Man Gives the Shoes Off His Feet to Stranger in Need at Kentucky Chick-fil-A

Via MSN

Hallie Cassady’s family eats at Chick-fil-A in Bowling Green, Kentucky at least once a week. But last week’s visit to their favorite restaurant wasn’t like the others. Chowing down with her loved ones, the 13 year old witnessed a gesture of kindness that will alter her perspective forever.

That day Hallie was one of many customers who noticed an old man in need of some help. “His shoes were being held together with duct tape,” the teenager recalled to WBKO.

Another diner noticed the man too, and Hallie says she watched as he looked in him the eye, took off his boots and handed them to him. The good samaritan, who was later identified as Mark Townsend of Scottsville, ate the rest of his meal wearing just his socks, then walked barefoot out into the cold.

Inspired by what she was seeing, Hallie snapped a photo of Townsend’s shoeless feet. Her father, Kyle, shared the photo on Twitter. In no time, the post took off, garnering hundreds of shares and a flood of positive responses.

“There really is still good people in this world if we just look for it. It was just so kind of the man to do it,” Hallie told WBKO.

“As a parent you always want good examples and role models for your kids,” said Kyle. “The irony behind all this is the values and beliefs of the Chick-fil-A corporation, and this act of kindness taking place here in this store in Bowling Green, Kentucky, she got to see something that you don’t see everyday.”

Townsend, it turns out, stopped by the Chick-fil-A after taking his granddaughter to an orthodontist appointment. They considered going through the drive-thru, but in the end they decided to go inside—a decision Townsend feels he was destined to make.

“My granddaughter said, ‘Pa, why did you do that?’ And I said, ‘because God spoke to me, and said to give him my shoes,'” Townsend later recalled to WBKO.

He continued: “God said, I’ll supply your needs, and that’s all that matters. I don’t worry about nothing. I have a roof over my head, shoes on my feet.”

I was walking the streets of midtown Manhattan one time on my way to a work event when I saw a panhandler sitting on the side walk holding a sign that read: “I have lost everything except my faith.” I then saw a middle aged white collar man reading the sign as he hurriedly walked by. He suddenly stop in his tracks; moved slowly toward the panhandler and sat down beside him. With an unmistakable hint of emotion in his voice, he said: “I have lost my faith, but still have a shit ton of things. Maybe if you can help me, I will help you.” I do not know how their conversation played out as I could not bring myself to eavesdrop—in spite of my curiosity. But what I saw stayed with me and I hope each was able to help fill the others void.

Admin, thank you for this post. I just bought a great pair of LL Bean boots for my brother and sent them. He is disabled. This post is all I needed.

I have often been graced by the kindness of others. Today, my friend Jon took my property tax payment to the village hall for me, since the mail service has been unreliable for at least 20 years and when I leave my home it is broken into. I try to provide acts of kindness to those in need, however, as a result of the breakins despite an alarm system, my ability to help others has been drastically diminished and limited to online activity for the most part.

This may come as a surprise but I know MANY black people here in KY that would have given their shoes to a down and out white dude because they are decent human beings. There are a lot of good people in KY.

Very uplifting. Thanks for posting. You’ll be pleased to note that Ole Remus over at the Woodpile Report gave you a shout out in Tuesday’s edition. Referred to you as one of the indispensables.

And the “vile”, “haters” at Chic-fil-A even opened up their restaurant on Sunday (something they NEVER do), to hand out free food to passengers stuck at Atlanta’s Hartsfield International airport last Sunday when a fire shut down the entire airport and stranded tens of thousands. No doubt plenty of gays taking free food from them.
