Question of the Day, Oct 31

My October surprise, just got my letter from Independence Blue Cross, my insurance payment is going up 423% next year, assuming no changes in my financials. Since our income is up, the increase will be closer to 1000%. The cherry on the sundae, our out of pocket increased 15%. Please share your healthcare price increases, can anyone top mine?

I’m on the “individual market” and without a subsidy. My increase for next year is 27%, which is in line with Michigan’s average. I thought that was bad, but not horrible. Until I noticed that my deductible and out-of-pocket maximum are going up about 50%, for the same “metal” plan with that 27% rate increase. So my effective rate increase – the coverage I get for what I pay – is more like 80%. M___F—-ers.

I live in the Peoples Socialist Republic of the North (AKA Minnesota – Land of 10,000 taxes).

Many folks have had their premiums go up 30% to 60%. Our governor Mark Dayton (the guy sounds like he’s luded out most of the time) – has a great idea: Let’s give those poor chumps money – yes Minnesota could pay the difference for the next year – until Obomocare is fixed. That’s right just give them something like $75,000,000 dollars!

Could be worse.

You could be covered by the VA.

You might even be able to use it, if you can get past the black suthren wimmen gatekeepers and actually get an appointment as a new patient in Communisota.

My premiums have just gone steadily up for years now in commiefornia. I finally said NO MORE. As of 1/01 I am off Blue Cross and switching to a coop. There are only three available that were grandfathered into the ACA.

IF I stick with Blu Cross my premium is $2,400 per month plus 15k or probably more out of pocket. My “premium” for the coop even with the “catastrophic” plan is $495 per month plus an additional $350 per year for the “extra” coverage.

Though the coop is not technically insurance, it is a way to get excessive health bills paid and as a cash payer you can negotiate with the providers. I will see how it goes, but with 44k out of pocket with Blue Cross I don’t have much to lose.

“Health” insurance is one of the greatest scams of the 20th/21st century.

Along the lines of what Constman is saying. This is the healthshare we are switching too. Grandfathered plan. Basically, the qualifications for this plan are you need to be a “regular” church attendee (Pastor signs off on application and claims) and they won’t pay for self induced health issues. 440 a month for a couple, deductible only $250 per issue.

I asked my wife who takes care of this, she said a fucking lot. She didn’t say this in a loud manner, she said it in a real irritated manner, not going to ask her to clarify further.

We are at $650 a month each with a $4k deductible each, I know this goes up at least 30% next year according to the insurance guy.

well i just found out with today being the first day of open enrollment, our current plan is no longer going to be offered anymore, guess even though i wanted it i couldn’t keep it…
so it’s hard to determine how much worse it is objectively.

we went from various choices to essentially a single choice (ie not much of a choice at all) a tiered “High Deductible” set of options where premiums go down as Deductibles and MOOP go up (thru the roof).

So my plan’s monthly cost (with HSA maxed out) will increase 50% each month but my MOOP went up 67% and my deductible went up 460%.
I’m basically going to be maxing out my HSA contribution to get the tax benefits from setting aside money that would cover my deductible and hope i don’t need it and build up a nest-egg.
In theory if nothing happens i might actually pay less after this year (my HSA only gets deposits and doesn’t have to be used) but that is stupid to assume because the rules, alotments, tax laws etc almost surely won’t remain static from year to year.

So it goes in the New America, good ole USSA…

Somehow even after the rollout presentation, there are still Hillary voters where i work…

Up by $286 a month in 2014 for my wife and I–and we have “company paid insurance”…and now $3000 out of pocket deductibles added in 2016….no notice yet for 2017.
Judging by others here, I guess I have reason to celebrate with “only” $6000 more now than a few years ago.

Just remember that the Supreme Court upheld ObamaScare because it was approved 100% by the Democrats as a TAX …. a really, really big TAX ! Vote accordingly !

Yes, approved as a tax — even though all tax bills must (according to the Constitution that we used to have long ago) originate in the House of Representatives, and Obamacare originated in the Senate.

And, since it’s neither an income tax, sales tax, excise tax, etc., it is a capitation tax (head tax) – explicitly forbidden by the Constitution.

Talk about age discrimination: If you are 65 or over – you are automatically enrolled in Medicare Part A. You can’t ‘unenroll’ – you’re covered. The law states if you are eligible for Medicare you can’t have an HSA!

I had pneumonia earlier this year, the doctor gave me a certificate for a free inhaler – for a year. When I tried to use it – I was told it’s not valid for those eligible for Medicare – fucked again.

I.m thinking the deductibles are causing more people who used to be able to afford medical care on their own to go without healthcare now since they can’t afford both the premiums and the deductibles.

My employer has been absorbing the increases for the most part. Our deductibles went up first. The next year we all had to pay $50/month toward premiums which went up to $75/month this year. The company held our deductibles to $1000/individual and $1500/family despite the deductibles increasing to $5000-$6000. The company eats the deductible above the $1000-$1500 we pay.

No word so far on what will happen next year. Looking at that map and going from memory, it looks like many states that had very modest increases in past years are getting hammered this year.

Suppose you had Geico or Allstate car insurance. You get a notice that your insurance rates are going up 20% or so. You’d be unhappy of course but what if they told you you would be required to pay the first $5,000 or $6000 dollars to repair your car if you got in an accident. Is that even ‘insurance’?

As a retiree the inflation rate 1 Oct 2015 to 30 September 2016. On a $1000 per month pension there will be an increase of $3.00 per check 1 January 2017. I’d like to recieve that 2 percent.

About $4k US to top up the public system (ie to avoid waiting lists, to get private rooms, dental etc. cover, etc.

System is pretty good here if you have private top up cover (you get taxed if you do not maintain private cover).

Found this Blue Cross/Blue Shield letter of renewal informing the recipient of their new costs for 2017:

Estimated Monthly Premium, $1,628.16
Deductable, $10,000 Family Total
Out-of-pocket Maximum, $14,300 Family Total

If it weren’t so tragically real, it would be funny.

Remember this line?
Fundamentally transform the way Americans live their lives.

Then listen to this…

We have not yet decided whether to let our son go without insurance when he turns 23 (and in “theory” he is entitled to remain with our company according to the ACA until 26, BUT since the Tricare age of maturity is 23 and was grandfathered apparently, we would have to get him a separate policy which would be triple what our “family” policy costs under Nick’s military retirement) and just wait until he needs it to get it or gets a job that covers him. I prefer the last and suggested he try to do some IT work while in school if he’s such a smarty pants.

Premiums are “only” up 10-12%, but my deductible climbed an additional 20% or so.

Unless it is for a deadly vaccination, my $14,000+ spent on premiums will not kick in until after $7500 per person is spent. And then they only pay 80%.

Success!
