What Could Go Wrong?

Guest Post by Jim Kunstler

“Things fall apart; the center cannot hold.” Yeats wrote. The funny thing is, we didn’t seem to miss the center all that much after it was gone. America is perfectly satisfied hunkering down at the margins these days. Especially the margins of thinking.

One thing that used to occupy the center was public discussion, debate, and argumentation. Now and again, it featured a coherent exchange of ideas. These days, the main political factions are sunk in hysteria of one kind or another. Their primitive promptings hardly add up to ideas but rather limbic spasms of fear and rage. And then there is the shadow partner of the two parties called the Deep State, led by the quaintly dubbed “Intelligence Community.” These birds, many of them lifers, are dedicated to making the public discussion of anything as incoherent as possible so as to prevent any change in policy that might curtail the growth of the Deep State, a sort of cancer of the body politic.

Case in point, the recent Syrian aerial gas attack in the town of Kahn Sheikhoun. Elected officials were all over the cable networks selling the NSA’s story that Syrian president Bashar Assad bombed women and children with Sarin gas three days after State Department declared that it had a new policy of letting Assad remain in power after decades of sedulously scheming to shove him out. That might have led to the end of the six-year-long Syrian civil war, which Assad seemed to be winning, finally — with Russian assistance.

But instead the incident has led to new official calls to shove Assad out… to be replaced by what…? Nobody knows. Because the US Deep State thrives when chaos reigns in foreign lands. So much the better for their looting operations, such as the theft of Libya’s 141 ton gold reserves in 2011. And if not looting hard assets directly, the Deep State benefits when its many black box vendors — the private security armies, materials suppliers, arms sellers — are raking in the accounts receivable.

The fascinating part of the Syrian gas bombing story is how easily the public swallowed it. Those elected congressmen and senators infesting the cable stations told the public that the Intelligence Community “issued a consensus report” that the Syrian air force has dropped Sarin gas bombs on the hapless civilians. Nobody offered any actual evidence that this was so. These days, mere assertions rule.

That’s how we roll now. I’m still waiting to see some evidence that Trump’s campaign “colluded with Russia” to spin the election toward him. Those claims, too, were put out as “a consensus analysis” by the Intelligence Community. And then in March, months after the disputed election, just-retired NSA director James Clapper told NBC’s Meet the Press that his agency had no evidence of “Russian collusion” with the Trump forces. That was only a few weeks ago.

For the moment, it may benefit casual observers to adopt the most cynical attitude possible about the “consensus reports” that emanate from these myriad agencies. What it all finally seems to represent is the snowballing incompetence, venality, mendacity, and impotence of the US government in general, in all its layers and branches.

Hence, the idiotic PR stunt the other day of dropping the so-called “Mother of All Bombs (MOAB)” on some backwater of the once-and-future Mother of All Backwaters, Afghanistan. Did you happen to see a photo of that Mother Bomb? It looked bigger than any airplane that might be assigned to carry it, a cartoon of a bomb, more ridiculous than anything you might see in a Vin Diesel movie. It even had the acronym “MOAB” plastered on its fuselage in case anyone might confuse it with a canister of Round-up. I wonder what it cost. Got to be more than the $1 million-plus for a Tomahawk missile. You could probably run the whole Medicaid system of Alabama on what one MOAB invoice comes in at.

Meanwhile, the Navy’s Aircraft Carrier Strike Force 1 steams off the waters of North Korea and we lately have word that the US might just try to preemptively take out Kim Jong-un’s nuclear bomb assembly site. There’s a tang of excitement in the air (and on the cable channels). America’s back in the game, proving that when all else fails we can be depended on at least to blow some shit up. What could wrong?

Trump reminded me of the Pink Panther, Inspector Clouseau, Peter Sellers. Not Dr. Strangelove.
Trump is looking more like Peter Sellers, the actor’s works, than a president.. Maybe I’m just dumb and cannot imagine working in upper levels of U.S. government, the Cuckoo House.

When the press or those elected by the people press for specific evidence to support the “consensus reports,” the response is always “We can’t share classified information.” What a racket.

If the sheep turned on the tv to watch the military stack up bundle after bundle of cash money into a huge pile 20 feet high (the equivalent of what is being spent on these bombs in the last week) then set it ablaze, John Q. Taxpayer would go batshit crazy over such a vast amount going up in smoke. They would call for heads to roll at the pentagon BUT they will grunt with mass approval if it is in the form of bombs to kill the fake “bad guys”.

Anyone have any idea as to what happened to that 141 tons of gold stolen from Libya .Who got it .This for sure was a looting operation to stop Libya from sitting up its own gold backed currency.

That was the final reason to take out Gaddafi – using the Gold Dinar as a currency among 22 African Nations and as a start to destroy the petrodollar.

Goldman Sachs surely had something to do with this, as well they most likely laundered that gold by melting it into another one of their numbered bars, would be my guess. A criminal bank taking care of criminal takings. Why I wouldn’t be surprised if one or more of those bars was “donated” to the Clinton Foundation you know for all that great and honorable charity work they do – mostly for themselves.

Uh, don’t you think that a crime family of incredibly wealthy people, who are basically pushing for said nuclear war, would have the best odds of surviving it?

I mean, if you plan an event, know exactly when it’s coming, and have more resources than anyone else to deal with it – wouldn’t your odds of survival be above average?

Greetings,

We’ve known from day one that the deep state wants/needs a war. The problem is that we’ve reached Peak War and there are not too many places left where we can bomb without the worry of one of the other SuperPowers giving it right back. Even N. Korea presents a serious challenge given what they can do especially to S. Korea which happens to provide lots of the junk that we sell to one another.

I recall reading about alternative payment for Libyan oil with gold. Khadfi was bombed (killed) shortly thereafter under questionable circumstances.

The Rothschild’s hate competition. The posted video suggest a revolution. It would be far more effecient & effective to kill the majority of the Rothschild’s who are adults. Wipe out a managing generation and reset.

I believe that occured in France around 1789. While their revolution took 70+ years before a new structure emerged, it was still a success.

Kunstler’s escape from the Matrix seems complete. In fact, I no longer see half a dozen folks bitching that he can’t be trusted because he voted for Obama. Or maybe those folks finally realize people can make mistakes and vote for the wrong guy for President. Especially since every President we get seems to be the wrong guy.

Welcome to the land of the dirt people Jim. Now have a seat with the readers who voted for W, Obama, and Trump. You can all share stories about how you were fooled.

War is a racket : Schmedley Butler layed out the how why and who a long time ago and nothing has changed . Ron Paul attempted to lay out the quagmire of finance and incomprehensible situations we were embarking on financially and militarily and the damage that will be inflicted upon us all . Where are they now ? Left in historical obsecurity , ignored while people actually believe the likes of the Clinton’s , Bushes , Obama and now Trump . Time to get a clue : the supporters from Wall Street to K-Street to Capital Street are domestic enemies of the American people and our Constitutional Republic . Remember our oath to protect and defend against all enemies foreign and domestic ? The experiment in individual freedom , liberty with pride in one accepting accountability and responsibility for our own actions and enduring the consequences is all but gone . I fear it is too late now !

“Every news report about cost of the “Mother of All Bombs” relied on a misreading of a 2011 article or a dubious internet website that InfoWars once linked to with a “healthy bit of skepticism.”

The actual cost of the bomb is unknown. The actual cost of the program isn’t publicly available because the Mother of All Bombs, officially known as GBU-43 or the Massive Ordnance Air Blast (MOAB), is manufactured by the military and not a private defense company.

In fact, the Air Force doesn’t even keep track of the per unit cost, nor the cost of the program as a whole, because it is not manufactured privately.

“We don’t have a cost per unit” for the MOAB, Air Force spokesperson Ann Stefanek told The Daily Caller News Foundation. “These munitions were produced in-house so we don’t have a standard procurement cost associated with them.”

So what is Kunstler’s point? The people delegate the responsibility of managing a nation to a very small number of people, one of which is the President. What are the options? Don’t vote? Vote and bitch no matter what happens? Don’t trust anything or anyone in government? Complain about the stupid sheep who watch the news? What options? Have a government that doesn’t say anything? Have a government that communicates something but not everything, and is thus accused of all manner of infamy and deception? This article and all its ilk fail to offer anything of value. The only solution is the anarchists’ dream of abolishing all government. That is the point of this article and is absurd on its face.

gnome,

your contentions are insipid and downright irrelevant.

it’s up to the leaders of the fucking government (that we vote into office) to operate with integrity and honor. to further the long term well-being of our nation by continuously making wise decisions. that is why we vote for them. we entrust them to abide their campaign promises. they should be endowed to us based on what they told us when running for office. it’s called being an upstanding person and doing the right fucking thing. they should be willing to die for their integrity, their honor, and their promises to us, especially when the weight of the entire nation rests on their shoulders.

instead, we get some cowardice piece of shit like Trump who many of us on this website actually believed might be “different”. that he might not ignite senseless wars just to line the pockets of the Deep State. that he might take a bullet to the head like JFK just to defend his promises to us.

I certainly didn’t believe he would do any of that, but I had hope that he would. instead, it’s not even 100 days in and I’m genuinely pissed off. Trump half-assed his health care bill, hence why his own party voted it down. he left too much Obamacare in it. he bombed a sovereign nation without congressional authorization. based on a phony gas attack that could’ve easily been staged by the rebels. he really hasn’t done shit. and I don’t mind if he takes a year or two to fulfill even a couple campaign promises. but don’t fucking tell me you’re going to repeal Obamacare then support a bill leaving most of it in tact. Don’t tell me you’re going to put America first then bomb some towelheads that an average, obese American could kill with their fat asses and gastric farts. all based on bullshit.

I repeatedly spoke out in favor for Ted Cruz and Rand Paul when they were candidates because they actually have a track record of standing up against the establishment. but I was laughed at. not just on this website, but everywhere I spoke their names.

yet here we are. stuck in a quagmire with Donald Trump and his egomaniac daughter and son-in-law. all of which have a grand total of 3 months actual political experience. in the highest office of the nation. calling the shots.

the idea that a mentally ill reality television star could not be compromised by the Deep State is foolish. Trump never had a fucking chance. He has too much skin in the game. The Deep State could bankrupt him inside 6 months if they wanted to.

this website is convinced that America’s fall will be due to an economic collapse. I respect that but I truly believe that our igniting of World War III will be the catalyst of it all.

I’m pissed off.
