THIS DAY IN HISTORY – Flight 800 explodes over Long Island – 1996

Via History.com

Shortly after takeoff from New York’s Kennedy International Airport, a TWA Boeing 747 jetliner bound for Paris explodes over the Atlantic Ocean, killing all 230 people aboard. Flight 800 had just received clearance to initiate a climb to cruise altitude when it exploded without warning. Because the plane was loaded with fuel for the long transatlantic journey, it vaporized within moments, creating a fireball seen almost all along the coastline of Long Island.

The tragedy came just two days before the opening of the XXVI Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia, and many suspected terrorism. Suspicions of foul play seemed to be confirmed when a number of eyewitnesses reported that they had seen what appeared to be a missile shoot up toward the airline an instant before the explosion. The U.S. Navy and the FBI, in conjunction with the National Safety Transportation Board, launched an extensive investigation of the incident, collecting the scattered wreckage of the aircraft out of the Atlantic and reconstructing the plane in a closely guarded hangar. Despite continuing eyewitness reports, authorities did not come forward with any evidence of a missile or a bomb, and the investigation stretched on.

When it was revealed that several U.S. Navy vessels were training in the Long Island area on the night of the blast, some began to suspect that Flight 800 had been accidentally downed by a navy test missile. U.S. authorities ruled out the possibility of an errant missile strike by the navy, but a number of conspiracists, including former White House press secretary Pierre Salinger, supported the theory. The much-criticized Flight 800 investigation ended in late 1998, with investigators concluding that the explosion resulted from mechanical failure, not from a bomb or a missile.

‘Nelson DeMille’s bestselling novel. Nightfall, opens on July 17, 1996, with a steamy encounter on a Long Island beach. The man and women involved decide to videotape their coupling. In the process, they inadvertently capture the destruction of TWA Flight 800. The novel centers around that video.

Through his many contacts with the NYPD/Joint Terrorism Task Force DeMille learned there was a real video out there. To the best of my knowledge, the FBI confiscated the original from the MSNBC studios in the early morning hours of July 18, 1996.

Although I have communicated with scores of people who saw the video when it briefly aired, I have only spoken to one who knows exactly what he saw. His name is Thomas Young. Here is his story:

In early August 1996, I was admitted to the Seventh Day Adventist Hospital in Hong Kong for ten days with a back injury. My employer, Polar Air Cargo, flew my wife Barbara out to join me as our anniversary was in a few days, and I knew my wife would be worried sick with me being hospitalized in a foreign country.

We had little else to do but watch TV as I was in traction for most of the hospital stay. From the first day of being admitted to the hospital until the morning I was discharged from the hospital and boarded a flight for San Francisco, I witnessed a devastating video of a missile launch recorded by an unknown Long Island, NY resident.

The video was re-played every 15 minutes (24/7) on the local English-language, Cantonese-, and Mandarin-language television stations. It was recorded on July 17, 1996.

The videotape began with people milling about on a deck facing a body of water. In the background, a streak of light can be seen leaving a point below the edge of the deck, vertically — then curving to flatten the climb to have more of a horizontal component — accelerating as it climbed. It passed behind what appeared to me to be a thin cloud layer and continued upward out of the frame, from right to left.

As the streak of light disappeared beyond the edge of the frame, after a slight pause, there is a generalized, dim, but sharp flash on the upper left side of the screen, followed almost immediately by a brighter and more pronounced flash lighting the layer of clouds near the top of the video image.

Three characteristics of the missile’s flight clearly convinced me what I was seeing.

First, the missile’s path changed from nearly vertical to an angle with much more of a horizontal component, consistent with that of a guided missile.
Second, for the entire time (of several seconds duration) that the missile was recorded on the video, as evidenced by the white-hot exhaust gasses and the smoke plume that followed, the missile was in powered flight — unlike fireworks or flares.
Third, the rate of acceleration and course correction changes are consistent with a guided missile — in my experience, quite possibly a shoulder-launched surface- to-air anti-aircraft missile (or MANPADS).’

One of the first and best examples of the government telling Amerikans not to believe their own eyes and those of their neighbors.

They must have been amazed at how easy it was. Probably convinced them they could get away with 911.

I agree with your sentiment but it was the JFK coup that set the dial to ‘anything goes’.

JFK was shot by Oswald but the fatal shot was accidentally fired by a SS agent in a trailing vehicle. The Smoking Gun on youtube is a fascinating 1 hour view.

The article pasted above by Jack Cashil sp? is the latest in long history he has of attempting to document and publicize the truth.

He has presented an undeniable & logical explanation why the reasons given by our government for the explosion are lies. I’d like to think there was a time when the media would have taken it upon themselves to explore this one. But nooooo(in my best Belushi) at the time, getting Clinton reelected was paramount.

Exactly like these days with all of the Russia Russia bullshit. Rather then spend 1 fucking minute high lighting some of the positive aspects of what Trump is accomplishing, 97% of their time is spent on this LOOK a Squirrel garbage which is meant 100% to undermine this administration. It took years for W to sink to the upper 20% and this time Maddow et.al have the cooperation of our rat bastard RINO Congress and the nevertrumpers.

It’s so bad that even bright folks like our admin gets down in the dumps. Not that there’s good reason to look on the dark side, but damnit Jim, I’m a Doctor(so to speak).

FWIW, if you ever film something major, and especially major with any potential to be controversial, make a secret copy or two of it that no one knows about and keep it hidden for future use just in case before you make it known you have it.

T’was a missile. Obviously Russian (or Iranian).

Or one of our own fired by accident during a training accident.

Considering the politics of the time, that could make more sense for a total coverup of the affair.

Every former TWA employee I’ve ever met would be labeled as a conspiracy theorist.

I remember that night well. Was fooling around with my then girlfriend and the news footage of burning fuel on the water from the corner of my eye distracted me. It was a hot summer evening, even in the midwest where I was. Recall thinking “that sucks” back when it seemed we were all more hardened to a major air incident at least once a year. Went back to college that fall and really didn’t give it a second thought. Fast forward to early 2000’s and I read DeMille’s book (on a flight for that matter) and I’m hooked on the story. Read the book “First Strike” and haven’t believed the Gov’t narrative since. Not sure what really happened but a center fuel tank explosion it was not.

It hasn’t happened since, either. Just like steel framed buildings collapsing due to office/jet fuel fire.

I wonder if anyone important was on that flight.

Good question. It was the 1st time a president (Bubba) paid his respects to the grieving families of ‘a plane crash’. A tell tale sign of complicity.

It is the reason every president in my living memory has gone grey within 2 years of being in office. There is real evil out there.

“Important” to the future of American truth no doubt, but not “important” enough to TPTB to keep them alive. Likely NOT an accident and most certainly NOT an exploding fuel tank.

AA587 was a vertical stabilizer that exceeded its design limits and broke off. Pilot error but I’d argue poor design on Airbus. At any rate I don’t think pilots think that crash was a coverup whereas there are many that don’t agree with the flight 800 narrative.

In 2001 I saw this show on one of the cable tv channels….

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6umn4nsNN2E

After watching it I started to subscribe to Jack Cashill’s email updates. He covers lots of things, but TwA 800 has his attention. If you want to read more (besides his latest book) go here where he has over 120 articles related to TWA 800

http://www.cashill.com/twa800/

It looks like another documentary was made in 2013: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3040528/

I have not yet seen this movie.

Cashill has also written two books on the subject, the first in 2003 and the most recent in 2016.

I encourage you to watch the youtube. I am rewatching it now myself.

If an exploding fuel tank caused the crash then every 747 on the planet would have been grounded. The navy used this excuse to mothball dozens of their aging F-14s. Total bullshit lie through and through. It was an accidental missile hit that brought 800 down, why doesn’t the ptb just admit it. Again total bullshit. thanks

Because it probably wasn’t an accident.
