rare was the radio reply, ‘copy,’ and absent was the reply, ‘roger.’
Wow. Trailer is riveting. I will watch it later. Thank you.
Alex, I’ll take “things Joseph Goebbels would produce” for 200. The timing could not be more Nazi like.
I have watched about 20 minutes of this film and so far a LOT of disappointment. My question was, has it been filmed by an illiterate HS teen using his allowance money?? Has the person filming this never seen what a great murkican war flic is like and how they portray a real war?? sigh
So far, there hasn’t been ANY heart pounding patriot type of music piped out in soul stirring levels. There has been no introduction of the hero archetype or baddie. There has been zero slow-mo walking with massive fireballs in the background. A lame russian tank fires a few rounds into a building and then gets blown up… Wheres the run’n gun head to head tank battles?? They neeeeed aaaanold in there to show them how its done, because I doubt they could afford tom cruise.
Sad, very sad, just a bunch of guys pretending to be soldiers. Can’t see anything real about this film.
The cockpit and aircraft views looked good; wish there had been more and shown to be effective (the A-10 sure is).
Looks like 3 people, so far, are missing the sarcasm gene.
Hoping for more
I need to work on being less subtle I guess
