What Accounts for Putin’s Assertiveness on Ukraine?

Via Anti War

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s well choreographed decision yesterday to recognize the independence of the pro-Russian Ukrainian provinces of Donetsk and Luhansk points to two key realities: (1) Putin despairs of persuading U.S. allies, Germany and France, to press Ukraine to honor its commitments under the Minsk accords that provide for regional autonomy as well as a ceasefire; and (2) Putin feels assured of very strong backing from China (as long as he is not stupid enough to invade Ukraine).

What about this China factor? Why do Western pundits/savants pay so little heed to this game-changer? It should not require my half-century of studying/reporting on Russia-China relations to notice that China and Russia have never been so strategically close as now. Putin and Xi have done their part to demonstrate that. Why cannot most Western pundits and savants see it and recognize the implications?

Stop Talking About Ukraine, Republicans!

Stop Talking About Ukraine, Republicans!

Amid the media’s 24/7 UKRAINE UPDATES, perhaps some enterprising journalist could write an article explaining how our esteem for that country’s borders benefits a single American — other than President Joe Biden.

Our own border has become a transmission belt for the third world, bringing in rapists, murderers, future welfare recipients and left-wing activists. The Democratic Party’s brilliant policy of defunding the police and emptying the prisons has, oddly enough, led to a breathtaking surge in violent crime. Our schools have been taken over by lunatics who teach white kids that they are evil — and probably transsexual. Inflation has hit a 40-year high.

By all Measures the US Has the World’s Most Incompetent Government and the Worst Media

US President Biden claims Russian troops continue “encircling Ukraine” even as Moscow says they are withdrawing.

The Russian soldiers were never there for the purpose of invading Ukraine. They were in Belarus as part of a training exercise akin to the ones NATO continually conducts on Russia’s borders.  The Troops in Ukraine were there to intercede if Ukraine invaded the Donbass republics.

The accusation of a Russian invasion was an obvious lie from the beginning.  The purpose of the lie was to scare Europeans about Russia in order to keep them on the US reservation.

According to various British tabloids, the invasion of Ukraine is expected to begin any minute now.

It was actually officially due to start yesterday, but Russia missed their deadline. Krasnaya Vesna was sarcastically live-blogging the blitzkrieg.

Has Putin Won Round One in Ukraine?

Has Putin Won Round One in Ukraine?

When NBC’s Lester Holt asked President Joe Biden what might prompt him to send U.S. troops to rescue Americans fleeing Ukraine, Biden replied: “There’s not. That’s a world war when Americans and Russia start shooting at one another.”

“It’s not like we’re dealing with a terrorist organization. We’re dealing with one of the largest armies in the world. … Things could go crazy quickly.”

Biden was saying Americans are not going to fight Russians in Ukraine, even to protect or extract imperiled U.S. troops, diplomats or citizens.

Speaking last week on the Senate floor, Sen. Ted Cruz echoed Biden: “I want to be clear and unequivocal. … Under no circumstances should we send our sons and daughters to die to defend Ukraine from Russia.”
