Blimpie: Headline This

This is what remains of the $1.2 BILLION dollar blimp that crashed in PA today.  Hopefully, Admin and Mike are still with us.

You got a good newspaper headline?

Washington Post – The military lost control of a giant, unmanned surveillance blimp

The incident started shortly after noon, when the blimp became detached from its anchor, NORAD said. Two F-16 fighter jets were scrambled to ensure it didn’t collide with other aircraft. By the late afternoon, the dirigible had come down to the ground, but not before leaving a trail of damage in its wake.

It was unclear how the aerostat got loose and how it eventually came down, said John Cornelio, a spokesman for NORAD. He added it was possible that the helium could have just run out.

“We can assume that an aerostat like this will eventually come back to Earth,” he said.

The blimp wreaked plenty of havoc. Frederick Hunsinger, the Public Safety Director for Columbia County, PA, said in an interview that the blimp’s heavy tether dragged for 20 miles across his county. While there were no injuries within county borders, the damage caused 35,000 to lose electricity, he said. Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania canceled classes as a result; 9-1-1 phone lines were overwhelmed.

“It was a lot of chaos, initially,” Hunsinger said. “It pulled down power lines and utility poles.”

Known as the Joint Land Attack Cruise Missile Defense Elevated Netted Sensor System, or JLENS, the blimp is technically an “aerostat” — a term for a craft, lighter than air, that is tethered to the ground. The $2.7 billion program is on a three-year test run to see if it can help detect cruise missiles or enemy aircraft from 10,000 feet above ground.

Damn JLENS,
Now I only have one to look my window at work. Made the day interesting at lunch time anyway, Fire engines, alarms, what fun. What’s a couple billion dollars. Raytheon WINNING!!

Word around town says these systems failed early durability materials testing and never lived up to contract performance specifications.

This is the kind of DoD shit that makes my blood boil. Whether this useless blimp program (there are only 2 of these test blimps) cost $1.2 billion each or $1.35 billion each, the entire program is outrageous and terminally stupid. What country on Earth is going to have the will, much less the capacity, to sit off the coast of the U.S. and launch cruise missiles at our mainland? Answer: none, because it would be fucking suicide for the attacker.

In the meantime, the Air Force, my former employer, wants to deep-six THE BEST FRIEND OF GROUND SOLDIERS EVER BUILT, the simple and deadly A-10 Warthog. Nothing, and I mean nothing, kills enemy soldiers in close contact with our troops better than the A-10. Yet the Air Force wants to “save” $4 billion by sending the A-10 to the graveyard while using the “savings” to help fund the controversial, multi-trillion dollar F-35 program.

Dump bullshit like blimps and really, REALLY support the troops is my answer to today’s clueless generals and admirals. Damn, where is the leadership? These fuckers are dangerously stupid.

One night the winch on the backup “Air Force-1” couldn’t retrieve the 1 mile long trailing wire antenna and we couldn’t drag it across town when landing so we had to cut it and let it fall somewhere in Nebraska. While at Grand Forks AFB, a B-52 engine fell off and later a farmer found it in his field and called the base to ask if we had lost an engine. As for no country ever launching nuclear cruise missiles (and ICBMs, SLBMs, fractional orbiting bombs, container ship bombs, etc) at us because it would be suicide, that is exactly what they would do in a surprise attack and we’d like to know about it and try to stop them and launch our own ASAP. If they had decapitated our Command Control Communications (3C) as I suspect they can (because of all the anti-Dr Strange Love procedures implemented by Jimmy and Blow Job Bill) and we launched a feeble counter-attack, they would not have committed suicide. Furthermore, Russia has hundreds if not thousands of huge fallout shelters for their population whereas we have DUMBs for the Elite and FEMA camps for the Goy. I hope the balloon’s radar was recoverable.

For detecting cruise missiles and enemy aircraft? Sure.

There definitely wasn’t one of these surveillance arrays on the blimp.

Definitely not.

And nobody used a cutting charge on the tether, either. Nope.

Bullshit. Total bullshit, RHS. This is exactly what the generals and admirals have been feeding TPTB for decades. The 10-foot tall Ivan. The Yellow Menace. You name it. All in the name of bigger and better toys for their services.

I know. I lived it. I saw what these guys were doing …….. “protecting” us from an overinflated and exaggerated threat that didn’t exist. In the meantime, 19 fucking Islamic whack jobs with box cutters killed 3,000 innocent Americans in a matter of hours.

No fucking aircraft carrier fleet or 5th generation fighter could have prevented 9/11. But a sophisticated intelligence network that targeted radical ragheads (Israel, anyone) would have done the job. At h

Warfare changed FOREVER during/after Vietnam. No more large-scale land and sea battles. Pffft. They’re gone. It’s guerrilla versus guerrilla. Small unit tactics. Hunter versus hunted. Relatively cheap stuff.

These cowards at the head of the armed services know what I’ve just said. And they keep on asking for more expensive toys

SSS, the bullshit is deeper at your end. I lived it too back during the Cold War when the Pentagon sent a briefer to tell us Ivan wasn’t 8 ft tall, the USSR would collapse under Communism some day, and the next war would be in a dessert. That was 35 years ago when Russians had to send a man into each silo to start the ICBM’s gyroscopes before a launch and we could watch them. Now I believe they are nearly as good as us except for Carriers; have a radar jammer we can’t beat; fighters, subs and MPADs as good as ours. They also have “secreted” mobile missile launchers and reloads into defiladed mountain tunnels. They have a space program that has a space station and heavy rockets. They have a fairly good Ally called China. Yes, wars are contained for now and Russia was our Ally before Hussein but we now also have many new countries that hate us. The one job WDC cannot let slide is National Defense; they must assure good intelligence, enough equipment deployed and in development, capable and well trained officers and soldiers all with good morale. I imagine that every prerequisite I just mentioned now needs significant upgrading and if the money has to come out of General Welfare then so be it or all you backslidden lazy liberal asses can kiss the whole country goodbye.
