At least Baby Boomers are consistent. They have been consistently delusional about their finances, use of debt to keep up with the Jones’, belief in home price increases funding their retirement, and reliance on the Federal government to provide for their old age. It seems they are just as delusional about getting old. It seems they haven’t developed mechanisms to cope with their delusional stupidity and vacuous dimwittedness. I’m all choked up worrying about their futures.
Boomers are getting old. They just won’t admit it.
BILL WARD

Fred Hundt grew up in 1960s San Francisco, played in a loud band and tried a little bit of everything on the drug front. “I’m kind of a poster child of the ’60s,” he said.
Now he’s a poster adult for baby boomers, whose embrace of a “sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll” lifestyle is coming home to roost as they enter what are supposed to be their golden years.
“I certainly have hearing loss,” admits Hundt, a recovering alcoholic. “And I have friends who have died because of drugs and others who have struggled with hepatitis C and had liver transplants.”
Hearing problems and the threat of hepatitis C and attendant liver complications are perhaps the largest looming problems for the 76 million baby boomers. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has urged that all boomers get tested for hepatitis C.
But there is some good news for a generation long regarded as hedonistic: Boomers smoke and drink less than their predecessors, and most sexually transmitted diseases they might have incurred in the “free love” era are treatable.
Actually, the biggest hazard for this fiercely youth-obsessed generation might be psychological, said Dr. Robert Kane, director of the University of Minnesota’s Center for Aging.
“What really scares the hell out of me is that they’re totally unprepared for old age,” he said. In Kane’s view, this boomer behavior is a flashback, if you will, to their youth. “I would describe them as people who live for the moment. They are in a huge state of denial and haven’t adopted the mechanisms to cope.”
The rate of hearing problems for 65-year-olds has remained steady for decades at 11 percent, Kane said. But a recent Better Hearing Institute study found that about 15 percent of Americans ages 46 to 64 already have hearing problems. On top of that, Kane said, “A large number of people are just not aware that they have hearing loss.”
And they needn’t have played in a loud band to have been afflicted in an era in which concerts featured huge stacks of loudspeakers blasting away at the audience.
But even those who eschewed such concerts are susceptible to hearing loss, often in the form of tinnitus or ringing sensations in a quiet room.
“Exposure to loud noise at any time during life can damage the ear,” said Dr. Philip Hagen, medical director of the Mayo Clinic’s EmbodyHealth.
While Kane and Hagen encouraged all boomers to get hearing tests, the CDC issued an even stronger recommendation in August: “A one-time blood test for hepatitis C should be on every baby boomer’s medical checklist,” director Thomas Frieden said.
The CDC estimates that 3.5 million Americans have the virus and that blanket boomer testing could uncover 800,000 victims and prevent 120,000 deaths. The disease, a viral infection of the liver, can stay dormant for decades.
“Most people with hepatitis C don’t know they’ve got it,” Hagen said. “The big issue for boomers was they may have been infected in an era when we weren’t able to test for hepatitis C.
“If you have ever (used) intravenous drugs, you should get it checked at once. If you have engaged in high-risk sexual activity, multiple partners or men having sex with men, you should get checked.”
Other vices haven’t proven as nettlesome, especially since boomers were less inclined to adopt them for life.
Take smoking, in whatever form. The data on marijuana’s health effects are mixed, with some potential for respiratory problems, both doctors said. As for tobacco, “the boomers are sort of the model citizens, down around 20 percent (usage),” Hagen said. For those who smoked and then quit, “after about 10 years the risk of lung cancer and strokes is approaching the normal population’s risk.”
Alcohol and hard drugs took their collective tolls, but more on abusers than casual users. “The young, hard-core alcoholics and drug addicts generally don’t make it to the ages of current boomers,” Kane said.
Still, those who have made it this far might be in luck, especially since two of the major ailments (hearing loss and hepatitis C) have much more effective treatments than ever.
In a very real sense, a generation that adopted the Who’s mantra “hope I die before I get old” simply doesn’t think it has gotten old yet. As Kane put it, “there’s going to be a wakeup call for a whole lot of people.”

For many “boomers”, the chickens came home to roost decades ago. I lost 5 old chums before the age of 40 mostly from drug abuse. Two of these were suicides. Many more were permanently damaged or chronically ill by the age of 35.
Many of the men were drafted into the war in Vietnam and didn’t make it home. Dozens of men who went to my high school and the h.s. in the next district were killed there. Thousands of other Nam vets came home permanently damaged and/or with diseases they didn’t even know they had, like Hep C, which wasn’t even identified until 20 years ago or so. These guys never asked for this. They had their lives stolen from them by THEIR elders, the G.I. generation, to die or be damaged for life in a war fought solely to make life safe for American corporations in another slave labor haven.
I have felt for a long time that my grandparents’ generation (they were born 1907 and 1909 respectively) will turn out to be the longest-lived in history, and that that my parents’ “silent” generation (born in the early 30s) less long-lived, and my own baby boom generation rather short lived.
Just as we have passed Peak OIl (and peak resources in general), we’ve probably passed Peak Lifespans, and every generation out will be shorter lived than the last. My father died this year at 80, with health habits no worse than those of his parents, who lived to see 86 and 88 respectively. I hope my mother lives as long as my grandmother, but I profoundly doubt that most of the boomers will live anywhere near as long as their parents.
“But there is some good news for a generation long regarded as hedonistic: Boomers smoke and drink less than their predecessors, and most sexually transmitted diseases they might have incurred in the “free love” era are treatable.”
This is why I detest do-gooders. You should have just let them smoke, drink, do drugs and fuck themselves to death and lessened the burden on SS and Medicare.
Right on DaveL.
Newflash A For every day I get a day older.. so do you.
Newflash B Admin is a boomer. [born in 1964]
the boomers have been like a bunch of locusts ravaging everything in their path leaving behind epoch and colossal failure and ruin. their hedonistic 1960’s love, peace, and happiness rotted into 1970’s disco, big hair and greed is good in the 1980’s, godknowswhat in the 1990’s, and an insatiable appetite for more, more, more (without paying for it) in the 00’s. boomers began moving up into “leadership” positions in all aspects of society starting in the 1980’s. by their fruits ye shall know them….

I bet he is deaf from going to rock concerts and has Hepatitis C from all his Ivey league orgie plus he is already looking to buy a rascal on go on a two week cruise.

I have? Gee, I must have been taking LSD because I dont remember doing any such things. I never much cared for concerts, definitely didnt like Disco, never haad big hair and think, to this day that Ayn Rand is a commie propagandist [objectivism aka greed] set out to tear down the USA.
But I do have some ringing in my ears.
Have you ever sat under a jet engine at take off power?
I do have one member of my family with hepatitis. My little brother. An X’er. He also is on social security. The government pays him to take xanax because he is bi-polar.

I was in San Francisco during the AIDS plague for that is what it was in the San Francisco. The most basic public health measures were not taken when this disease became identified due to political correctness and the ‘gay’ communities desire to not be identified as the source of the plague. The board of supervisors argued for months whether gay bath houses should be closed.
Misinformation was spread that EVERYONE was at risk and that, since there was no cure, testing was a waste of time. Most of those responsible for this appalling political response to a virus paid with their lives. But not all. Dianne Feinstein, who was mayor during the entire period, stood by and allowed more than 200 people die week after week, after year, until more than 2% of the entire city population was dead from AIDS! Even then it was only when some anti-retroviral drugs were developed that the toll began to drop.
Hepatitis C is the echo of the AIDS years. Like AIDS it will cost many billions to treat. Unlike AIDS it wasn’t preventable by basic public health measures but it was preventable if you had basic common sense. Shooting drugs was crazy to begin with. Even pharmaceutical drugs lose their sterility when they are bought off the street, ground up and prepared for injection with tap water and a spoon! Shooting street drugs was sheer insanity. Sharing a needle madness. Those that only contracted Hepatitis C should consider themselves lucky. The at least got to live for another 25 years before the chicken came home to roost.

Thanks for the w/d tip, ID.
I read more consumer reviews on the Haier washer/dryer combo and decided against it as the reviews are turning overwhelmingly negative- too many machines don’t live even a year.
I have been searching every BUY AMERICAN thread for something suitable, and the problem is that while there are excellent and reasonable products, like the sensibly priced and well-made Frigidaire stacked units that are made in North Carolina (though the co. is owned by Electrolux), they are stackables that ALL need a 220 V connection. I have to have something that can use a 120 V connection, and so I’m now looking at the LG washer/dryer combo. I’ll keeping searching for a while, but I have a feeling I’m going to end up with the LG, sadly.
I’m finding many other excellent American made products, such as the rugged (and beautiful) Metro canister vacuum, for about $300 depending on where you buy it. It is made in New York by the same family that founded the company in 1939. It gets rave ratings from customers. Info at http://www.metrovacworld.com/
Getting old is something we all have to contend with sooner or later, unless our karma involves an early death, which doesn’t seem like a great alternative to me.
I won’t apologize for having lived in a time and in a way that was far freer than today. I’m sure that guy who’s losing his hearing doesn’t regret having lived in San Francisco in the 1960’s. It was a magical time and place, and the possibilities seemed unlimited. So very different than today.
Even Austin was better in a myriad of ways. As Stephen King says,, “The world has moved on.”
The boomers may not be the biggest bunch of savers the world has ever seen, but then we have lived at a time when saving has been punished, and consumption has been rewarded.
If there is a problem with my generation, it is mainly a problem of demographics. Just too many of us were born in the first place, and you can’t really blame anyone for simply being born. If we were a tiny group, then the problems of our coming elderly years wouldn’t be much of any issue.
Today is my birthday. I am 57 years old and rather healthy. I don’t think I’ll ever be much of a burden to the healthcare system, and I’ll manage to feed myself and keep a roof over my head without the assistance of the government dole.
That’s all I can do for you younger folks. Whatever you do or don’t get out of life is mostly up to you, personally, and not anyone or anything else. Life is very challenging. I look forward to the challenges, sobering though they may be. I take some satisfaction in doing what I can to prepare for some rocky times ahead…and if it isn’t pretty, well I can’t help it. I’ll do the best I can.
I worked with a guy who had two openly gay brothers in the bay area. They were wealthy and had all the toys most people lust for. Both died from aids and they werent that old.
More interesting is the thinking that people should live a certain way? What was the life expectancy just a few years back? Personal freedom and the ability to do what you want,or can get away with is the american way. What i see all around is a society of people who dont beleave in God and are just freaked about death.
Both my parents are in the hospital and looking at them slipping away mentally is rough.I think both of them well end up in a home, hopefully together. My dad had mini strokes and my mom already had brain surgery and had five stents put in her leg two days ago..Happy Thanksgiving!
Oh and my parents never drank or smoked and werent heavy. They were like poster children for how to live healthy.
“Hearing problems and the threat of hepatitis C and attendant liver complications are perhaps the largest looming problems for the 76 million baby boomers.”
What about obesity? The most obese generation in history is going to consume every last dollar of Medicare before it collapses. What about cancer, renal failure, heart attacks, liver failure, stokes, diabetic amputations, cirrhosis, and all the rest? Boomers are going to suffer for their lifestyle, they will reap what they’ve sown.
A baby boomer is a person who was born during the demographic post-World War II baby boom between the years 1946 and 1964, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.[1]

Look around. It is called the American lifestyle and I see obesity everywhere and every age group.
Boomers can kiss my Gen-X fat ass.
Boomers let the obesity genie out of the bottle, and it’s spread around the world. They must be so proud of themselves!

I’d care more if it wasn’t so painfully obvious that just as many millenials are equally worthless.
Get those service jobs while you can. Boomers are never going to be able to retire.

The BHBQ Official Baby Boomer Qualifying Exam
The Administrator often shows his dirty end of the Boomer cusp, with his adoration of disco at the expense of gangsta rap…. but the generational metric established by Obi-Wan-Neil-Howe-Bi and the late Strauss, the venerated Boomers of Virtue is quite accurate sociologically and remains one of the few rules on TBP: The Strauss and Howe Rule of Generational Dates.

Meh, my daughter, just 25, has not, sadly, given me a grandchild. But thats all up to her.
Wel, shit, currently I am running a Linux based system and having partitioned the hard drive on my LAPTOP, I can boot into XP or Ubuntu or to some other systems I have loaded onto thumb drives and CDs using a .iso imaging tool. I am fully aware of the TCP IP protocols, have packet sniffers etc installed on this system, for both windows and linux and am quite aware of technology. Rare for someone my age, right?
As for being computer literate I am much more so than my daughter who has an ‘Android’ smart phone. I dont deny the technology but that so many kids, like mine, I worry about the narcisstic nature it is creating.
