Question of the Day, Sep 7

Is it Libertarian to support illegal immigration? Is it Libertarian to not support proper law and order? If so, I guess I have to turn in my card.

LP denounces end of DACA

The Trump administration has announced that it will end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program commonly known as DACA. DACA protects immigrants who came to the U.S. as children. Since it’s implementation, DACA has saved almost a million young immigrants from deportation and has allowed them to work legally in the US.

Libertarian Party national chair, Nicholas Sarwark, says, “This is a heartless move by the Trump Administration. The recipients of DACA did nothing wrong. In fact, their parents loved them so much as to risk everything to bring them out of areas of extreme violence and poverty. They wanted a safer, better life for their children in America. How can we disparage them for that? This president shows mercy to a criminally convicted sheriff, but would toss young immigrants to the wolves for the acts of their parents? You can measure a bully based on whom they choose to pick on.”

The Libertarian Party does not support classifying undocumented immigrants, of any age, as criminals. The current US immigration system is an embarrassment. People who would like to follow the legal procedures are unable to because these procedures are so complex, expensive, and lengthy.

If Americans want immigrants to enter through legal channels, we need to make those channels fair, reasonable, and accessible.

Libertarians believe that if someone is peaceful, they should be welcome to immigrate to the United States.

Dear Libertarians: Are you willing to sponsor one or two and be responsible for their bills and all associated transgressions?

Contrary to the cnn advertising program they are not all brain surgeons and software engineers…..

Shouldn’t Libertarians oppose DACA because it was a federal government mandate made solely by President Obama?

Libertarians support open borders and unrestricted immigration.

If they achieve their goals there will be no illegal immigration anymore, it will all be legal.

Well, this is a big controversy among Libertarians and libertarians. The “official” Party is for open borders. But many libertarians, myself included, recognize that open borders are not compatible with a welfare state.

Go over to the Reason website if you want to see a raging debate among libertarians (small l and big L) about this issue. The “theoretical” wing thinks that people have the Natural Right to go where they please and work where they please so long as they don’t violate anyone’s property rights or personal liberties. The “practical” wing (to which I belong) thinks that being forced to pay for the welfare state at gunpoint by the IRS to support “dreamers” and other immigrant grifters is not exactly my idea of liberty or libertarianism. As I’ve said on TBP before, if we eliminate the welfare state, we shall get exactly the right number and type of immigrants we need.

I have suggested quite often (to howls of abuse) on the Reason site that immigration is a strange hill upon which Libertarians should choose to die. $20B in debt, constant warfare and a panopticon surveillance state don’t elicit 5% of the Libertarian Party emotion in comparison with DACA. Strange!

By the way, if you think it gets testy in the comments section of TBP, you ain’t seen nothing yet! The in-fighting among libertarians of all stripes is nasty, brutal, cruel and personal. The Reason site is not for the thin-skinned. All you need to do to understand the failure of libertarianism in US politics is to read the comment section of Reason regularly. It’s a pity really.

Of course, you could just watch the Monty Python “Life of Brian” skit on the PFJ/PJF hatred and skip the Reason site. Why is it that “fringe” groups seem to have the most intense ideological battles? The official Libertarian party has now purged, in Trotskyite fashion, all the non-open borders folks like me. Many have drifted to the Alt-right and paleocon side. The rest of us wander……….

There were classical Libertarians in late 19th century England. Today they are just a bunch of wack jobs.

@Dutchman: I’m a different kind of Libertarian.. A Pragmatic Libertarian.

If a “Dreamer” has been living in this country 18 years, speaks English, works and pays taxes, then let him/her stay and be a contributing citizen. Take it one case at a time. If they come in to drop babies for the welfare system to manage, fuck ’em and ship ’em home.

If they come illegally as kids years ago and have made an American life for themselves, let ’em stay. We need all the tax payers we can get to help support the nigger welfare maidens and their bastard babies.

It is not Libertarian to support ILLEGAL immigration, as they are violating the freedom of legal citizens. We need to have immigration laws and enforce them. If someone doesn’t like the current laws, work to have them changed, don’t try to avoid them.

it become obvious that the leadership of the libertarian party has been infiltrated by actors/plants from the GOP establishment to use to the service of the never trumpers. The party is small and poorly funded . That leaves it rife for the political hacks from the GOP establishment to spend a little time and money to help their old time liberal republicans like Gary Johnson / weld take over the party leadership. They gave jeb bush $150 million before the primary started . Clearly they could spare a few bucks to republicans too liberal to be useful inside the party, allowing them to ” switch parties” campaign as libertarians”.

These guys are like john kasich, who tried to help Hillary win the election after trump mathematically locked up the nomination.
consider Jill stein, the green presidential candidate. She endorsed trump over hillary during the late stages of the campaign because she said that hillary was too beholden to wall street.
Yet a Week after trump won , she went to court in the close states like my home of Michigan and sued for a recount. Why did she “suddenly ” change her mind ? where did she get the money to fund the recounts?
This isn’t the dreaded “conspiracy theory ” Its just good effective political operations.

@rhs jr.: There is a BIG DIFFERENCE between a big “L” as a classic liberal and the small “l” as liberals are labeled today.

Classic Liberals were close to Libertarians. They were infiltrated and corrupted as time went by and are all shit-birds now.

“The current US immigration system is an embarrassment. People who would like to follow the legal procedures are unable to because these procedures are so complex, expensive, and lengthy.”

Then change the fucking immigration system though the constitutional system of rule of law.

You can’t argue with these namby pambys who want to change or simply ignore the law based on their feelings.

I also believe our system of immigration sucks. Our elected representatives did that on purpose. Create a need for some, a problem for others and then campaign for and against the same issue.

The issue is mind boggling, on one hand the current mood is to allow anyone into the country, treat them like citizens and allow them the benefits of a tax paying citizen, but tax the fuck out of anyone that is a legal citizen and tax paying successful producer.

I agree, if this is what the Libertarian Party believes, fuck them, my card will be in the shredder and zero donations from this guy.

The Libertarians lost me years ago with their open borders BS and emphasis on legalizing drugs while ignoring property rights. Damn shame.

The Libertarians have always been practically irrelevant, and became theoretically irrelevant when the Fat Man danced naked at their convention.

It is Nationalism vs. Globalism now. That is the only issue of our time. All else is commentary.

I tweren’t a Libertarian to begin with. Libertarianisn is a fantasy that requires people that have the ability to live responsible lives that also do not interfere with the rights of others. Never gonna happen. Humans interact with each other and despite the best of intentions, conflict and transgressions will occur requiring some higher authority to resolve.

This jackass says “The recipients of DACA did nothing wrong. In fact, their parents loved them so much as to risk everything to bring them out of areas of extreme violence and poverty. They wanted a safer, better life for their children”.

Well, then does that mean every bank robber that is in jail was trying to also provide a safer and better life for their kids and we should allow the kids to keep the money? Your money from your checking account? Yeah didn’t think so dumbass……
