DID I DO THAT?

A 12yo Taiwanese boy punched a hole in a valuable 17th century painting by Paolo Porpora at a Taipei exhibition after tripping and trying to catch his balance on the artwork. The painting is worth $1.5mn. His family will not be asked to pay restoration costs.

I taught twelve year olds for several years. You have to understand that an explosive mixture of hormones turns their brains to mush for about a year, and they do things just like the boy in the video. Things generally settle down by thirteen. Thankfully.

I am reminded of one of my favorite 12 year old students. He was so bright and so cute and so charming. One day at lunch he decided what he needed to do was throw his carton of milk. He managed to hit the female principal in the back of her head. Bye bye.

I have zero patience for kids running around acting like brats, but this kid seemed like he was behaving okay. He just honestly tripped. I could see that happening to anyone, although I do wonder why the museum is letting people walk around carrying soda drinks. Can’t people walk around for an hour without holding a cup?

Actually she did deserve it, but that’s a long story.

The boy was smart enough to know that would be a bad move, he just did something stupid and that carton of milk went off on its own trajectory.

Looks like he just slipped / tripped on something, bad on the museum for having the painting within arms reach of the railing, a 12 y/o no less!
