During the Six-Day War, Israeli aircraft and torpedo boats attack the USS Liberty in international waters off Egypt’s Gaza Strip. The intelligence ship, well-marked as an American vessel and only lightly armed, was attacked first by Israeli aircraft that fired napalm and rockets at the ship. The Liberty attempted to radio for assistance, but the Israeli aircraft blocked the transmissions.

Eventually, the ship was able to make contact with the U.S. carrier Saratoga, and 12 fighter jets and four tanker planes were dispatched to defend the Liberty. When word of their deployment reached Washington, however, Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara ordered them recalled to the carrier, and they never reached the Liberty. The reason for the recall remains unclear.
Back in the Mediterranean, the initial air raid against the Liberty was over. Nine of the 294 crewmembers were dead and 60 were wounded. Suddenly, the ship was attacked by Israeli torpedo boats, which launched torpedoes and fired artillery at the ship. Under the command of its wounded captain, William L. McGonagle, the Liberty managed to avert four torpedoes, but one struck the ship at the waterline.
Heavily damaged, the ship launched three lifeboats, but these were also attacked–a violation of international law. Failing to sink the Liberty, which displaced 10,000 tons, the Israelis finally desisted. In all, 34 Americans were killed and 171 were wounded in the two-hour attack. In the attack’s aftermath, the Liberty managed to limp to a safe port.
Israel later apologized for the attack and offered $6.9 million in compensation, claiming that it had mistaken the Liberty for an Egyptian ship. However, Liberty survivors, and some former U.S. officials, believe that the attack was deliberate, staged to conceal Israel’s pending seizure of Syria’s Golan Heights, which occurred the next day. The ship’s listening devices would likely have overheard Israeli military communications planning this controversial operation. Captain McGonagle was later awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroic command of the Liberty during and after the attack.

USS LibertyThe Department of Defense Law of War Program (DoD Directive 2311.01E – formerly DoD Directive 5100.77) provides that “All reportable incidents committed by or against U.S. personnel, enemy persons, or any other individual are reported promptly, investigated thoroughly, and, where appropriate, remedied by corrective action.”
On June 8, 2005 the USS Liberty Veterans Association submitted A Report of War Crimes Committed Against the USS Liberty, June 8, 1967 to the Department of Defense in accordance with the DoD Law of War Program.
The War Crimes Report we filed lists allegations of acts committed during the attack on our ship, including:
The jamming of our radios on both US Navy tactical and international maritime distress frequencies;
The use of unmarked aircraft by the forces attacking the USS Liberty;
The deliberate machine gunning of life rafts we had dropped over the side in anticipation of abandoning ship; and
The recall of two flights of rescue aircraft that had een launched from Sixth Fleet aircraft carriers. After those flights were recalled, Sixth Fleet personnel listened to our calls for help as the attack continued knowing they were forbidden to come to our assistance.
The Department of Defense has unilaterally waived its obligation under the Department of Defense Law of War Program by refusing to investigate the allegations contained in the War Crimes Report. The Department of Defense has also refused to provide a speaker to address the crew of the USS Liberty and explain their actions with regard to the War Crimes Report.

So USS Liberty original Benghazi? We, of course, don’t know the actual motivations of the various parties (unlike Benghazi). Israel must have been highly motivated to attack the USS Liberty over several hours. By rights that is a declaration of war on the USA. We should have responded with a cratering of their primary air base runways. Wiped out a couple of tank depots etc. We can have disagreements but we don’t kill our allies with impunity.
The fact that the Israelis launched this attack and our actions to stand down indicate a lot more was going on.

This kind of stuff does not happen in a vacuum.
Eg. Benghazi was an arms shipment operation to ISIS in Syria/Iraq by the Obama/Clinton team. Once the Islamists took the opportunity to take the weapons and kill Amb Chris Stevens it was easier to do nothing and hope the whole thing would go away.
I suspect something similar was going on with the USS Liberty either directly or nearby and the Liberty was targeted to dissuade the US. Thus we stood down and did nothing instead of escalating and exposing whatever we were doing in the area.
Doesn’t excuse the attack and resulting injuries and death by Israel, its a failure of imagination to resort to lethal action with “allies”. Much as I would like to annex Mexico and be done with it.
Nothing is perfect in war and mistakes happen. You can hate the Israelis if you want but that won’t accomplish anything but raising your blood pressure. I think it would be more helpful to focus on the stuff we have some limited control over, the US government.
It’s not the first time Israel has attacked us. Look up the Lavon Affair. This and the USS Liberty assault are simply two examples of which that are proven and beyond dispute. Others that are probable include 9/11 and the murder of President Kennedy.

Perhaps the attack was a simple diversion, or more likely Israel feared the U.S. intelligence being gathered by the Liberty would be leaked before the next days attack on the Golan Heights.
