The poem below was suggested by my father for use in a valedictory address in 1967. The important point is my father left school at about grade 8 to work on the farm yet he could quote from great poets such as Longfellow. This was a one room school house that I attended until grade 5 when my father was a local trustee and where students were taught at an early age to recite poems from well known authors. Ceding control of education to the state has been an unmitigated disaster on so many levels and one of the primary causes of our decline as a nation and a people. The public school system must be complete smashed if we are ever to restore our civilization.
In the world’s broad field of battle,
In the bivouac of Life,
Be not like dumb, driven cattle!
Be a hero in the strife!
Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time;

My wife attended a 2 room schoolhouse with 8 grades. She then attended a unified school district high school where she wasted her time getting old enough to go to college. Public schools went the wrong during the 1950’s.
Having five grades in the same classroom was a wonderful experience because children could learn at different rates. After grade 5, I was bused to regional schools and the quality of education went down. But we still had standard tests back in the 1960s which separated the boys from the men. I still have those tests and they are much more difficult than the normal fluff offered by public schools today.
