Why We’re Fragmenting: The Status Quo Is Disintegrating

Authored by Charles Hugh-Smith via OfTwoMinds blog,

The system is disintegrating, and slapping a “reformist” coat of paint over the dryrot cannot renew the structural timbers that have rotted to their very core.

I confess to being amused by the mainstream media’s implicit view that everything would be peachy if only Trump wasn’t president. Memo to MSM: the nation is fragmenting for reasons that have nothing to do with who’s president, or indeed, which party is the majority in Congress, who sits on the Supreme Court, or any other facet of governance.

The nation is fracturing and fragmenting because the Status Quo is failing the majority of the citizenry. The protected few are reaping all the benefits of the Status Quo, at the expense of the unprotected many.

As I have outlined many times, this unsustainable asymmetry is the only possible outcome of our socio-economic system, which is dominated by these forces:

1. Globalization–free flow of capital, labor arbitrage

2. Nearly free money from central banks for financiers and corporations

3. Pay-to-play “democracy”

4. State protected cartels that privatize gains and socialize losses

5. A system stripped of self-correcting feedback and accountability

Once you understand the inputs and structure, you realize there is no other possible output other than unsustainably expanding debt and wealth/income inequality. Policy tweaks cannot change the output; all they do is provide an illusion of reform that serves the need of those at the top to obscure the systemic injustices and unsustainability of the extractive, exploitive, predatory, parasitic system that’s enriching them.

What do people do when centralized systems fail to deliver what was promised? They fragment into smaller “tribes” and find fewer reasons to cooperate in centralized systems. As historian-economist Peter Turchin explained in his 2016 book Ages of Discord, human history manifests cycles of social disintegration and integration in which the impulse to cooperate in large social structures waxes and wanes.

Turchin identified 25-year cycles that combine into roughly 50-year cycles, comparable (though not identical with) Kondratieff’s proposed economic cycles.

These 50-year cycles are part of longer 150 to 200-year cycles that move from cooperation through an age of discord and disintegration to a new era of cooperation.

This work draws upon his previous books, including War and Peace and War: The Rise and Fall of Empires, which I referenced in Following in Ancient Rome’s Footsteps: Moral Decay, Rising Wealth Inequality (September 30, 2015) and The Lesson of Empires: Once Privilege Limits Social Mobility, Collapse Is Inevitable (April 18, 2016).

These long cycles parallel the cyclical analysis of David Hackett Fischer, whose masterwork The Great Wave: Price Revolutions and the Rhythm of History I’ve referenced many times over the years, most recently in We’ve Entered an Era of Rising Instability and Uncertainty (July 18, 2016).

Turchin’s model identifies three primary forces in these cycles:

1. An over-supply of labor that suppresses real (inflation-adjusted) wages

2. An overproduction of essentially parasitic Elites

3. A deterioration in central state finances (over-indebtedness, decline in tax revenues, increase in state dependents, fiscal burdens of war, etc.)

These combine to influence the social order, which is characterized in eras of discord by declining loyalty to self-serving special interests (disintegration) and in eras of cooperation by a willingness to compromise for the good of the entire society (integration).

As I have often explained, centralization is now a disruptive drag rather than a benefit. Centralization provided widespread gains in efficiencies in its boost phase, but now that it is sliding down the S-curve, it only benefits the few at the expense of the many.

The returns on centralization have diminished to less than zero: centralization’s primary outputs are now corruption, lack of accountability, cronyism, complexity moats and bureaucratic thickets that obscure the self-serving nature of centralized power.

State of Denial: The Economy No Longer Works As It Did in the Past (May 16, 2017)

The structural failure of our political-economic system cannot be remedied by electing a new president or swapping failed political parties. The system is disintegrating, and slapping a “reformist” coat of paint over the dryrot cannot renew the structural timbers that have rotted to their very core.

Identifying cycles can be a parlor game, but there is no denying that we’re deep into a disintegrative phase that will probably come to a head between 2021 and 2029.

How are any of these theories different from Strauss and Howe’s cyclical/generational theory of history? This is just a (thankfully) brief rehash of trends that any thinking person has seen unfolding for years.

Meh.

How old are you? I’m curious because if you knew how old Charles Hugh Smith was and then realize he can run circles around you, mentally and, probably, physically, you’d give him his dues.

Are you really so incredibly naïve that you think age necessarily confers wisdom? I’m sure Mr. Hugh-Smith is an extremely intelligent man and I’ve read and liked many of his posted thoughts. Nevertheless, my question is a fair one. The comment which followed could, perhaps, have been phrased in a kinder way, but I’m guessing Mr. Hugh-Smith is not going to lose any sleep over it. Apparently questioning authority is a foreign concept to you.

It seems to me that you are a childish maroon and appear to be an easily offended snowflake-type inividual. Perhaps you should have added “nyah, nyah, nyah, nyah, nyah” to your post ya big baby!

My guess is you tend to blindly worship at the altar of authority as well. You’d do well to remember that truth is truth no matter the age or position of the source.

You sir, are a ninny.

I don’t care how it “comes across” to someone who tugs his forelock and nods in servile agreement every time one of his betters posts something. I can explain the reference to you if necessary.

I am doing my part by not cooperating in ANYTHING government. I refuse to purchase anything on credit. If I can’t afford it in cash, I don’t buy it. I sold all of my business interests in the last 10 years. Most before the 2007 collapse. If I have the choice of purchasing something locally, and being forced to pay sales tax – which funds bloated budgets for warriors in blue, or buy the thing on the internet, and pay shipping, I will purposely pay the shipping cost instead. I WILL NOT put any of my new ideas in to practice to start a new business. I only keep an income stream large enough to maintain daily expenses, and keep up with inflation. Period. No more than is necessary is taxable, in turn denying the MIC and the parasite class with their sustenance – taxes.
The best way to fight against the parasites is to reduce your financial foot print as much as possible. Denying the parasites of their weapons of your destruction. If enough people do this, the parasite class will die on its own. Doing my part to help along the disintegration process.

I don’t believe that can or will stop them. Print, print, print and the force behind the fiat game is all that is needed to carry on.

End The Fed. Who’s going to do it? Bueller…bueller.

Well at least they are narrowing the time of collapse down .Shit is going to hit the fan in next 6 to 10 years .It will be biblical in nature . God’s righteous wrath will destroy America .No other except Satan has committed a more treasonous Sin against God then what America has done.I think the Money elites will wait until they are sure whites are at half the population. They will make sure whites can’t vote in another Trump or nationalistic leader.

I still prefer Prechter’s Socionomic Hypothesis.

It doesn’t attach time frames (because no one –including him– knows when the trend will turn) but it offers an insight no one else does: degrees of trend.

We’re in the final wave up of a final wave up of a final wave up, preparing to “correct” a bull market (in social mood, and all it animates) going back to the 1700’s at LEAST.

This makes sense to me. It explains (better) why things have become completely insane.

FWIW, his best book was At The Crest of the Tidal Wave, published in 1995. But oh crap, was his timing off.

No one can tell, in advance, How High is UP?

FTR, I think we’ve begun a small degree correction in stocks, the SPX will stop declining near 2280 or as low as 2230, and then spend most of June and probably all July in hitting new All Time Highs….for the last time. The pattern at that point will be complete, and IF MR. MARKET WISHES, we will finally enter the LONG awaited, Massive bear market we’ve had baked into the cake for two decades (and counting.)

Of course, I could be wrong. I don’t even have a trading account any more, so bad am I at this stupid stuff.

The Economic Cycle will be OBE: Solar Cycle 25 in 3 years will probably be as weak as during the Little Ice Age 1300-1850. There is nothing we can do about what it will do to crops, the economy and the huge FSA the liberals have created. Solar Hibernations experience Natural Disasters and I expect the New Madrid, San Andreas and Cascadia Earthquakes; Campi Flegrei and Yellowstone Volcanoes, etc. Ref Matt 24; Rev 6; and Prov 22:3

Solar radiation protects the Earth from cosmic rays.

A sleeping sun causes the Earth to be hit by increased cosmic radiation.

I subscribe to the theory that cosmic radiation that penetrates the planet CREATES MATTER, and that the Earth was much smaller than now a hundred million years ago. [For example: dinosaurs the size of a brachiosaurus could not exist in a gravitational field as strong as Earth’s now. It is a feat of biological engineering that (much smaller) giraffes can exist.]

Ergo: a sleeping sun will cause more matter to be created in the Earth’s core, resulting in a major increase in activity around the planet’s tectonic plates (and especially around the Ring of Fire and Iceland’s mammoth volcanoes.) Look for some Krakatoa-sized events.

Some of us are wise enough to realize the limits of our knowledge and accept the possibility that a new idea was within the realm of possibility. Others are so clueless that to them, each day they open their eyes they think they’re the only ones in the world who can see.

I’m betting that if you were standing face to face with me that you’d paste a very large smile on your face if you were dumb enough to say that. 95% chance I’d be looking DOWN on you, and a solid 90% chance I’d be capable of bouncing you around the room. But I don’t look for trouble because unlike you, I know what it’s like to incite someone else to violence and it’s not that fun. Even the smallest, most chicken-shit asshole like you can pull out a gun and create a lose-lose.

So go away. Drown your tiny ego somewhere else.

You’re a good troll, though. I judge that by how much I’d like to see you in person and try out the right-left combination I enjoy on the heavy bag. I know punching down is frowned upon, but clowns like you beg for it. I figure sooner or later you’ll slip, and irritate someone in meat-space who is like me in some ways, not like me in self-control.

I console myself in knowing that you’ll never be able to leave your mommy’s basement, or take your hand off your itty-bitty thingie.

I find it interesting that you have no argument.
What you posted is scientific nonsense and you offer no sources to refute that statement.
You rely on the 12 year old school yard crap, and then tell me what a chickenshit I am. See any irony there?
Since you don’t know me or a damn thing about me, this tells me you are too ignorant to consider that you may be outclassed. Never lost a fight? Are you a big tough guy that has nothing to rely on but size? I’ve dealt with people like that all my long life, and I’m still here.
You are also not smart enough to avoid threatening personal violence on a public website. See any black SUV’s drive by lately? Ever wonder who is recording your phone conversations and posts?
I bet you are already on a watch list.
