Visualize whirled peas. 🙂
Reminds me of a limerick my Dad used to recite whenever we had peas at dinner:
“I eat my peas with honey,
I’ve done it all my life.
I eat my peas with honey,
‘Cause it sticks them to my knife”.

There once was a country with 800 bases,
spread over the globe in 800 places,
then they started to choke
’cause it made them go broke,
as it blew up in their fooking faces.

800 AMERICAN military “bases” is bullshit.

Does that include nearly 200 US embassy compounds where US Marines are responsible for the internal (the host country is responsible for external) security? This includes “unfriendly” countries such as Russia and China where we have huge embassies and many Marines assigned to guard the embassy’s internal property with the permission of the host country.

Does it include host nation military bases where we have a few military personnel assigned for whatever function? Is that an “American Military Base”?

Well, is it, punk? Get back to me when you have the answer, which will embarrass you.

“The US Military has bases in 63 countries. Brand new military bases have been built since September 11, 2001 in seven countries.

In total, there are 255,065 US military personnel deployed Worldwide.

These facilities include a total of 845,441 different buildings and equipments. The underlying land surface is of the order of 30 million acres. According to Gelman, who examined 2005 official Pentagon data, the US is thought to own a total of 737 bases in foreign lands. Adding to the bases inside U.S. territory, the total land area occupied by US military bases domestically within the US and internationally is of the order of 2,202,735 hectares, which makes the Pentagon one of the largest landowners worldwide (Gelman, J., 2007).”

The Pentagon defines a base site as any geographic location that is owned, leased or possessed by the military.

SSS – well, based on all that, 800 bases seems to be an accurate assessment.

Cost of these overseas bases is around $200 billion a year.

I understand the President can close these on his own command.

President Llpoh would probably dislocate his shoulder in his rush to reach for a pen in order to do just that, if’n he was president.

Who died and left the US king of the world?

How many military bases does the US have in Israel? Zero. Please don’t count the warehouses containing “forward staged” ordnance as a base.

One would think that if the US was really interested in just guaranteeing Israeli security from attack it would have large bases such as exist in S. Korea and Japan.

Israel doesn’t want that. What it wants, and has largely achieved is for the US to pump up it’s own, independent military forces (that never support us in ME military operations), and for the US to either buy off (Jordan, Egypt) or utterly destroy it’s enemies in the region (Syria, Iraq). Whether Iran joins that list remains to be seen. Clearly our wonderful, benevolent, liberal and peaceful ally the Saudis would love to see Iran knocked back a half century, as of course would Israel.

I wonder how many of the volunteers who fought in Iraq understand they were doing it for Israel and not the US?

Holy shit, Llpoh, are you dropping the same acid tablets as Stucky? Do the fucking math your hero Gelman is throwing out. Quoting you, 800 bases (“seems to be an accurate assessment” in your words) in 63 countries is nearly 13 fucking bases per country.

For every “country” that has 1 US base, the other 62 countries have to pick up 12 bases. Is Guam a country? No. It’s owned by the US and has two military installations, Adana Naval Air Station and Andersen AFB. Is Diego Garcia a country? No. It’s owned by Great Britain and plays host to a major US naval installation.

Let’s take it one step farther and look at Gelman’s statement “The Pentagon defines a base site as any geographic location that is owned, leased or possessed by the military. …….” Is that OUR military or theirs.

Example. In 1982-83, I was stationed in El Salvador during the civil war and worked at Ilopango AB along with 2, I repeat 2, other US personnel assigned to support the Salvadoran Air Force, which was headquartered there. It was totally Salvadoran territory. Totally. 3 fucking gringos among about 2,000 Salvadorans.

Does that count as a “US base”? In your mind, Gelman’s mind, and Stucky’s mind, I guess it does. So riddle me that, Llpoh. You and Stucky are WAY out of your expertise on this subject. You’d be best advised to shut up and enjoy your new landscape of Roos.

SSS – the Pentagon defines bases. Too bad you disagree with their definition. When losing, rewrite the rules.

I win. Get over it. BTW – Italy has like 110 bases all by its lonesome.

I love the fact there are almost nine hundred thousand buildings, too. Seems like, well, you know, too many.

Stop picking nits. You know the US has far too many bases – be it 800 or 80. Hard to convince someone of something when their living depends on believing otherwise.

CIA kinda depended on those bases, or at least in foreign meddling and foreign presence, now didn’t it. Air Force too, come to think of it.

I am aware of your argument. Many of what are termed ” foreign bases’ are a handful of marines protecting a US embassy. Nevertheless that US has far more foreign bases that really count as foreign bases than any other nation. Why does the US even have bases in Germany anymore? Why does the US have bases in former soviet republics such as Kazakhstan or Uzbekistan?

SSS – who said they had to have names? We have defined bases. Nothing in there about names. Wiki says Germany has dozens, Italy 114 by memory, etc etc etc. A base is defined as stated above – land controlled by the military.

Nice diversion attempt.

900,000 buildings. 5 million of acres of land (over 5000 acres per base if we use 800 acres as the number). Hundreds of thousands of troups. Plus untold numbers of spooks, contractors, and hangers on of all varieties.

And SSS wants to quibble.

Stucky, Llpoh

Are you two insane? Even Zara agrees with me that the so-called “800 military bases” probably includes US embassy compounds guarded by US Marines. Those embassy compounds are, by international treaty, considered sovereign territory of the US and are NOT military bases. In fact, control is granted to the US State Department, not the Department of Defense. So let’s subtract about 200 right off the bat, geniuses.

Let’s get more specific. Panama, 1999. The following US military bases disappeared. Whoosh, and they’re gone. Ft. Sherman, Ft. Davis, Ft. Gulick, France Field, Ft. Clayton, Albrook AFB, Ft. Kobbe, Howard AFB, Quarry Heights, Gorgas Hospital, and Ft. Amador. Can you count? Let me do it for you. The answer is 11. Eleven major US military installations disappeared, never to return.

Two hyperventilating dumbasses who don’t know what they’re talking about.

“The sole site listed for Canada is 144 square feet of leased space — equal to a 12-foot-by-12-foot room. Other nations on the list — such as Aruba, Iceland, Indonesia, Kenya, Norway and Peru — have just a few U.S. military buildings, many of them leased. Some of the sites are unmanned radio relay towers or other minor facilities. Most of them are a couple of acres with a cyclone fence and no troops.”

So a fucking rented room, leased buildings, and unmanned radio relay towers count as a “military base.” You clowns are pathetic.

@ Stucky, Llpoh, Admin and Tim

The video claimed that the US had 800 military bases overseas. Stucky posted the video and supported it, so did Llpoh. I threw the bullshit flag on both of them and provided PROOF, indisputable facts, that both the video and their support of same was based on a wildly inflated and unsupportable claim. Llpoh even posted TWICE that the U.S. has 110-113 military bases in Italy alone. You can’t make this shit up, but Llpoh gave it a shot.

Then the discussion, led by Stucky and Tim, turns in a completely direction and cites my inability to “see the larger picture.” More bullshit. I have advocated on this site for at least 5 years in REDUCING US military presence overseas, and I have named names such as Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Spain, Japan, and even South Korea where the US could and should drastically cut its military presence.

Let me give you an example. In my view, there are just 2 critical US military installations in Germany, Ramstein Air Base and the Army’s Landstuhl Medical Hospital. Both are located in the city of Kaiserslautern in SW Germany. We need Ramstein as an airhead to/from Africa and Asia, and Landstuhl for treatment of soldiers wounded in battle in other theaters. US combat troops in Germany? Pfffft. They’re gone. Germany can defend itself, thank you. And that’s a savings of 50,000 right there. Plus their families and DOD civilian employees who support them. Zip, zot. They’re back here in the US where they should be.

I challenge anyone else on this site to bring those kind of facts and specificity to the table.

SSS is probably a govt troll paid to piss people off and he has succeeded. The point of the piece being, way too many bases.
I’m a patriot and conservative on defense issues. But I see an incompetent military that has put our freedom, our safety, at risk.
Sept. 11, 2001: Complete failure. We didn’t even have one fighter jet with one bullet to protect our entire country. All of our planes were unarmed.
Iraq: Complete failure. We’ve been bombing there continuously since Saddam invaded Kuwait.
Afghanistan: Complete failure. Our great military has failed to defeat a bunch of goat herders with AK’s.
Libya: Complete failure
Yemen: Complete failure
Vietnam: Complete failure
North Korea: Complete failure, They got the bomb now.
Iran: Complete failure, almost guaranteed to get the bomb. Still has a death to Amerika day.
This is despite having by far the biggest, ‘best’ , military on earth, despite having over 500 military bases outside of the legal USA. I have no problem with having over seas bases so long as I see some competence in battle. I see none. Not since Japan, 1945.
I say bring most of those boys home and put them on the southern border to stop the ISIS, Al Qaeda and narco-terrorists from waltzing into the USSA. Secure our borders first before sending one GI over seas.

You’re half right. I’m a government (Air Force, CIA) retiree, not troll, and I do sucessfully piss people off here, but I don’t get paid to do so. I have never from the git go on this site hidden who I have worked for. Never. People here who visit here regularly refer to me as the resident spook, the spookmeister, the booger-eating spook (heh), whatever.

Here’s the deal. I don’t like outright fabrications and outrageously inflated stories about ANYTHING, and that’s what this post from Stucky is all about. 800 US military bases overseas is a damned preposterous overstatement of the truth, and I challenged it, all the while AGREEING with the need to cut back on the US military presence in foreign countries, as I have done frequently in the past.

If you see something wrong with that, let me know.
