Colonel Hogan. My dad only became my hero after I became a dad.

SGT. Bilko on “The Phil Silver’s Show”. Even as a child I could recognize the talent Joos had for shaking down the sheep. Private Doberman’s pockets were cleaned out regularly by SGt. Bilko.

Then I grew up and found out that the goyim don’t have the same talent and if they did they go to jail unlike Wall Street and the FED. Life is not fair, the deck is stacked against us, no more heroes for me.

TE – so funny you mention your grandfather and Amelia Earhart. My grandfather wasn’t my hero growing up (I was not even 2 when he died) but he has become more and more a hero to me as I’ve grown. He lived an amazing life, a true adventurer–including owning a Dude Ranch on the edge of the wilderness in WY where George Putnam and Amelia Earhart were regular guests. In fact, my grandfather was building a cabin for her in 1937 when she disappeared.

Again, my father. For a time I considered a race car driver named Benny Parsons a hero but not for anything he did on the racetrack.

Roy Rogers, Superman, et al. I was attending a DJ convention in Nashville back in 1970 and stepped out to have a smoke when a stretch limo got my attention as it pulled to the curb. I walked toward it to see if it was someone famous, and low and behold it was Roy Rogers and Dale Evans! The funny part is, they thought I was their greeter, so I played along, welcomed them, and opened the door to the hall for them.

Believe it or not, Roy Chapman Andrews, the author of “All About Dinosaurs” (early childhood, 6-8). When middle childhood (9-11) came around, it was a toss-up between Charlie Connerly (NY Giants QB) and my rags-to-riches immigrant grandpa, a tough cookie who was also a regional master in bridge. Over time, Grandpa trumped Charlie.

I’m the above anonymous: why does this comment system sometimes blank out one’s name?

I forgot to add that Grandpa also shot a mean stick in snooker and carried a blackthorn walking stick with a silver pommel and broke some loudmouth slob’s nose with it at a NY Giants game, an incident I can see in my mind’s eye as clearly as if it were yesterday. A portrait photo of him is behind me as I write. I was with my father at his death bed when my father said to him “See you tomorrow, dad” and he replied “No. You won’t. I’ll see you next in hell”. Much as I loved him, I’d rather not see either of them again.

I guess the question depends on the meaning of ‘IS’. My hero right now is LLPOH. I never met a person with his passion for integrity and his willingness to go to the mat to defend her.

Now, EL Doggy doesn’t really exist but he’s a disc jockey’s invention. Still, when I listen to him insisting that women (and men) should be honest and dependable mates, I imagine I’m hearing LLPOH’s voice.
