And while you can’t find it on the Utube, there is also Hotel California from the Hell Freezes Over concert. There are lots of other versions but that one is by far the best. Sometimes you don’t want to shout…you just want to be perfect.

During the tribute to George Harrison several rock gods are up on the stage at the same time.
Prince solo at this point
When Steve Winwod and Jeff Lynne are watching you and trying to figure out how you are doing that neck of the axe shit you are doing it right.
Personally my favorite below (begins at 1:45, really picks up at 2:30, but the guitar work throughout is mind blowing).
Then there’s the intro and outro to this little number…I’m not even sure who it is playing, but it transfixes me every time I hear it:
lol

And then there is the great Tommy Emmanuel. Lets also throw in some amazing acoustic solo too.

Way……….way too many to pick from. I’ll mention Mark Knopfler though.
Best bass solo I ever heard was Joey DeMaio from Manowar doing a song called Black Arrows……..mostly because I never saw anyone do that with a bass. Musically it’s not great but was impressive live.
Music like this will curdle BB’s milk though. Listen with caution if you are sensitive.

So many there cant be a single “best.” From the distant past, the guys who went to new places or just had “that feel”, we have the Allmans, Jeff Beck, Cream era Clapton had real fire, Hendrix, Zappa, Django Reinhardt, Peter Green, Tommy Bolin, the ’67 carnation of Quicksilver, Roy Buchanan, Danny Gatton, Johnny Winter, Jorma, David Bromberg, Doc Watson, Albert Collins, The Kings… BB, Earl, Freddie, & Albert, Bill Kirchen, Scotty Moore, Gary Moore, Ry Cooder, Lowell George, Leo Kottke, & on & on & on…
Rumor has it that one day a reporter asked Hendrix what it was like being the greatest guitar player in the world. He answered, “I dont know ask Rory Gallagher.” Acoustic or electric.
Maybe not the best, but still lots of fun. Enjoy. Happy Friday.
That Bullfrog Blues vid is great. I saw Check Berry once in England and he allowed the crowd up on stage to dance. Cops tried to shut it down but Chuck stopped the show, told the cops it was ok as long as the “dancers were cool” and went back to playing. Great show!
Mr. Banker deserves its own post. Sometimes I think I was southerner in a previous life…

Rory Gallagher was one of the very best! My brother was named after him lol. I was supposed to be named Justin after the lead singer from the Moody Blues.. but mom said no.
I thought it this thread was about greatest solos. I’m not sure Rory will win that award but he is one of the best all around guitarist ever.
Bah, I posted a comment long ago comparing Hotel California and Money For Nothing. I said they had the best guitar riffs ever.
I consider this a theft of my idea.
Perhaps I will steal Big Mike’s idea with my own “Impertinent Question of the Day”.
I could start with this one:
Should the QOTD be cancelled? Has it worn out its welcome? Is Big Mike scraping bottom?
It could save valuable blog space for more important questions.
Leave your comment below. The more derogatory and infamous your assessment of QOTD, the better I will feel afterward.
lol…as a guitar player I’ve been lucky enough to have met and talked with Eric Johnson on a number of occasions . The 1st being the night that “Who Shot JR ” was aired. When we spoke he asked me,” You play guitar don’t you ” ? I replied that yes I did and how did he know ? He told me that the guitar players sit in front and stay glued to watching his hands…yep that was me.
This is one of my favorites….the whole song is a solo as is most of Joe’s stuff.

I have to second ADMIN with this version…
I’ll also throw this one in the ring:
I’d be hard pressed to pick best solo. Best guitar duo: Joe Walsh/Don Felder in “Hotel California”.
My favourite live Album
Exit Stage Left
Spirit of the Radio

No No No. Come on ladies. We all know that Clapton is God.
Not sure if this even qualifies but it is obscure and I have always thought it was so cool:
no mention of guitarist eric johnson??
Lonely in the night
Cliffs of Dover
The into to cliffs of dover is better than the best solo of most guitarists… and that’s not the best part!

And then there is the man that they are trying to emulate.
There are so many
RAM JAM
African Betty
Steve Morse is the Man!
Duane Allman – In Memory of Elisabeth Reed (Live at Fillmore East)
Free Bird by Lynyrd Skynyrd live, 1976: Not my favorite rendition, but it’s live and that’s more fun.

If we’re talking slide guitar, then Duane is definitely one of the best ever.
The amazing Gary Moore:
Old but still great. First concert ever went to.

I’ve always loved Shadow Play.
Then there is Michael Angelo Batio

That is some seriously mad acoustic talent, Mr. Brian. Wow.

Ted is cool, but Mark is the Best ever.
BTW, Mark does not use a pick

Yes, I stole your idea. You’re a special kind of stupid, aren’t ya??
Thanks for the reply! I hope to provide you with more ideas for your QOTD.
Elliott Randall on Reelin’ in the Years. Many others too numerous to mention.
I asked the 15 year old to answer this one. This is what he chose:
