Change, like death, prompts psychological turmoil. Intellectually, most of us grasp that change is ceaseless, just as most of us realize we’re going to die. Emotionally, however, few embrace the former or accept the latter.

Humanity is in the throes of a change that is reversing a centuries-long trend. Power, in all of its aspects, is migrating downward. This epochal reversal has received scant intellectual recognition. Psychologically, it manifests as panic among the powerful and as newfound assertiveness among the formerly less powerful. It will take decades, perhaps centuries, to fully play out.

America has seen many dangerous and tough times from Her earliest beginnings, and still She stands, perhaps a bit tarnished and worse for wear, but until recently She always remained with our republic intact, regardless of the changes wrought upon Her by the Civil War, two world wars and the civil unrest and upheaval of the anti-war 1960s era. Our republic no longer stands for all practical intents and purposes, and the same government policies and societal mores that have made its demise a reality, after decades of decline and decay and turning away from our better angels, are acting and promising to change America into something unrecognizable as America, no matter what standing law reads or what new “laws” are passed tomorrow.

Stephen Byren writes, correctly, that the purpose of the Russian offensive towards Kharkiv is to disintegrate the Ukrainian army:

To my mind, Russia’s objective is to force Ukraine’s army to chase after invading Russian units. The idea is to cause heavy casualties on the Ukrainian side and, if all goes according to plan, either to split Ukraine’s army into two, or disintegrate it altogether.In such a manner the idea is not just to take territory but to destroy Ukraine’s ability to resist. There are many indicators that Russia is having success in the ongoing operation.

In separate remarks at two different events on Friday, Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito issued warnings about the state of affairs in America today, including support for freedom of speech “declining dangerously” and the nation’s capital becoming a “hideous” place where cancel culture runs rampant.

Justice Thomas spoke at a conference of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit in Point Clear, Alabama, while Justice Alito delivered a commencement address at the Franciscan University of Steubenville, a Catholic college in Ohio, with both of the conservative-minded judges painting a dark picture—while encouraging action and offering hope.

At the Alabama event, Justice Thomas was asked to comment by the moderator—U.S. District Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle—about what it’s like to work “in a world that seems meanspirited.”

Former CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield provided a chilling commentary on the latest bird flu outbreak in a recent interview with NewsNation, suggesting that what we are seeing may not be due to a virus found in the natural environment but one augmented by human manipulation in a biolab.

In other words, this could be Covid 2.0, only worse, with a genetically modified pathogen tailored to spread specifically among humans.

Redfield told NewsNation’s Elizabeth Vargas that he’s worried about bird flu, because “Right now, it takes five amino acid changes for it to be effectively infecting humans. That’s a pretty heavy species barrier – but this virus is already in 26 mammal species, as you most recently saw cattle. But in the laboratory, I could make it highly infectious for humans in just months.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin will travel to China later this week to meet his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, the Kremlin has announced. It will be the Russian leader’s first foreign trip of his new presidential term.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Kremlin said that the state visit at the invitation of the Chinese leader is scheduled for May 16 and 17. During the summit, the two leaders “will discuss in detail the entire range of issues of comprehensive partnership and strategic interaction” between Moscow and Beijing, as well as determine key directions for the further development of Russian-Chinese ties.

UNC Chapel Hill Trustees Vote To Redirect DEI Money To Campus Safety

The board of trustees of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has unanimously voted to defund diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs and instead use the millions of dollars to boost campus safety.

At a special meeting on Monday morning to discuss budget plans, the board voted to divert the $2.3 million the university invests in DEI programs toward police and other public safety measures. The public university had an operating budget totaling more than $4 billion in the previous fiscal year.

“I think that DEI, in a lot of people’s mind, is divisiveness, exclusion, and indoctrination,” Marty Kotis, vice chair of the board’s budget and finance committee, said during Monday’s meeting. “We need more unity and togetherness, more dialogue, more diversity of thought.”

Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh spoke at a judicial conference for the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which hears appeals from Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Justice Kavanaugh said that unpopular rulings tend to become the fabric of constitutional law, pointing to the unpopular decision at the time in Brown v. Board of Education, which held that separating children by race in schools is unconstitutional. This is often the case, but the nation has become so polarized that you immediately see today, when a Judge rules, they turn to who appointed him to the bench. The presumption is that they rule not according to the Constitution but according to the political party that they are affiliated with.
