The Dead Soul of Stephen Paddock

Guest Post by Patrick J. Buchanan

What was his motive? Why did he do it?

Why did Stephen Paddock, 64, rent rooms at the Mandalay Bay hotel, sneak in an arsenal of guns, a dozen of them converted to fully automatic, and rain down death on a country music concert?

“We will never know,” writes columnist Eugene Robinson.

“There can be no rational argument for mass murder … nothing can really explain the decision to spray thousands of concert-goers with automatic weapons fire, killing at least 59 and injuring hundreds more.”

But while there can be no justification for mass murder, there is an explanation. And like Edgar Allan Poe’s “Purloined Letter,” it is right there in front of us, in plain sight.

Having chosen to end his life, Paddock resolved to go out in a blaze of publicity. This nobody would leave this life as somebody we would have to remember. He would immortalize himself, as did Lee Harvey Oswald.

Reportedly, Paddock even filmed himself during his massacre.

Ex-Marine sniper Charles Whitman, who murdered his wife and mother, and then climbed up into the Texas University Tower in Austin, 50 years ago, to shoot down 46 people and kill 15, is the prototype.

Whitman’s slaughter ended after 96 minutes when a cop climbed up in that tower and shot him. Yet, half a century on, Whitman remains famous. Many of us can yet recall his name and face.

Like Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold before Columbine, and Dylan Roof before his sickening atrocity at the black church in Charleston, Paddock wanted to live on as one of the great mass murderers in U.S. history. And he has succeeded. We are today paying him in the currency he craved. He is famous, and we have made him so.

Monday, the president spoke at the White House on the “act of pure evil” Paddock perpetrated Sunday night. Network and cable TV anchors and correspondents stampeded to Las Vegas to dig into his background and motivation.

Commentators discoursed on the meaning of it all. Congress is aflame with demands for gun laws against “bump stocks” that turn semiautomatic AR-15s and AK-47s to fully automatic. Paddock’s deeds pushed Puerto Rico and North Korea out of the headlines. By Wednesday, Trump himself was in Vegas. Five days later, police and FBI are still searching for the “motive.”

Whatever caused Paddock to conclude that ending his life was preferable to living it is not the crucial question. Suicides are not uncommon in America. About 3 of every 4 are carried out by white males; 121 are committed daily, with gunshot a common method.

The real question is what turned Paddock into a psychopath without conscience or a moral code that would scream to him that what he was planning was pure evil.

Unlike ISIS terrorists who believe they are soldiers of Islam doing the will of Allah, and will achieve paradise for slaughtering infidels, Stephen Paddock did not believe anything like this.

He coolly and patiently plotted mass murder almost for sport. He rented a hotel suite with windows overlooking a coming country music concert, his fighting fort. He ferried in, over five days, half his home arsenal of 40-some guns, with the semi-automatic assault rifles modified to fire fully automatic. He installed cameras to alert him to when police were about to break in and kill him. Then he smashed the windows on his 32nd floor suite, and began firing for 12 minutes.

Paddock murdered 59 people he did not know and against whom he had no grievance. How did he come to be a man who treated fellow humans as vermin? And does this say something about our civilization?

In “The Brothers Karamazov,” novelist Fyodor Dostoevsky has his character Ivan say, “If God is dead, all things are permissible.”

What Ivan meant is that if God does not exist, the idea of God’s law, of heaven or hell as reward or punishment, is nonsense. And if it is, there is no man-made law that can deter men who have decided to “end it all.”

Consider. Nevada has a death penalty for the mass murder Paddock was preparing to commit. But as he had already decided to end his life after shooting scores of innocent people, no death penalty or any other threatened state punishment could deter him.

Why not carry out his atrocity and end his life knowing that, within days, all of America would know who Stephen Paddock was?

In Shakespeare, Hamlet declares, “Conscience doth make cowards of us all.” And so, fearing damnation, Hamlet recoils from ending his life or exacting revenge on the king he believes seduced his mother into complicity in the murder of his father.

In Stephen Paddock, the conscience was dead. He was a dead soul, a moral nihilist, a post-Christian man in a post-Christian age, a monster.

Yet, we are going to see more such men, for we no longer have a convincing answer to that oldest of questions, “Why not?”

Nihilist lives matter.

Unfortunately, in much the same way black lives matter. Just all at once instead of over the course of a month or two. What are we averaging in chicago for a monthly murder rate? Dna info has it at near two a day. Takes the brothers in chicago a month to accomplish what paddock did in an evening. Except paddock was courteous enough to die. Most chicago murders are unsolved.

A very thought-provoking article. I am to the woods to consider your observations in reversed order. Considering our discussion for Stucky’s QOTD, I think this good fodder for thought.

In Shakespeare, Hamlet declares, “Conscience doth make cowards of us all.”

In “The Brothers Karamazov,” novelist Fyodor Dostoevsky has his character Ivan say, “If God is dead, all things are permissible.”

“Paddock murdered 59 people he did not know and against whom he had no grievance. How did he come to be a man who treated fellow humans as vermin? And does this say something about our civilization?” – Buchanan

This is a total misdirect that we see often. It is like the oft repeated line that ‘we’ owe the national debt, when in fact, we didn’t spend it on gravy train projects that made the rich richer. Here, Patty puts the blame on the public. The motherfucker was loony. He hated people. He was a psychopath. He was making a living gambling. How is that ‘normal’? Moving from place to place, going anywhere his impulses took him and doing it his way are not the things your father told you were desirable or worthwhile. It makes for a great melody for Frank Sinatra but the words are straight from the Satanic bible, “Do what you will.”

You can bet your sweet ass that every time some motherfucker shoots up a crowd, rams a vehicle into a crowd or bombs a crowd, the fucking talking heads will ask, what’s wrong with us? Fuck you, you fucking bird brain. Conscience makes humans of us all. Hamlet uses the word to mean reflection, thought versus action, he doesn’t mean a sense of guilt. Motherfuckers that shoot people willy-nilly do not have a conscience. Does this make them heroes instead of cowards? Hell no. They are animals with no god.

I’m tired of these old-line hacks like Buchanan and Coulter who like to wag their fucking finger at us anytime somebody who is totally different from us, fucks up. This motherfucker lived on the edge, on the fringe of normal. Yes, he had a girlfriend, yes he had a house, he had money and he had a normal-sounding career history. He was either an accountant, a government employee, a contractor, a pilot..He was an enigma to all around him. And yet, fucking Buchanan tries to pin the tail on us donkeys. Why the fuck doesn’t patty-cakes ask his wife what’s wrong with her? Fuckhead.

Then my quoting of “The Brothers Karamazov,” novelist Fyodor Dostoevsky’s character Ivan’s,

“If God is dead, all things are permissible.”

and Hamlet’s “Conscience makes cowards of us all” are not paradoxical at all.

What would your Dr. Pangloss say.

I didn’t take personal accusation from his comments. I took it as a observation of society’s state and exempted myself from the collective.

What the fuck would I know what Pangloss would say? I merely quote shit he said. I do not speculate as to what he would say because then it wouldn’t be Pangloss, it would be me. Get it?

Besides, the quote is – conscience doth make cowards of us all..

He is hesitant to act, his hesitation is what he calls conscience. He wonders what is there beyond life; if death is not a solution but a continuation of the same dream, then he hesitates to kill himself. That, then is what he calls cowardice. He is in no way saying we all are cowards for having a conscience.

“And does this say something about our civilization?”
—– article

I have rather mixed feelings about this excellent question.

On the one hand, I can easily jump to the conclusion that this society is well fucked, and the end is near, and all hope for a return to decency is gone …. as many of us so stated in yesterday’s QOTD.

On the other hand, I find myself somewhat reluctant to transfer upon 320 million the actions of one fucked up individual. (Yes, I realize such fucked up individuals are increasing in frequency … so, perhaps hopelessness about this society is the result of a cumulative activity of fucked-upness.)

I sleep upon the horns of a dilemma.

As horrific as the Vegas shootings may be, perhaps perspective is in order;

— about 16000 people are murdered in the USA annually

— that’s a rate of about 5 per 100,000

— Honduras has the #1 rate in the world at 91 per 100,000

——- USA doesn’t even crack the Top 25

http://list25.com/25-countries-with-the-highest-murder-rates-in-the-world/5/

Relatively speaking, perhaps things aren’t as bad here as we imagine it?

Society is sick, there can be no question. It is a deep-seeded, pervasive sickness that effects everyone but some more than others. The closer one is to the center/pinnacle of society the sickness is worst, for the John Galts and Harscrabble Farmers of the world it is minor but still present. We are all connected in myriad unseen ways. This society is corrupt, depraved, detached, depressed and ultimately dying and we all feel it to some degree.

This is not new. I’m sure the culture during the fall of some 200 empires that have come and gone throughout history was quite similar at its core.

The difference this time is only in technology/globalization. Never before has their been such inter-connectivity between all the world’s nations and, of course, never before has mankind had the ability to lay waste to the entire surface of the earth with nuclear weapons.

If humanity survives the inexorable turmoil the next two decades will bring, then there will be a re-birth. It has always been so.

I’m not a huge gun guy, but I at least understand the difference between a semi automatic rifle with a bump stock and an actual automatic rifle. They are not the same thing, but this article keeps referring to fully automatic weapons.

The strange thing is the constant rate of fire heard in the various videos sounds like automatic weapons, but they keep telling us it was just a rifle with a bump stock.

The story has more questions than answers at this point, but for Pat B. to heap on more misdirection and confusion is wrong whether it if from his own ignorance or if he is doing it wittingly.

Too many guns shooting to have been one shooter. At least two .30 caliber machine guns and sub-machine guns going at the same time. There is a video of a machine pistol being used on the crowd inside the venue. Witnesses claim to have seen three active shooters.

One trigger action per shot + self loading firearm = semi-automatic.
One trigger action + self loading firearm + the firearm shoots until the trigger is released or the ammo is exhausted = fully automatic.
A slide-fire / “bump fire” stock is a trigger actuation device to allow rapid fire with ONE SHOT per trigger pull.
There are well trained shooters who can manipulate a trigger just as fast without special devices.
A slide-fire stock isn’t magic, it takes practice to run one of them as well.
The gun is never the real issue, it’s the intent of the user.

I’m making a guess that someone wearing a Burka could smuggle as many weapons as they wanted into anywhere they wanted that didn’t employ TSA style security procedures. You wouldn’t even know what sex person was under one of those walking tents.

I’ve seen people going into hotels with a big rack of those suit/dress size luggage things, you could hide a 50 caliber machine gun in one of those without attracting attention since they’re both large enough and common enough to see being taken into hotels.

I don’t see anything at all suspicious about getting that many guns into a hotel room. I could do it and so could you.

There are three sides to every story…. yours…. mine…. and the truth.
When searching for a lost person, one thing never stops…… investigation.
I cannot tell you how many times when law enforcement briefs me on something, it is no where near to the truth of the situation.
Investigate, investigate, investigate… leave no stone upturned.
If Paddock does not fit the profile…. investigate!
If ISIS is claiming responsibility….. investigate!
If a seemingly crazy woman utters “your gonna die”…. investigate!
The evidence always leads you to the truth.
I’ve done this so many times, that more often than not, the story is no where close to what’s being offered as the “truth”

Here.. a quick does of reality eh ???

How do we KNOW that Paddock actually did anything ?
CLAIMS that he was the shooter ?
He was in a room in the hotel ?
Countless weapons found which could have been planted there…
Expert army and weapons specialists saying the weapons in the room weren’t the ones used ?
Multiple windows broken suggesting multiple shooters ?
Concert exits blocked, spotlights turned onto the crowd (for targetting).
Warning in advance – 4chan, woman in queue saying you’re all going to die.
FBI/ISIS sting gone bad ?
The hard reality is that we don’t actually KNOW anything beyond what we’re told and we cant establish the credibility of that.
We CAN drive trucks through most of the holes in the so called facts, as per usual.

Simple example:
Shadow govt does the shoot-up. Frames Paddock. Sticks him in a room with some ammo and guns, takes photos. Says – here ya go proof he did it ! The sheeple believe it.

The reality is that no-one in the mindless herd has any HARD FACTS to prove anything, as data is GIVEN to the herd by the press, FBI etc.
Credibility of that evidence is not independently established.
Circumstantial photos of blown out/shot out hotel windows etc count for nothing in reality.

One can but pick flaws in the data in an attempt to establish the truth, which typically is nothing like the official line, as has been the case throughout human history now hasn’t it.

Extrapolate the event – where does it lead ?
Who benefits (greed rules) ?

What experts have examined those weapons and determined they weren’t the ones used?

And what testing did they do to determine that?

FWIW, there would be gunpowder residue in the rooms matching the residue in the weapons if they were the ones being used, but that would require specialized lab testing of residue samples which is usually only available to police agencies until long after the fact.

The Suicide image of the alleged shooter( from 4chan) is disturbing. The body runs (like a car) on Blood pressure. A shot to the head releases that pressure almost instantaneously. 2 of 8 pints would have been expected on the carpet, and there was only some to the frontal lobe /face. The blood on the front of his brown shirt at the chest is really a giveaway that a bloody hand has gripped the shirt. Also he was placed with a handy pistol near his head but not in or close to his hand. Movie stunt shit imitating life, as you would know if you have witnessed a human head shot and the bleed out.

How do we understand a man like his? Padddock was not a layed off factory worker addicted to opiods, a violent ideologue, or a returning vet with ptsd. His life in many respects was admirable, the very model of the American Dream. He has acquired wealth, not by inheritance, but by his own initiative and labor. He owned a house, and an airplane, and had sufficient funds to indulge his passion for gambling and to acquire material possessions. He was a loner, but his life was not without the pleasure of female companionship and he was not estranged from the only relative we know about, his brother. After the shooting, I met a friend for coffee who, like me, is without great wealth, a job, or a woman, and darkly joked that Paddock did not fit the profile of a serial killer–we did.

Somehow, the usual manner of ascribing motive to psychological and material causes seems insufficient when faced with this apparent enigma. Was the American Dream itself the root of this evil? Perhaps in this case the answers have to come, not through our various pseudosciences, but by the musings of long dead poets and the prophets of old.

I have even had some behind-the-scenes access to hotels in one of my previous jobs and seen how security is handled. When you pull up, the staff get your bags on a cart and wheel them in for you to the lobby, then arrange to deliver them to your suite. Nobody is going to comment on size, shape, amount, or weight and they will not tamper with them. They’re going to respect your privacy and be friendly and helpful and fast.
If you’re a VIP, they become even more friendly and deliver all sorts of extras to your room, such as wine+cheese, fruit, etc.

Presuming that Paddock actually was the sole shooter, he did apparently leave a note (which can be seen in some of the crime scene photos which have been released). A note that has not been released, for some reason. Odd.

If he was the shooter, and things are exactly as have been presented by the media, then there are two likely explanations:

1. Religious. ISIS has claimed he converted to islam, and went full jihadi.
2. Political. There have been reports of AntiFA literature being recovered from his room. Communists wrote the book on terrorism, and mass murder is nothing new to them. There have been rumors of AntiFA terrorist acts planned for October. Maybe this was one of them?

Neither, or both, may be accurate. If either of these are true, will we hear the left start demanding ‘common sense muslim legislation,’ or a ban of their own toxic, anti-American, anti-white, violent hate-politics – or would the Leftist media just stop talking about it, as they have in the past when reality does not support their subversion?

They may be going with the ‘he was just insane’ line of bullshit – like they have in Europe with their imported islamic terrorists – because whatever the truth is, is politically unendurable. We may never know. I did notice that the Clark County Sheriff looked like we wanted to crawl under the podium during his last speech. I presume he was heavily pressured to lie, presumably about either the motive of the shooter, or the actual events themselves, and he looked like did not like it.

I did jury duty once. The defense lawyer had no game other than to put doubt in the jury’s heads. Afterwards, the women were hesitant to overlook his questions. I said, you are letting him get into your head, the witnesses gave incontrovertible testimony that the perp was at the scene and the evidence was found at his residence.

I don’t understand the mentality of people who choose to believe in fairy tales and government bullshit rather than observe and report. It’s not hard to use your noggin; gather the facts, throw out the unsubstantiated bullshit and make a fucking decision. Please. I’m getting tired of all these doubting Thomases who ask if people really got killed or if it was all a dream. You guys make Maggie seeing dead people sound rational.

Are you kidding me, Paddock is a CLEAR patsy! This was a false flag event with several shooters who were stationed all around the event, as multiple police radio chatter clearly exposed. There are SEVERAL videos that are 100% IRREFUTABLE proof that there were multiple shooters and the fact that Paddock rented a room there on the 32nd floor is NOT proof he shot ANYTHING except maybe that he drank OUT OF a shot glass! That poor man is a CLEAR patsy for a much larger and well organized attack on the public as part of the ongoing effort to strike fear into the hearts of the public to pass more gun control laws as well as a myriad of other tasks this event accomplished for the totally SICK and EVIL ‘cabal’ that once again fooled many average Americans just like they did in so many other false flags including 911 among MANY others!

I don’t believe there were other shooters in the hotel, but I’m willing to accept any actual proof if you can find some. IF there were other shooters, say on the 4th or 10th floors, as some claim, it should be easy to prove by testing the suspected rooms for gunpowder residue. One test kit, http://www.meditests.com/exaerfieltes.html, is called Expray. It is a simple spray test that changes color with the presence of explosive chemicals, including expended gunpowder. I don’t believe anyone will make that test and I don’t think any actual evidence will be found. The rumors, on the other hand, will only get bigger and more grandiose.

Gotta stop a tower shooting dick? A spic does the trick.

Once again, like in the UT Austin tower, a Hispanic guard brought the shooting to an end.
Some folks don’t want to credit the cops but I want to say, the sirens and cop swarm tends to have an effect on fuckers. In this case, the shooter became aware of the guard who was checking on an open door. The shooter had no way of knowing what his intentions were but the presence of the security guard panicked him.

I read once about Wyatt Earp confronting a gunman. He commanded the gunman to hand him the gun and the asshole did so. I’m sure Paddock wasn’t thinking of getting into a direct gunfight with the law. He was comfortable shooting at defenseless people but he didn’t care to face the gun-toting popo. Tell me how brave your going to be when a swarm of cops in kevlar point a dozen shotguns at your ass.

I like conspiracy theories, their thrilling. Eventually you get tired of pissing your panties at every twist in a conspiracy theory. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

Wiki says Charles Whitman’s autopsy revealed a walnut-sized brain tumor that ‘may have been pressing against his amygdala.
Plus, was known to be on drugs, had dexedrine on him upon his death.
His diary indicated he had ‘bad feelings’ that he couldn’t explain.
Sometimes drugs or physical maladies play a role, just saying.
