Answer- 07/28/1932
WWI vets were fired on in DC after the order to police came down from AJ Mitchell. They were defending our rights to assemble and challenge the government. Smedley Butler had visited their camp to support their effort. Granted these were not active duty soldiers.

I’d say just before the tragic denouement at Appomattox. Wearing gray.

No. Not THIS time. That’s because I had to google it a couple months ago when I wrote the 1812 article. Somehow, my two brain cells still remembered it.

I guess I really meant a CSA soldier. But I think you get my drift.

1814 was my answer, as I am from the North, but I like Bea’s answer.

I don’t know the exact dates but the day Breitbart or one of those computer whiz kids TPTB smoked would be my best guess. They weren’t “sign on the line” soldiers but they died trying to expose the theft of our rights.
Thousands of soldiers have unfortunately been brainwashed into believing they were dying for our rights when they were actually dying to enrich the oligarchs.

War is waged by cannon fodder for whoever is running the show. Jonathan Winters, a comedian from my youth, did great audio skits. In one, he impersonates a commanding military officer addressing his troops, who are about to invade an enemy. “Blah, blah…I had hoped to go ashore with you…but they need me here…however, I will be observing the action through heavy lenses…blah, blah….

“Protecting our rights” is the difficult part of this question… as opposed to “defending America” which some could say is the same thing.
If the latter, I’d say December 7, 1941. Or maybe Sept 11, 2001 on Flight 93, but not sure any of them were military.
Or Brian Terry in December 2010, if border control agents count.
A – the fifth of never!
Some probably will in the future as the US comes apart from within.
