What exactly does the Peace Corp do in today’s world, what purpose does it serve, other than funneling money into various pockets without much accountability for it?
Peace Corps purpose: build schools out of concrete blocks in the 3rd world. Within 5 years, the schools are goat barns. If the people had wanted schools, they would have built them themselves. I’m still waiting for the day a bunch of Kenyans fly to Norway to build schools for the poor Norwegian kids.
Saw an example of the good works of the Peace Corp or some other great organization on a movie just the other day.

Long time reader but my first time posting…

My youngest completed her service with the Peace Corps late last year. The answer would be very little! I am sure there are some countries where there is some good being done but many countries where we have volunteers are just not ready for progress. Many projects fall to the wayside once a volunteer is no longer posted to the area.
The Peace Corps Mission is to promote world peace and friendship by fulfilling three goals:
1. To help the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women.
2. To help promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served.
3. To help promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans.
Goals 2 and 3 are just fluffy feel good goals and are certainly not a good investment of our tax dollars.
Many of the volunteers (although they are paid a small salary) get to their assigned countries and even after 3 months of training lack the skills and motivation to start much less complete any projects in their assigned villages. It turns out to be basically an extended vacation for them. They drink, they party and they travel. Thankfully, some do accomplish some good work and the work lives on otherwise it would be a total waste.
I’m pretty sure most of the volunteers have no idea how to execute the lofty goal of promoting world peace in their twenties or early thirties.
I am grateful that my daughter’s time was well spent and the experience did help her land a wonderful job upon her return home.
Personally, I think the Peace Corps time has passed. Our country is broke and cannot afford to fund a program of ambassadors to developing nations.
