The Turnaround

Guest Post by Jim Kunstler

At yesterday’s Thanksgiving table, fifteen adults present, there was not one word uttered about impeachment, Russia, Ukraine, and, most notably, a certain Golden Golem of Greatness, whose arrival at the center of American life three years ago kicked off a political hysteria not witnessed across this land since southern “fire eaters” lay siege to Fort Sumter.

Only 3 ways to stop Trump 2020

Guest Post by Thaisleeze

Living on the opposite side of the world to the USA I am obliged to follow American politics as a stone thrown into the Washington swamp sends ripples that reach this far. With less than a year to go until the next presidential election it is time to assess the current political landscape.

Trump of course is the focus of massive media noise. This must be ignored if a rational analysis is to be produced. 2016 proved that opinion polls must also be ignored. As things stand today Trump holds the following chips in his stack:

Doug Casey on the Destruction of the Dollar

Guest Post by Doug Casey via International Man

Dollar

“Inflation” occurs when the creation of currency outruns the creation of real wealth it can bid for… It isn’t caused by price increases; rather, it causes price increases.

Inflation is not caused by the butcher, the baker, or the auto maker, although they usually get blamed. On the contrary, by producing real wealth, they fight the effects of inflation. Inflation is the work of government alone, since government alone controls the creation of currency.

Unbear-a-ball

Guest Post by The Zman

The weather last weekend was not very good here in Lagos, so I tuned in for some of the football games. I used to watch a lot of college football, but that has waned quite a bit over the last few years. When I consume college football, I’m usually doing something else, so I half listen and pay attention when I hear some excitement. These days, you can rewind the action if you miss something, so this sort of consumption is a lot easier than in the old days. You can watch the highlights in real time.

WE ARE TURKEYS, NOT FARMERS

Guest Post by Bill Bonner

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND – As our friend Nassim Taleb reminds us, there’s a downside to being a turkey. It’s called Thanksgiving.

Every day for 1,000 days, it gets its food. The turkey gets used to it. It feels pretty good about things. Around the feed trough, it is common knowledge that the food “always” comes. And there is no turkey alive who can contradict it.

The more intellectual turkeys spin out theories to explain their good fortune. One says it’s because of turkey exceptionalism:

“The food always comes because we’re turkeys, not starlings or pigeons. We are special. We don’t have to peck around on the ground trying to find crumbs or scratch in the dirt to find worms. We’re a superior bird; we have access to unlimited food.”

Thanksgiving Is a Unified National Myth

Guest Post by Bill Bonner

Thanksgiving was declared a national holiday in 1941 when FDR signed a bill officially establishing the fourth Thursday of November as Thanksgiving Day. Through the Depression and then World War II, Thanksgiving grew in importance.

In a country where roots meant almost nothing, where people were ready to pick up and move at the drop of a hat, where there were huge differences in what people thought and how they lived, Thanksgiving served to provide a unified national myth… most popularly expressed in Norman Rockwell’s Thanksgiving illustration for The Saturday Evening Post in 1943.

The original Thanksgiving celebration took place in Massachusetts in 1621. It was hosted by a dour bunch of Puritans, who probably wouldn’t have been able to enjoy a good dinner if their lives depended on it. But they certainly had a lot to be thankful for.

Thanksgiving for Dummies…Sorry, I Mean College Professors

Thanksgiving for Dummies...Sorry, I Mean College Professors

As every contemporary school child knows, the first Thanksgiving took place in 1621, when our Pilgrim forefathers took a break from slaughtering Indigenous Peoples to invite them to dinner and infect them with smallpox, before embarking on their mission to fry the planet so that the world would end on Jan. 22, 2031. Consider this description of the Pilgrims’ treatment of the Indigenous Peoples:
