I think Thomas Merton was as insane as some people we all consider to be devils incarnate.
His rantings, especially in his later years, make one think he was tilting at windmills, living in his own little threatening world between his ears. I have had difficulty reading and understand the thing Merton wrote, with this book being the least understandable. Why the Catholic Church continues to applaud him as a “saint” and a “wonder” is beyond me. Surely people such as Mother Therese, for all her contributions to the good of humanity, is a better example of G_d’s kindness and mercy than anything Merton has writen or said.
