There is a lot wrong with this. However, it is illegal to bring alcohol to most NJ beaches.
First, the cops should have told her what law was being violated. Second, they should have established who owned the alcohol. Third they should have given the Aunt the ticket. Fourth, they had no reason to assume the girl had been drinking.
The girl should have given her name and asked these morons why she was being detained, refused the breathalyzer, and stopped talking to the pricks.
If the cops had any class – they would have given the Aunt a warning, and told her to remove the alcohol from the beach.
The way to stop it is to run the taxes up so high that people revolt and put a stop to it. A massive increase in life insurance policy payouts would drive taxes up…

How hard would it be to get some early twenties guy into a PD and then create one of these kinds of grifter episodes and then go through the settlement process and split the proceeds? I just can’t seem to remember how we wound up here. I remember being pulled over by the cops in the NJ Pine Barrens with my friends. We were underage with beers and weed- although we weren’t stupid enough to be partying while we were driving- and he asked us if anyone was a baseball player. We all nodded and then he said “Well you better show me and throw that stuff as far as you can.” he said if he ever pulled us over again for so much as a loud muffler we’d go straight to jail. That kind of treatment gave me respect for authority and it probably saved us all from having criminal records over nothing much. There are just so many better ways to handle people than to grind their face in the ground and twist their arms behind their back over being naughty that it seems impossible to believe they wouldn’t have another tactic that got the desired outcome for everyone.

This problem is deep on both sides without much of a solution on the horizon. I’ve seen both sides. You would be amazed at how many people are stoned, high or drunk at work, in school or in the supermarket. Nasty, spoiled, arrogant or entitled dirtbags give the cops more of a hard time than you can imagine. After a while it gets under their skin and they become edgy. The chip on their shoulder gets bigger and bigger. At the same time, those cops have been trained that it’s them against us – we: the good and the bad, are lumped into the same entity. The days of Andy Griffith or Adam 12 are over. Everyone is now a perp that hasn’t necessarily been caught yet. Everyone is guilty of something. We pay police so that every citizen goes home safely every night. How did that get turned around? Nobody ever questions the legitimacy of politically appointed police forces instead of the constitutionally elected sheriff. I’m not saying that there won’t be corrupt sheriffs, but I am saying it’s a move back in the direction we came from rather than continuing forward on a path that is not in our (citizens) best interests.
