I remember when blues used to run the Chesapeake Bay. We’d catch a bunch of Spot and Croaker (bait) near the James River Bridge, then head for the Bay. Blues were a ton of fun to catch (great fighters) but we never found them much for table fare. Looks like you had fun.
The must be eaten or smoked immediately.
I bleed them and fillet and skin them which
makes them delicious.. Albies are completely inedible
but terrific fighters. Bonito is so good we eat it raw
as sushi.

Night fishing for striper…. We used to fish striper along the Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel. Lights from the bridge cast a shadow line in the water, and striper would be packed like cordwood in the dark, waiting to ambush anything that swam by in the light. But that was then…..

The old joke about cooking bluefish was to start with a cedar plank, and put a fresh cowpie on that. Then put the bluefish on that and garnish with lemon juice and a bunch of vegetables. Bake at 350 for a while, then eat the cedar plank.

lure. I have had the best luck with a Hopkins “Smoothy”
or a “Deadly Dick”
People say they will bite anything that moves but I have been doing this for 43 years and that is horseshit. They feed on
what is in the water at that time. Put on a lure that looks like what
they are eating. And depending on the currents and tides, a slow retrieve is FAR more effective than the “Reel as fast as you can” rule.
Don’t you wish you had about a dozen live Spot for bait? That’ll snag you a big blue. PS… I love the purists and aficionados who throw an antique lure at blues.

Years back, 20-pound blues were not uncommon in the Chesapeake Bay. 40, 50, and 60 pound stripers were not uncommon either. Flounder were plentiful, along with sheepshead and many other species. Catching big spot and croaker in the lower James River was like catching bluegill in the kiddie pond. Somewhere around here are pictures of my Mom holding croaker that reached from her knee to the ground. Those days are gone. Not because of gullible warming or sealevel rise; commercial fishers are netting all the menhaden. The food source is gone.

When I first started surf fishing in 1980
on Nantucket Island, you could catch so many
it was almost a joke. And if someone caught a striper, it would be front page news in the paper. Old time fishermen there said
catching stripers was nothing and catching a bluefish was rare.
The bluefish fishery has been declining for many years as the striper fishery has become abundant. I think there is a correlation. That said, I caught the first HUGE bluefish I’ve
caught from shore in 20 years. 34 inches long and every bit of 18-20 lbs. Most of them are between 4 and 8 lbs. for the last 20 years for me.
Further up the coast, striper have been protected… for many years.
Bluefish and striper (rock fish) are NOT teeter-totter. Price them at the seafood shops.
I’m talking about when one is abundant the other is not.
