I was having a conversation with a neighbor who, until recently, flew a tattered and sun-bleached Ukrainian flag proudly in front his house. I don’t recall ever seeing an American flag flying from his porch, but then they’re becoming a rare sight these days unless it’s at half-mast above the post office due to an illegal immigrant running down a sidewalk full of other illegal immigrants not far from our previous border with Mexico, but I digress. I inquired as to what happened to his flag and he just grumbled about a lack of commitment and went back indoors with a sour look on his face.
It got me to thinking about all the times over the course of the past year or so when everyone seemed so confident that Zelensky and company was poised to roll into Moscow, or repel the invaders from Mariupol, or retake Crimea, or at least counter-offensive their asses from Bakhmut/Artemovsk. I possess the memory of a dog who has been given a bone in the past and upon seeing or hearing any prompt connected to that moment in time, recall everything in detail.
I haven’t forgotten about the Molotov chucking Grannies or the Ghost of Kiev or any of the other various and sundry fairytales spun by the Global Media Corps. From Putin’s rapidly developing cancers, to his depleted munitions stores, to the heroics of the salt mine Nazis or the collapse of the Russian ruble, it all comes back to me whenever some Brand New Thing comes down the pike that tries to whitewash the last failed prognostication gone asunder.
I feel sorry for my neighbor. I don’t think he’s a bad guy, I just don’t think he does a whole lot of research into his cause du jour. Maybe he knows a lot about Ukraine, but I wouldn’t bet on it. More than likely he just went with the same flow that had him mask up for almost two years whenever he took his dog for a walk, or that had him drive that wooden stake into the front lawn with that Black Lives Matter sign that disappeared under the snowbanks of two years ago, never to return. In the old days you’d call him faddish.
But he didn’t get there alone. He was steered into his lane by experts. Herds of them, battalions and regiments, divisions and corps of geniuses with more degrees than common sense who assured and promised, guaranteed and divined outcomes that never came to fruition or which had already failed. For some reason I decided to go back and see what some of these pundits had to say as recently as a year ago to just to make sure I wasn’t fooling myself.
Sadly, I was not. And like I am wont to do, whenever I read piece that gets mainstream coverage despite being horribly wrong, I always make sure to check out the physiognomy of the author to confirm my suspicions and as is always the case, it tells a story only your eyes can hear.

I love the line “but we can’t give up now or all those other deaths (including my son’s – sometimes) would have been in vain.” How often have we heard that drivel? Gets used even in the war on drugs. As if 10,000,000 deaths would somehow NOT have been in vain, etc.
The only time I think that line would apply is if the cause of war is self-defense and/or self-preservation. I can understand how it could be said about the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and Civil War. In those types of wars when morale was low and support started to waver after a string of defeats soldiers would usually keep fighting because of their fallen soldiers.
Remember the Alamo! Remember Goliad! weren’t just calls to honor the soldiers who had fallen. It was a warning of what would happen if the Texans had lost at San Jacinto – Santa Ana would have killed every last man as he had done before.

I did not name my two son’s until 2 weeks after each was born. I wanted to be with them a little and feel if the names picked for them were right. Really created a fuss at the hospital. When I was young, I did not serve in the military. I was, however, fascinated by war history and heroism. I developed a very idealized view. I think the things that changed my mind were the story a Vietnam friend told me which drove home other stories I read about Iwo Jima. Specifically, the very graphic depictions of men who could not leave a foxhole to urinate or defecate or they would be killed. No stopping the fighting, just go in your pants. My Vietnam vet friend told me a similar story from his experience. It may seem silly to those reading this, but the horrors of war were driven home when I read and heard these stories. When I finally read Teddy Roosevelt’s book and his glorious depictions of the war, I recognized that he just sounded crazy to revel in the destruction of human lives. I grew to no longer ‘wish’ that I had served in a war. I am thankful I did not.
I have disdain for those who fly a Ukrainian flag in support of that war. Personally, I don’t even fly my US flag anymore. I flew it at half staff for several years, but no one except my family noticed. Things have to change before I’ll fly it at all again.

Today on YouTube there was an ad for some drug for transsexuals. Was that because I’m in Minneapolis? I guarantee I was not searching for “drugs for trannies”. I was out about town this morning (for once) and saw a couple of trannies just today. One he-she and one she-he. Both laughably implausible. I do, however, think that they target particular youtube channels for specific ads, and not because they think the viewership is interested. In particular, I have seen numerous Homosex related ads on youtube channels that are religious in nature, and I only watch videos from conservative (traditional) Christians … NOT the kind who place tolerance of everything, including sin, as the highest virtue.
In other words, YouTube deliberately places ads relating to perversion on videos from traditional Christians. Forget about targeting ads for increased revenue, they’re willing to forego that revenue, and so are the advertisers. They piss in our faces because it pleases them to do so.
