QUOTES OF THE DAY

“Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the clouds of war, it is humanity hanging on a cross of iron.”

Dwight D. Eisenhower

“It was possible, no doubt, to imagine a society in which wealth, in the sense of personal possessions and luxuries, should be evenly distributed, while power remained in the hands of a small privileged caste. But in practice such a society could not long remain stable. For if leisure and security were enjoyed by all alike, the great mass of human beings who are normally stupefied by poverty would become literate and would learn to think for themselves; and when once they had done this, they would sooner or later realise that the privileged minority had no function, and they would sweep it away. In the long run, a hierarchical society was only possible on a basis of poverty and ignorance.”

George Orwell, 1984

“Poverty is the parent of revolution and crime.”

Aristotle

“There is always more misery among the lower classes than there is humanity in the higher.”

Victor Hugo, Les Misérables

“If the misery of the poor be caused not by the laws of nature, but by our institutions, great is our sin.”

Charles Darwin, Voyage of the Beagle

“A man thinks that by mouthing hard words he understands hard things. ”

Herman Melville

“History is written by the rich, and so the poor get blamed for everything.”

Jeffrey D. Sachs

“American humorist Kin Hubbard said , “It ain’t no disgrace to be poor, but it might as well be”. The meanest eating or drinking establishment, owned by a man who is himself poor, is very likely to have a sign on its wall asking this cruel question: “If you’re so smart, why ain’t you rich?”

Americans, like human beings everywhere, believe many things that are obviously untrue… Their most destructive untruth is that it is very easy for any American to make money. They will not acknowledge how in fact hard money is to come by, and, therefore, those who have no money blame and blame and blame themselves. This inward blame has been a treasure for the rich and powerful, who have had to do less for their poor, publicly and privately, than any other ruling class since, say, Napoleonic times.

Many novelties have come from America. The most startling of these, a thing without precedent is a mass of undignified poor. They do not love one another because they do not love themselves.”

Kurt Vonnegut, Slaughterhouse-Five

“…the great mass of human beings who are normally stupefied by poverty would become literate and would learn to think for themselves…”

I love Orwell, but I don’t think he believes that lie, even if he told it.

Poverty doesn’t keep one form being curious or literate, intelligence (or lack thereof) does. One can chose poverty and be capable of deep thought, others can live lives of opulence and have not a shred of intelligence.

Money may be the single greatest lie of all time. A convenience? Certainly. Necessary? Hardly. Evil? Absolutely.

Sooo, where are we going with these quotes?

That poverty causes crime? Plenty of rich criminals out there…

That a hierarchical society is somehow unjust or unfair? We have a word for state-enforced “equality”… it’s called “Communism”.

“Every gun that is made… signifies in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.

Much as I like Ike, I think he’s wrong here…

“Personal weapons are what raised mankind out of the mud, and the rifle is the queen of personal weapons.”

“The rifle is a weapon. Let there be no mistake about that. It is a tool of power, and thus dependent completely upon the moral stature of its user. It is equally useful in securing meat for the table, destroying group enemies on the battlefield, and resisting tyranny. In fact, it is the only means of resisting tyranny, since a citizenry armed with rifles simply cannot be tyrannized.”

“The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles.”

— Jeff Cooper, The Art of the Rifle

@HSF “Money may be the single greatest lie of all time. A convenience? Certainly. Necessary? Hardly. ”

Money is not necessary? Maybe if you’re a monk in Tibet, but for the rest of us…of course it is. If, however, you mean in an esoteric sense, such as money as a means of exchange, perhaps so.
