What Do You Know About Science?

Take this fast 12 question multiple choice test.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-3229935/How-know-science-interactive-test-researchers-used-average-American-gets-C-grade.html

Post your results.  Here’s mine.  I missed the “magnifying glass” question.

“You answered 11 of 12 questions correctly.  You scored better than 82% of the public, below 6% and the same as 12%.”

Please state if you are a 9-11 Truther. It is my belief that Truthers are amongst the dumbest people on the planet.  The test results might help answer that question.

Also, if you are a Truther, and if you claim 100%, tell us whether or not you’re lying. Again.

I got 12/12. I guessed on the polio vaccine one, considering the other choices were more well known for other achievements. I consider that question closer to trivia than to science. The magnifying glass was one of the few questions that were easy for me. I guess I can thank my college quantum physics & wave motion class for that.

How would you define a truther?

Some hatefacts in the post survey conclusion:
“‘It is important to know that science is based on evidence and that their daily decisions on daily life can also be based on evidence.’

Holt said he found ‘very troubling’ what the demographic breakdown of the survey showed.

Men in general got one more right answer than did women, while people with college degrees got two more correct answers than did those with a high school education or less.
Whites did better than blacks and Hispanics.

Republicans scored half a correct answer more than Democrats, but Funk said that may be more a racial and ethnic issue, because white Democrats and Republicans had nearly identical scores.
Other studies show gender and racial gaps and scientists consider that a serious problem, Holt said.

The gender difference is noticeable in physical sciences like chemistry and physics and not in biological sciences, Funk said.”

TLDR: Researcher states how important it is for us to take emperical evidence seriously; becomes troubled when empirical evidence shows white men to be smarter than women and minorites and wishes us not to take the evidence seriously.

1000% certain that Bldg 1 & Bldg 2 came down as a result of damage to the steel structure and the weakening of the truss members due to excessive heat and fire .

The Discovery Channel did an excellent documentary on collapse of WTC 1 & 2 not to long after 9/11 presented by the engineers that designed the buildings. Very detailed. Might want to check that out.

MIA, I stay way out of the 9/11 discussions, don’t know enough to add much of value. I do know this. Take the pentagon out of it. All theories other than direct hit by airliner are bogus. I watched on live TV as the plane overshot the white house, banked right, and chose the pentagon as a secondary target. I used to live in DC, the pentagon sits in a triangle of major roads, and it was a bright sunny day. The witnesses must number in the thousands.

Not necessarily a truther, but not a denier either. We’re not being told all the facts, and the ones we’ve been given have been abused to hell. Why didn’t we level saudi arabia when they produced the majority of the hijackers? Where did the missing pentagon money go? What about the documents for operation hammer? The warnings Condilezza Rice recieved while national security advisor?

The scary thing (for me) is looking at the rather less-than-stellar scores for the “Post-Grad” cohort. . . .

Particular areas of concern are very basic physics (reduction in B.P. of ANY liquid , with reduction in atmospheric pressure), – 47% correct; basic optics not much better (53% correct).

As for the “conclusion” of the data presented in the scatter plot, the R value is going to be so low that the “conclusions” are pretty irrelevant. There is a LOT more to dental decay than simple carbohydrate consumption, though it is a contributory factor.

As to the “Truther” label, I think I made my position very clear earlier. I am waiting with interest to see what Russia reveals.

Setting aside the Truther issue since I no longer have the patience to debate with them, I find it appalling that such an easy test would flummox the average citizen to the point they couldn’t answer at least 8 correctly.

12 for 12 64 year-old codger from stone age with measly associate’s degree
Ridiculously easy test. No challenge at. No truther here. Occam’s Razor would argue for the twin towers being taken down by air liner strikes. BTW, I was watching when the 2nd aircraft impacted and heard a woman in a nearby building freak out while being interviewed by Bryant Gumble when it hit. But then I’m so old I REMEMBER Jack Kennedy, the Challenger disaster and the Columbia crash/breakup. I also actually received an injection of the Salk vaccine and later the oral polio vaccine developed by a Dr named Sabine.

Regarding the astrology question, a lot of people truly do not understand the difference between astronomy and astrology. But then I am convinced that for a majority of people today our technology has long since passed the “Clarke point” (i.e. it is sufficiently advanced to be indistinguishable from magic). I seriously doubt most could give a cogent explanation of what happens when they flip on a light switch.

BTW, to my way of thinking, arguing with a 911 truther is like trying to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and only aggravates the truther.

I got 12/12. What an idiotic “test”. God help our civilization.

New question, logic: “Truth is to Lie as Truther is to X” ? If I’m not a “Truther” then logically I am a “Liar”, right?

I remember as a child taking road trips around the South and seeing a chain of tourist traps called Stucky’s. I don’t see those anymore.

I reluctantly agree with the poster in another thread who suggested Mr. Plucky is a paid shill on government payroll. I had just discovered this blog site and was enjoying the hell out of it for several months — when the horse porn post occurred. I was so disgusted and shocked that I deleted this site from my favorites and stayed away for weeks after that.

Who else could get away with livid bestiality porn posts but a government troll? Winking my wit at you, Stuck. You’d be more effective if you weren’t quite so over the top, dude.

Comes now the onslaught of childish taunts.

Well… I got 12 out of 12 in theory, BUT.. while I considered the scatter diagram dental decay/sugar correlation being the expected answer, I went for just an increase in decay instead, so 11 out of 12. Aaaawwww….
Why ? Because while sugar intake has increased it is not demonstrably the sole cause of increase decay.
To say it is is an ASSUMPTION and may lead to false conclusions.
Acidity of foodstuffs and plaque accululation are also a very significant factor and can be independent of sugar.
So.the expected “right” answer ain’t always the right one eh ???
Smarter than the average bear Boo-boo…

I took the test at 3 a.m. I would not have gotten the magnification one no matter… I don’t understand the diagrams. The radio waves was stupid of me… I was a radar tech and for some reason, dismissed cell phone signals as not having anything in common with radar.

But, I’m not even trying to make excuses. I’m not a genius and never wanted to be one.

If you want to appreciate science, stay away from the I fucking love science sites. They make little distinction between hard sciences, like physics and engineering, and pseudosciences like the social sciences.

Speaking as someone who does applied research in one of the hard sciences, I can tell you that the ideas that science is the unassailable truth and the peer review process is efficient are bullshit. In recent years, a troll submitted a scientific paper filled with complete gibberish and false statements, yet the paper was approved by major scientific journals. Many attempts to replicate the results of recent studies have shown that a large percentage of time, the results could not be empirically verified. This shows that a lot of what is passed off as “science” is bullshit.

Researchers are funded by grants from major corporations and the government. As a result, most studies will have implicit political and financial biases, and “unfavorable” results may be minimized or buried altogether. Most real science is really hard, calls for endless amounts of mistake checking, and requires an almost obsessive compulsive attention to detail. I understand how difficult it is, so I’ve humbled myself in most disciplines I don’t have a deep understanding of. I leave you with Feynman:
