Throughout 1890, the U.S. government worried about the increasing influence at Pine Ridge of the Ghost Dance spiritual movement, which taught that Indians had been defeated and confined to reservations because they had angered the gods by abandoning their traditional customs. Many Sioux believed that if they practiced the Ghost Dance and rejected the ways of the white man, the gods would create the world anew and destroy all non-believers, including non-Indians. On December 15, 1890, reservation police tried to arrest Sitting Bull, the famous Sioux chief, who they mistakenly believed was a Ghost Dancer, and killed him in the process, increasing the tensions at Pine Ridge.
On December 29, the U.S. Army’s 7th cavalry surrounded a band of Ghost Dancers under the Sioux Chief Big Foot near Wounded Knee Creek and demanded they surrender their weapons. As that was happening, a fight broke out between an Indian and a U.S. soldier and a shot was fired, although it’s unclear from which side. A brutal massacre followed, in which it’s estimated almost 150 Indians were killed (some historians put this number at twice as high), nearly half of them women and children. The cavalry lost 25 men.
The conflict at Wounded Knee was originally referred to as a battle, but in reality it was a tragic and avoidable massacre. Surrounded by heavily armed troops, it’s unlikely that Big Foot’s band would have intentionally started a fight. Some historians speculate that the soldiers of the 7th Cavalry were deliberately taking revenge for the regiment’s defeat at Little Bighorn in 1876. Whatever the motives, the massacre ended the Ghost Dance movement and was the last major confrontation in America’s deadly war against the Plains Indians.
Conflict came to Wounded Knee again in February 1973 when it was the site of a 71-day occupation by the activist group AIM (American Indian Movement) and its supporters, who were protesting the U.S. government’s mistreatment of Native Americans. During the standoff, two Indians were killed, one federal marshal was seriously wounded and numerous people were arrested.

When the Pilgrims arrived there were 10 million Indians. In 1900 there were 300,000. Nine million died from white man disease. The remainder, plus any Indian births over the next 400 years, were killed by whites – so a good guess would be 1 million Indians killed or starved by the white man.
Every attempt to make peace failed. There is no point sugar-coating the facts. It is what it is, but saying the natives were savage somehow excuses the fact that whites viewed them as sub-human, put bounties on them, etc., is disgraceful. Many whites of that time knew it was wrong – it was not just how it was. It was known to be wrong then, but they intentionally chose evil as it benefitted them personally.

From what I can tell from reading history, the natives were generally respected. It’s just that they occupied lands that were coveted by immigrants for various reasons. It is also true that the lifestyle of the natives was incompatible with that of the Europeans.
Despite possessing technology not much better than black Africans, natives were never enslaved but were rather regarded as the intellectual equal of whites. In the 19th century, it was believed that if native children were forceably removed from their parents and raised in the European tradition, that they would assimilate into white society. In fact, where I grew up in Oregon, there was a boarding school that was established in the 1850’s that served that purpose explicitly. It was called the Chemawa Indian School and it still exists (it’s student population today come from Alaskan tribes).

Here in Wisconsin, it was in 1832, August 1 & 2, chased west to the Mississippi River for the last 10 or 12 days, the massacre of the Fox & Sauk people. Maybe 150 killed, likely mostly women & children, many or most shot while in the water, from the deck of a boat. It was said the water turned red for quite a ways downstream. Maybe 5 soldiers were killed. There are markers on roads from near Madison winding west to the Mississippi commemorating the chase and finally the massacre. Evidently Wisconsin and some surrounding areas were then deemed “safe” for “civilization” afterwards.
Oh, the site of the massacre was named Victory, Wisconsin, on account of this fine victory over the natives.
